Sweet glorious relief!
Thursday, May 21, 2009

For the last 5 weeks, I've had some back pain on the order that any sort of activity performed on the vertical plane, such as sitting or standing, was teeth-gritting, cold sweat inducing hell. The kind that pain killers only WISH they could touch, that radiates down the legs along the sciatic nerve and causes muscle cramps in the thighs and calves.

Ten hours a day in a not ergonomically friendly chair really didn't help matters. If I had to walk, it was either as a limp or a bowed over shuffle depending on how stiff I currently was, and any trip more than 30 feet my legs pretty much would just give out.

Two nights ago, something shifted in my spine, clicked back into place, and the pain has slowly ebbed away. I'm not even cramping in my calves anymore.

I find this pretty awesome.

Okay, I'm biting. Calling the doctor today, I think. The last four miles of my long run yesterday were more of a hobble than a run, and a painful hobble at that. And your uttering (eh, typing) the words "permanent damage" has convinced me!

Nah, mine's done. So now the spotlight's aaaaaall on you.

Should you talk to a doctor? I mean, it's not like you have to take their advice or anything. I sure don't.

But you might find out whether it's safe for you to keep going. Permanent damage seems like something you might want to avoid.

Oh, yes, please keep reality at bay.

I don't think (hope) it's not a stress fracture. I don't think it hurts enough to be one – I've been running for four or five years now, it's on the side of my foot, plus I can pinpoint the wrong step I took when it started. I'm hoping I bruised something.

Anyway, this is about YOUR pain, not mine, and I'm glad to know it's better.

Reality, for one.

That's a big plus for me.

Thank God fff.net doesn't require verticality to participate (or lots of other 'ality's too, I suspect...)

Eek. Yeah, stress fractures... are you wrapping your foot up tight when you run?

Well, I pretty much took it easy for those 5 weeks. Except for the chair business, and the thirty minute walks I started to take last week to help with the stiffness, I've just been on my back every moment I could be.

I'm still doing better, less pain every day, think I'm basically back to normal. I scheduled a doctor's appointment to see if there's anything I should be concerned about in the future.

I'm clenching my teeth just THINKING about that kind of pain. I'm so glad it's feeling better! And I do hope that it was the PAIN that turns out to have been the aberration rather than the relief! I second the "take it easy" advice. :-) (Say I, who am slightly concerned that I may have a stress fracture in my foot but haven't stopped marathon training. Do as I say, not as I do.)

I'm so sorry to hear about your pain! You never know how much you use your back until you can't. And glad to hear it's going away, I'll send positivity your way that the good trend continues and you are ready for action soon!

In true "internet friend" form, I advise you to take it easy and look into it. Sounds like something could be unstable. Having injured my back before, where no position was comfortable, I am happy that your back-induced pain is going away. Hail, euphoria! 8-)
