Over a month ago I had posted Chapter 4 of Spinning Out. I was a little burnt out at that point and wanted to take some time with Chapter 5. And I took some time. Way too much. I had forgotten how nice it was to recieve those encouraging comments from people. So I had close to 4,000 words written on a Chapter that was just sitting there. For some reason I couldn't just pick it back up.

Then about ten days ago I got a private message from a reader named reaper2s . Reaper2s is a fellow browncoat who is deployed to Iraq. He sent me a one line email telling me that he was hooked on my story. Yesterday I had a day off and took it to write about 5,000 words. Most of which were kept. If he could take the time to write to me then I have absolutely no excuse not to finish this story. Not just this story but the trilogy.

Now to the story. This is the chapter that involved Dedrick Collins. The big idea with Dedrick Collins and his pack is they speak using Cockney Rhyming Slang. This was developed by Cockney criminals so that they could talk out in the open about things and the police or snitches wouldn't be able to keep up with the meanings. It works like this.

If you want to code a word find something it rhymes with. Much of the common cockney rhymes have some kind of cultural signfigance. So we'll use an example from the story. Belly . Belly rhymes with Derby Kelly . Who? Well I don't know. And it seems nobody is really sure. Some people have said that Derby Kelly was a drummer in the Napoleonic wars because the song that made the rhyme famous came from that period of time. The song is called "Boiled Beef & Carrots". But I digress. We have our word and our code for the word. Belly = Derby Kelly. But to really cocknify it you drop the rhyming word. Thus Belly = Derby (also pronounced Darby). Let's do some one's that we'd be familiar with:

Let's get some Brineys! = Let's get some beers.
Beers=Briney Spears, therefore, Beers=Britneys

My Kareem is broke. = My car is broke.
Car=Kareem Abdul Jabbar, therefore, Car=Kareem

Mmmm. Is that hot Winona? = Mmmm. Is that hot Cider?
Cider=Winona Rider, therefore, Cider=Winona

I like that last one. Winona is in fact very hot like most cleptomaniacs...that's how they get away with it most of their lives.

But you get the idea. You also probably could imagine how difficult it is to input this stuff into a Firefly fic. Although it is humanity and human culture deeply rooted in our past it is also very removed from it. So dropping a Winona reference would probably be stretching it. At one point I just made up a rhyme of my own. So if you read the story please let me know how well I pulled the slang off.

Also in this story we see massive amounts of conflict resolution amongst the crew. Things that have been simmering since the begining of Spinning Out. This is the one where the crew pulls together and really reconciles with each other and their new place in the 'Verse.

Don't read the following if you don't want to be spoiled:

Select to view spoiler:

Inara comes back to Serenity for good. That's right, she is out of the guild. I will discuss and explore later why she made this decision. Although Mal is completely overjoyed at this he is going to have some serious problems dealing with her. You can take the woman out of the guild but it's much harder to take the guild out of the woman. Being a companion was a major part of Inara's identity. One that Mal could never come to grips with. He isn't going to fully appreciate what Inara did. Not the way she wants him to. Friggin men, I swear...Oh wait. I am one.

That's it for now and as always thanks for reading and keep commenting.
