So I finally got around to seeing The Village...
Wednesday, August 18, 2004

I guess it was okay. The only problem with going to see a M. Night Shyamalan movie is that you're expecting the big twist so you spend the whole hour and a half waiting for it to happen. Or you just start to over analyze everything, like my friend did for the first half of the movie.

But I have to admit I was actually freaked out. There were points where I was like "Okay, it's coming towards me, it's broad daylight, so why am I cringing?" When I first saw The Sixth Sense the only time I jumped was when a cop lit a flare towards the end of the movie. I kid you not. It caught me off guard more than the kid with the back of his head blown off. I don't know what made The Village so different. With the way the shots are set up, you know something is suddenly going to appear, you just don't know what. I also made the mistake of letting my friend hold the popcorn during some of those scenes; I'm not sure how much popcorn ended up on the floor before I took the bag back.

Oh, and regarding "the twist":

Or rather, "twists", since there were two. I sorta suspected the first one where we find out the creatures are made up by the elders so people don't want to leave the village. There was definitely a whole "they're all hiding something" vibe. Which leads into the next twist which I totally didn't see. When Walker opened that chest and pulled out that photo, the first thought to pop into my head was "They're from the future?" Then I actually listened to what the characters were saying and I finally got it. Not a colony in the 1800s but just a village set in a modern wildlife preserve.

Apparently my friend guessed the twist during the movie. I figured something didn't feel right when one of the elders started talking about her dead sister. So if her sister wasn't killed in the village then it must have happened before she came to the colony, right?. If that's the case, how come this woman doesn't have an accent? I watched Colonial House , I know how things work. Plus there was the matter of M. Night Shyamalan's cameo. How was he going to work himself in?

Anyway... I really liked the character of Ivy. A strong female charater. No wonder I liked her She's damn resourceful for a blind lady. Joaquin Phoenix's character was useless and boy did William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver have nothing to do.

I figure The Village was worth the $10.95 I paid. When I got home afterwards I had to go downstairs and turn my computer off. Turned on all of the lights just to do that. Now if that isn't the sign of a decent horror film then I don't know what is.

QUICKSAND

I'm REALLY glad to see there are other people who enjoyed this movie... I saw a sneak of it on the day before it opened, and a packed theater applauded at the end. Then I saw it again the next night... not so much. Different theater, but still packed... there were 6 people in my group, 3 of us hated it, 3 of us (including me) gave it a thumbs up.

If you like M. Night, I can definitely recommend "Wide Awake," the film he did before "The Sixth Sense." I avoided this film like the plague for years, because the previews had all featured Rosie O'Donnell like she was the freakin' star of the movie. In fact, she's in the thing for about 5 minutes and has maybe 10-15 lines. Very much a supporting player to the kids, who are the real stars... great, great film. I'd actually rank it Night's 3rd best after "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs."

XOXO
