Work Work Work

I’m not lazy, really! I’ve been drawing some, finalizing the Firefly anime/stylized character designs I’ve been working on.

They’re not good enough yet for the Blue Sun Room… “Cherry Blossom” is more of an example of a FINISHED character design image.

But these sketches are going to be the “model” that I use to finish the other eight pictures, and also the style I’m adopting for some Firefly internet manga/graphic novel stuff.

Anyway, I thought maybe people would like to see them. I’m pretty happy with how they all look, though in some cases I had to go more with more of a spirit of the character than an accurate portrayal of their appearance to render them in a style consistent with the others. So if anyone can offer any suggestions how to improve, fire away!

Thanks again. :)

I think maybe I might try to work on Jayne - with a smirk - sometime this weekend. Between the forced-yard-labour and the Oh-flying-turkey-gravy-I-haven't-written-ANYTHING-this-week-these-twelve-hour-days-are-really-starting-to-suck, that is.

For whatever reason I came back to look at this again and only just now realized you'd replied to my comment!

Okay, maybe not a *grinning* Jayne, but his character is so often about comic relief. Maybe a *smirking* Jayne.

Oh, and I do love your Wash, especially front-view. He's so good!

I'm a little surprised to hear that Wash is one of the ones who works. I got his expression pretty good I think, captured the spirit of him, but even though he's cute anime-style, I didn't think anyone would really think it looked like him. Huh. Well, good deal, guess I sold myself short there. :)

Sounds like I need to give more work to Jayne. I always kind of knew he'd be one of the trouble ones, not because he's hard to draw, but because most anime really don't HAVE morally-ambiguous but hero aligned muscular brutes. They have villains, who generally are freakish whether or not they're muscular, and they have villainous or heroic *shudder* BISHOUNEN.

Thank goodness when I draw guys they LOOK like guys. Bishie Mal in a dress would sort of lose something in translation... >_<

Anyway, no trouble. Work on Jayne, check. AnotherSky, I think you're talking about Inara's hairline being low on her forehead? I'll watch her and Simon too.

ANOTHERSKY

So you CAN draw. xD

I'm really seeing it in Mal, Zoe, Wash and Book. Nice. Jayne could be helped out with smaller more angular eyes I think...hope Mr. Baldwin don't get offended none. Nor you. You've done a shiny job.

One thing you have to watch when doing manga style "translations" are trademark characteristics that the style itself tends to cancel out.
For instance jayne's deep set eyes, simon's prominent jawline or inara's low headline...

Keep flyin!

Jayne with a grin, huh? Your ideas are intriguing and I wish to hear more.

Just... Can I not imagine what he might be grinning about? Kind request?

I really like these! Actually, the only one who I think DOESN'T really, really work, strangely enough, is Jayne. I think it's because what you've captured really well in the rest of them is the attitude of the character, and for me this Jayne looks too angry, so he ends up a little too much like a generic anglo anime tough guy to me. I'd maybe try him with a grin instead of a frown.

Really neat! I can't wait to see the finished products.

Um, perhaps I should mention combining the angelfire part and the ok5/bytemite part of that address in the URL.

See, angelfire doesn't allow hotlinking, so that was the only way I could write the address without getting one of those annoying Angelfire Road Block pictures.

Just put a forward slash after the .com, then paste on the ok5/bytemite part.
