Wake Up and Smell the Blue Sun Coffee

Of course, it's probably decaffeinated and fat-free and all the other stuff that makes it booooring...

I've been in Cornwall for a week. Lovely weather, rather too many Cornish cream teas and some lovely walking on the cliffs at Tintagel. A word of advice, though; don't eat a huge meal of shellfish and then read H P Lovecraft before going to bed. The indigestion-fuelled dreams were...interesting.

Came back and found that the Cat has been fighting and has a very manky ear. If he wasn't 'done', I would seriously consider renaming him after Our Favourite Mercenary - all he does is feast and fight. (The third 'f' being denied him...) He's getting old, now, but hasn't quite realized that he no longer has the speed and power that he once had.

So, I'm back at my desk, nicely refreshed and with a headful of extremely odd scenes that I have to organise. But. I have been accused, in the nicest possible way, of Mary-Suedom, and have consequently lost my nerve a bit. I didn't think it was that bad. I could go back and delete everything after chapter 9 of the first fic, of course. But I am extremely proud of 'Zen and the Art...' Granted, parts of 'Cold Comfort Mountain' were a little flabby, but that was down to writing through a block, and I did warn folks that that was a Cobbcentric piece. Er...as was 'Viva New Vegas'. Guess I'm on a loser here.

Hell with it. It's canon, post-BDM, closely referenced from official sources. I've introduced one OC for a very specific reason (and not the obvious self-indulgent one.) If folks can't see past the OC, and just want a round of bunk-hopping with the crew, just keep walking. After all, this is the Jossverse. We could have started an episode with a 'long-lost sibling' who was really a space-entity.

STINKINGROSE

If you define Mary Sue as being somebody who comes in and seduces a main character I'd say we're most of us pretty guilty of that. Heck, Kaylee pretty much qualifies doesn't she?

If you define MS to be a one dimensional f*ck toy, I think many of us escape that label for our OC characters.

You know my feelings about your work. Your writing style is awesome and you make your readers think while reading. I've found so many bits of foreshadowing in early chapters that I'm on the look out now all the time for seeming incongruences that will later pan out. Don't worry about MS as long as you have a well-developed character. You know full well that character is key. And I wouldn't call her a MS anyway. She's hardly perfect and usually never saves the day.

Been waiting a while for more. Guess I can wait some more.

SCHOONER

Yanno, I don't necessarily believe "Mary Sue" = bad. Some of the most enduring literary characters (e.g. James Bond) were admitted to be Mary Sues. Whether I enjoy it depends on a lot more: dialogue, plot, wit, etc. Don't let accusations of Sue-dom get to you. Your stuff is good, so keep it up.
