TSCC and my failed fan fic
Thursday, August 14, 2008

Well I bought TSCC on dvd the other day and was completely blew away by it, as I had only watched it on poor quality Internet videos. I know it has another season and it starts soon so I can't wait.

I decided to go back to my fanfic Someone to carry you and I looked out my plan for chapter one liked it alot and proceed to start writing it, I realized quickly there after that I could not write it for the simple reason that I had not watched firefly nor was I entirely sure what I wanted to write. I decided to take a trip into the blue sun room. Big mistake, after I read a few chapters of a fanfic I had been enjoying and then a few of other ones.

I lost all confidence in my fanfic. I mean with so many great fanfics out there how could mine compete? No idea what am going to do now.

oh and just a word about my favorite Girl Summer Glau, I keep saying her name when singing "Holy Mother" how weird is that?

By all means, write! Though I must provide just one word of caution.... once the writing really begins, it tends to never end (being majorly addictive and all), so fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride! :D

Definately write it...take inspiration from those better then you...if you are really worried, get someone to beta it for you! I'm sure it will be awesome...we are our own worst critics!

Plus, no one will ever judge you...those that do, prolly have no right to and therefore, their opinions don't matter!

In my experience, (which I admit is limited) there's three steps to learning how to write decently:

1. Write
2. Be open to and thoughtful about but not despairing over feedback
3. Write more

You got step one, now don't be letting step two be your stopping point! (Cause your own doubts are a kind of feedback, right?) Blow right on by that Adam, and don't worry if your fic isn't perfect. If everyone wrote brilliantly at their first go, a lot less people would be stuck in boring day jobs!

Give it a go. That's my advice. No matter what great tales there are in the BSR (and there are some excellent ones) there is always room for more. Perhaps the way is to write a drabble, or a short fic. And post it. See what happens. We're all good folk around here, wearing our brown coats. Do please show us your story.
