“Tis the Season o’ Melancholy; Fa-La-La-La-La, Blah-Blah-Blah-Blah.” I
Tuesday, December 12, 2006

More than one Browncoat has expressed a doldrummy feeling this year. This is not a cup of Christmas cheer
, but it may provide just enough placebo to make do.

Ghosts of Christmas past.

For most folk in these here United States and many of those European influence, the “True Meaning of Christmas” lies somewhere between

and

The celebrations fall between

and

Somewhere in the middle of all that, the traditions and the trash, we find ourselves caught up, in a Tsunami of garland and carols and ribbon and the slaughter of innocent evergreens, whether or not there’s even room in our belief system for such a holiday. Among the flotsam and jetsam left behind are those that have known joy in the past and long for it again. And there are those who have never known happiness at all.

Having spent a few Christmases alone—and Thanksgivings, too—I know a little about looking at a vacant home or apartment and wondering what to do with myself on these “special occasions” I had no one to share with. How I got into those circumstances is a tale for another day and irrelevant here. The point is that I could have stewed about my fortunes and isolation. Or I could go out and acknowledge if not celebrate the magic of Christmas. Instead of observing the Holiday, perhaps I could observe the participants. I ate my holiday dinners at restaurants, sometimes alone watching (and yes, envying; I am human…) families eating theirs, sometimes—once actually—sharing a meal with local celebrity, “Shakey Jake”

who sold me a few of his postcards which I still have somewhere. It was dreary and gray inside my heart, make no mistake. I had an emptiness inside, a hollowness. As if I were immaterial as a ghost in my own machine. It was a haunted feeling even as I was the one doing the haunting. For it was not always so.

Wow...that's some mighty powerful imagery you got there, JQ. Definitely opens one's mind to how others might celebrate the holidays...
