The Causality of Peace
Friday, October 5, 2007

He went to the war.
He fought. He killed. He was wounded and neglected. He was hated and insulted. He was taught hate. His humanity was beaten out of him.
He saw horrors and nightmares.
Then He came home.
But He didn’t leave the war.
He didn’t love or laugh. He didn’t heal. He didn’t find warmth and solace in my mother’s embrace. He didn’t sleep. He barely ate. The only thing he saw or heard was his ghosts.
Then He left.
He took nothing with him. No clothes. No food. No money. Just a gun.
I didn’t see him again until his funeral.
He waited for the change to die. Ten years after the end of the war. When memories began to fade. After life resumed. He waited for peace to become a causality.
He wasn’t a solider anymore.
He wasn’t a father, a husband, a son, a brother. He wasn’t a hero or a turncoat. He wasn’t a fighter or a hider. He was just a bruised and broken man.
He didn’t look like my father lying there in the coffin. That thin, waxy skinned doll.
He looked like Death.
That’s all he was in the end.
He went to war as a man. They sent him home something else. They thought they sent the man back but it never returned. The man stayed and only Death returned.
He chose his end alone and neglected. Like the war left him.
But he did so quietly, with out the fan fare of war.
He left his life behind, so war didn’t touch it. So he left me all he had.
He left me his gun and his story.
So now I carry Death.

I've talked to many war vets and this stuff you write ain't fiction. Hits too close to home on some parts. Truly nobody wins in a fight.
