On Writing
Wednesday, April 18, 2007

I want to thank all the people that commented on my latest fic. I'm the first to admit that it wasn't perfect and needs much more work.

Mal and Inara together are very hard to write. It seems that if you get one character the other suffers and vice versa. Add to that my relative inexperience at writing for an audience and the required snark and it's darn near impossible.

I admit my first reaction was just to quit and not write any more. Fortunately, that emotion lasted about 5 seconds.

My second reaction was to start a new story without the pesky twosome. No, not a good idea.

I eventually decided that I will take the original fic and see if I can't improve it. And use your suggestions and comments as a guild

It may be a while before you see a new better version but it will be there eventually.

Well...much as it might not have worked, ncbrowncoat, you definitely have more cojones than I from merely posting what you had written. I cannot say the same:(

It's really difficult to write for all 9 characters. I hate doing it. Mal and Inara, and their relationship dynamic, are especially difficult to write. Take your time, write multiple drafts until you're happy with it, and then post. Having a beta reader helps with a lot of things too.
