RNRZ - two deleted scenes...

(a lot of pruning left one scene cut completely and another re-edited. I like 'em. Here they are...)

scene one: Leather Men in space...

CUT TO Slow pan down FX shot of starfield – Ext Space.
The oncoming shape of a spaceship; narrow, fast, souped-up and just plain mean looking. We close in on the flight deck – tinted black windows – the camera moves throught hem and into:

Int. LEATHER MEN ship. Unusual for the ‘verse – it is a zero gravity environment. We see: F/X shot: pieces of hamburger – coins – a cd, whatever, floating about. The Leather Men are strapped into flight couches. LEATHER MAN 2 noisily slurping a milk shake.
LEATHER MAN 1 is gazing up at a monitor.

LEATHER MAN 1:

He’s dead?

BLUE SUN MAN: (off screen)
Apparently. An accident, climbing into a shuttle of some sort. The images came by security inter-wave. I haven’t seen them myself yet. Quite, um, foolish of him. (trying not to laugh)

LEATHER MAN1:
(to himself) You believe that? We only just – maybe after, I guess – we musta rattled ‘em… Dead. Well now –
(to monitor)
Dead – You believe that?

Cut to Int BLUE SUN Building. The same office seen earlier. The BLUE SUN spokesperson – gazing calmly into a laptop.

BLUE SUN MAN:

Belief is something I had removed – call it a contractual obligation… but the Father believes… - and yourselves?

The camera moves in to show the lap-top visual of the LEATHER MAN.

LEATHER MAN1:
Our main concern, right now – is payback – flesh n coin, Sir, twirls the wide verse around. So we do not consider matters settled.
‘Course, only so much we can do openly – without Mr Tam…

Cut to close on

BLUE SUN MAN:
Yes, I understand. I’m turning the matter over to our collections department directly.

Cut back to visual of –

LEATHER MAN1:
Ha! We too. Someone Tam won’t link to us –
And I’m thinking our man’ll get there first.

BLUE SUN MAN: (Out of shot)
Really?

Cut to Int Ship. LEATHER MAN1 grins at his partner – sharing a joke.

LEATHER MAN1:
Yep. No matter how keen your boys are – our man’ll be Early.

LEATHER MAN2:

Ha ha ha.

LEATHER MAN1 (cutting off monitor)
Suits.

scene two: The Tam's - full version, more REGAN.

REVEAL: Ext Tam Estate. Day. Camera zoom in on entrance – we quick cut inside. To the back of a man, neatly suited. We realise who it is when we see his arms drawn back formally behind him. They are blue-gloved.

BLUE SUN MAN:
I’m very sorry for your… loss.

The camera is close – we see the blue-gloved hand clench.
The camera cuts then to close on REGAN TAM.

REGAN TAM: (sniffs)
Thank you – we’re just – we’re just psyching ourselves up to tell… River. Y’know? How do we… a thing like this…

She looks around almost blindly for a moment. GABRIEL TAM puts his arm about her. We see them in tight two-shot.

BLUE SUN MAN: (out of shot)
And she’s still at the… academy?

REGAN TAM:
Yes, we got a card just yesterday. (Laughs with frayed nerves and lack of sleep.)
She’s… happy. (looking up at GABRIEL)

BLUE SUN MAN: (out of shot)
Well, that’s something at least.

Close up on -

GABRIEL: (looking from BS Man to WIFE and back)
Yes – it was the one good thing Simon did – urging us to send her.

Pull back to two-shot of the couple.

REGAN:
He always had her best interests at heart…

The camera cuts jerkily – we see in med shot, off-angle, the BLUE SUN MAN.

BLUE SUN MAN:
Yes, I remember when he came to me for the details…

Cut to group shot – we see all three, homely details of the room etc.

GABRIEL:
Ironic isn’t it – River didn’t want to go - studying was… beneath her, frankly.
But we thought…

Slow zoom in on the couple.

REGAN:
It would be healthy – for them, the two of them… Healthy. Dear God.

GABRIEL:
We had no idea Simon was – and he clearly didn’t realise…

The camera is now BLUE SUN MAN’s P.O.V.

BLUE SUN MAN: (out of shot)
Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

GABRIEL: (looking at us direct)
He became – unhinged. Well, you know of course.

REGAN: (Abruptly – and entering the frame)
I ‘m not going to tell River. I – I – (stifles a sob) Will you… excuse me please.

Exits slowly. The camera watches neutrally for a beat – then pivots back to -

BLUE SUN MAN:
Actually I’m glad she’s gone. I have some information for you Gabriel.
I’m not sure the little woman is in any shape to handle it. She’s not as… strong as you.

Pull back to medium shot of the men.

GABRIEL: (Vaguely)
What? Yes – I used to think she… and River’s strong. But Simon… well…
And she (meaning WIFE) and Simon are… the same. It’s disappointing.
- What information?

Quick cut – tight close up on the blandly evil features of

BLUE SUN MAN:
Your son is… not dead. The security tape of the accident was… tampered with. The execution was – well, the technical skill was superb but the –

Quick cut - tight close up. GABRIEL. Haggard now.

GABRIEL:
WAIT. Not dead? He – it – the death was… a HOAX?!!?

Slow pan back to

BLUE SUN MAN:
I’m afraid so. It would appear to have been a childish attempt to – well, I’m not sure what really – wound you? Are things really so – no, I’m sorry – I didn’t come here to… pry.

Pull back further – diagonal two-shot.
GABRIEL is shaking. He looks ill now.

BLUE SUN MAN:
In any case – falsifying death is a major felony – I can’t prevent the Alliance Federal Officers from pursuing him now. Your son…

GABRIEL: (softly)
Is dead.

Reverse angle.

BLUE SUN MAN:
No, no – weren’t you listening? Is it the shock? Your son –

GABRIEL: (Firmly)
Is DEAD.

Close up on the features of GABRIEL TAM. His eyes are empty.

FREEZE FRAME.
