Let Your Big Damn Voice Be Heard
Tuesday, December 2, 2008

As stated previously, I'm interested in the individual and the collective Fandom experience of being a Browncoat, Firefly fan, or whatever you identify yourself as.

On the individual level I'm looking at personal stories of when, how, and why fans became fans of Firefly/Serenity. I'm also interested in the particular activities that differentiate Browncoats from people who just like the show/movie.

Initially I would like you to just tell (write) me your personal (individual, not necessarily intimate) experience of becoming a fan of Firefly/Serenity. I would like you to answer the following questions if you can. These can either be incorporated into your Firefly fan story or answered separately. You can post responses as comments, message me hear, or send them to my email JonathonLundy@boisestate.edu.

When did you first become a fan of the show/movie?

What were the circumstances? (We’re you introduced through another fan or did you just stumble upon it? Did you catch it when it originally aired on Fox or after on DVD, SCI FI Channel, etc…?)

What about the show/film caught your interest and what inspired you to become active in fan activity?

How do you show your fandom and/or participate as a Browncoat? (Message Boards, Chat, Conventions, Viewing parties, Fan Fiction, etc…)

It seem like fan fiction is a popular way to demonstrate Firefly fandom. What is your take on the stories that Browncoats tell and do you participate in Fan fiction?

What kind of impact, in any, has fandom had on your life in general?

On what level does your fandom of Firefly/Serenity affect your identity? Do you consider this something that embodies who are (a Browncoat) or is it more of a casual activity for entertainment purposes?

Is there anything in particular that you identify with in the show or movie? (Characters, Storyline, themes, etc…)

Why do you think this particular show that only lasted one season has gained such a following?

Are you a participatory fan of anything else (other series, movies, genres, sports, etc…) and if so, are those experiences different or similar to being a Browncoat?

In the past, and perhaps the present, society as a whole has questioned the legitimacy of dedicating significant amounts of time to a fictional narrative, especially those in the genre of science fiction.

What are your feelings regarding being a fan and society’s view of you as whole?

Do you ever feel like you have to hide, justify, or defend your fandom to anyone?
