Heston and Si/Fi
Saturday, April 12, 2008

Greetings fellow browncoat brothers and sisters
I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to post this, thought about it a while then decided I would so here goes. One of my favorite actors died this past week and it really brought into focus our short time on this lonely little world. Charlton Heston passed on at 84 and he was one of the first actors I recall recognizing in my younger years. Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments were a couple of the first big movies I remember seeing and they were bigger than life. The decisions made by the actor’s character in those movies may have been hard ones but we knew they were the right ones. Funny, those movies were about the small hero fighting against the bigger established ruling foe of the time (that sound familiar?) and even back then that theme was popular.

Having acted in many movies, two of them epic, Heston took folks by surprise when he “lowered” himself by showing a side that enjoyed doing Science Fiction. “Planet of the Apes” is listed in my top four all-time favorite Si/if movie classics. I love that movie and probably have watched it 50 times in the last 3 years or so. The Omega Man and Soylent Green were another two, both excellent!

Anyway, the critics treated Planet of the Apes somewhat harshly but since when do we listen to what they have to say, right? It made a ton of coin and spawn several sequels. So what about Serenity? We need a sequel!! The fans cry out for the verse to continue yet we are ignored. What is wrong with the established media powers? I don’t know, guess I’ll have to stop my media bashing there or I could go on for days. Anyway “PotA” being one of my favorite movies stimulated the creative side of me a short time back and I began a painting with PotA as the theme. The painting is a “work in Progress” (wip) and I’ve shied away from completing it due to lack of interest. Now I may get back to it and finish. Below is the “wip”

All said and done we need to have at least 2 more movies of our BDH. I can’t stand the thought of years into the future looking back and only having one. We are still behind Joss and he knows it. We continue our support of this show and, like the show itself we fight the establishment to get more. We hold the line and that’s that.
