Telepathy and Earth-that-was
Monday, November 13, 2006

I've been messing around (mostly inside my own mind) with the idea of a human exodus from earth-that-was, and have figured why it is that River is telepathic...i think. Whenever a population looses a vast amount of its genepool (say, when a boatload of peoples arrive on a new island and create a new civilisation), its called a population bottleneck. Its the same thing with the amish people, as they rarely have children with people outside of the amish community, meaning a smaller gene pool. This means that minor genetic fluctuations from person to person are becoming amplified. This is just science; the way that certain genetic conditions are of higher prevelance in isolated communities.

If telepathy, or telepathic traits were-at some level-genetic (as opposed to chemical or enviromental), and assuming that not the entire population of earth-that-was travelled to the system for whatever reason, then its is possible that a population bottleneck has occoured, increasing the genetic likelihood of telepathy.

That may lead on to a story i write in the future, regarding the denial that some (many) were left behind on earth-that-was, which may explain why Earth is discussed in almost mythical terms, and why so little remnants of the past exist

A population bottleneck could also be the reason why all the characters are so attractive! hehe

Undoubtedly the neural stripping in some ways amplified her powers, while at the same time it fragmented her 'reality matrix'. Im just spitballing, got nothing to back this up, but im suggesting that if telepathy is genetic then more peeps than just River would have it. Maybe we all have it, but because our reality is organised and structured that when a new thought pops into our mind, and we can't find its source we discard it. RIver has lost that capacity, meaning she sees not only her own mind, but the content of other peoples as well.

Also, each ship's population would have likely been isolated form the others. So there could have been a few different traits floating around the gene-pool when they arrived in the 'verse.

Or....a combination of all the above.

Population bottleneck created propensity for telepathy...eugenics program started to amplify/expand that...River's talent further amplified because of neural stripping.

I thought she was telepathic because of the 'nueral stripping'. That was the whole point of doing brain surgery and the like, even if it did 'fragment her own reality matrix'.

Course there was a bottleneck, mutt! Ya really think they shoved 6 or so billion people into those ships we see at the start of the BDM? Psssh...nah...those were the wheatie bits and the chaff got left behind. To me, one long eugenics program has been going on in the background of the Serenifly 'verse and River was just a result - a damn fine result, if you ask me - creating a new breed of human;)
