Black and White and Red All Over
Sunday, March 4, 2007

Well, nobody has tried to rip off my latest creation yet. I think I've actually out-weirded any attempt to match the workings of my psyche. Incidentally, this is me writing without the aid of caffeine.

Now, the dilemma is whether to stick to a tight small arc or whether to really let rip. The direction this is going in could be limitless, but possibly more amusing for the writer than the reader. Maybe I should use the discipline of the seven chapter layout a la 'Zen', rather than do a 'Cold Comfort' and have a sagging middle plot. Especially since I have another plot-line or two stacking up behind.

Of course, this doesn't then preclude the use of said weirdness in a later plot-line. I've come to the conclusion that I am better off following my own goofy star here - I'll leave other folks to the undiluted angst, horror and teenage dilemma. I'm going for something a bit more subtle. ('Cos Jaynefic is well subtle *coughyeahrightcough*) I mean, I can write torture or angst, but I prefer to weave them into a larger picture. And as some readers may know, I can write steamy scenes, but undiluted porn linked with thin characterization is just bad writing to me. So, anyone who does bother reading my stuff will find a nice mixture of humour, action, romance and danger.

Of course, I may be moving in a couple of weeks. Which will necessitate being off-line for a while. It may be that I might not return. So I better get my shit together and finish this latest piece. It's not quite the cliff-hanger of some of my other offerings, but it's still a mighty fine dilemma I've left our boy in.

Been reading a few threads about the how and why of fic writing, OC's and Mary-Sues, canon pairing and pet peeves. I've come to the conclusion that the reason my stuff is not rapturously received is because I don't toe the party line on 'accepted' Jayne pairings. Well, tough shit, guys. I happen to think that a lot of the stuff I have read is just thinly disguised MS-fic at best, and sad teen-diary wishfic at worst. (Puts claws away again.) Still, I'll play nice. Just there's no rayne gonna fall here, dig?

I must agree with BEB on the pairing issues. Though I do like Jaylee, what I like more is very good writing. My favourite story (I think) is "Utopia" by Salieri (I think) and that has no real romance, but is just so whacked out fantastic.

I think Whedon likes rules just so he can break them. He sets up his own little universe then, whamo!, turns it on its axis into something different. So I say bravo to having non-canon pairings and very good OCs. And like you, I cannot abide angsty-teenage romance crap nor MS. I am, however, a glutton for well-written angst (and if it's got some Jaylee, well...)

I keep telling you this because it's true: I love your stuff. So keep writing it, keep Larji with Jayne and for God's sake, keep writing and posting here!

BLUEEYEDBRIGADIER

I dig...and I applaud, SpaceAnJL. You have every freedom to write out what you think is a brilliant story involving the BDHs, and Jayne in particular. While I am one those people who thinks Rayne is a good thing, I have always admired how you've crafted a detailed and superbly nuanced storyverse where Jayne is with someone who's closer to his own age (sayonara to Rayne and Jaylee) and who can appreciate Jayne for Jayne without altering part of who he is.

Personally, I sincerely hope you come back after any move you gotta make and continue to be a leading voice in the fight against "acceptable" pairings. Cuz last time I checked...we play in the holy sandbox of Whedon. And Lord knows he ain't big on following the rules;D
