Underground - my upcoming fic
Monday, May 28, 2007

Hey there –

I have never really been one for blogging, not really sure why. But I wanted to talk a bit about my new fic, and it occurred to me there’s this thing called a blog, where I can ramble to my hearts content and people can read or not, as they choose. Who’d a thunk it. Perhaps I should give it a try???

I am going to start posting “Underground” shortly. My husband is just giving it a final going over looking for typo’s.

Of course it all belongs to Joss and Fox (read as disclaimer), I just enjoy telling more stories about them.

I started writing ‘Underground’ two days after my grandmother fell and broke her hip in January. First because I needed something creative to do while I was sitting with her in the hospital day in and day out. But more importantly I needed a story where a woman, overcomes insurmountable odds to survive, with the help of our favorite big dam hero’s. I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated going to sleep at night thinking of how Mal and Kaylee and Co. are going to weasel their way out of the mess they are in, rather than becoming depressed about my grandma.

Throughout the process, I have learned so much about writing. First and foremost that I really enjoy it. Mal4prez has been betaing for me. She has been wonderful, and has taught me so much. Not only about which typo’s I missed, but also given me new insights into how to structure dialogue and stay in a single point of view. She pointed out lots of things about the characters which helped me to make them much deeper more complex individuals. And she pointed out lots of little details and questions about the plot, which in my mind were answered, but did not show up actually written down in the story. She has also been really patient, constantly reminding me when my characters stop talking western and start talking all fancy. I really can’t thank her enough.

So a bit about the story:

It will be posted in 9 chunks, prologue, chap 1-7 and an epilogue.

It’s set during the series, after Trash and before Heart of Gold. Far enough along that the crew has inkling about what’s going on in River’s brain, but before Inara decides she might want to leave.

There are a handful of new characters. Otherwise the pairings are all cannon. Z/W; S/K and M/I, Although Inara is not around much in this fic. If I had to pick one character to say it focused on it would be Mal, but it’s not just his story.

We will learn a touch about the pre-series lives of our BDH’s over the course of the fic. We also learn a lot about what greed can do to a person, and even more about generosity

Anyway - I hope you like reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it. – Desert Girl
