Birthdays, Shindigs, and New Friends, oh my!
Sunday, September 26, 2004

Well, this weekend has been one I am not likely to forget. Starting with my birthday on the 24th, Dave (Gojiro) posts a great image wishing me a happy birthday, and well, that was plain cool in it's own right, but then others posted replies also wishing me a happy b-day! Now that made it so much shinier. Best fans in the 'verse, I say! Thankyouthankyouthankyou! Simon's not the only one with a new family to embarass him!

Next came the best birthday present ever, the Shindig! On the 25th the rewards of effort were realized! We had, counting the kids, 20 wonderful fans and family at Woodland Mound Park here in Cincinnati. Some drove up to 2 hours from Lexington,KY and Greenville,OH and Columbus,OH to join us, and that there is devotion. What a huge success this was! I finally got to meet Susie (Flyhead) and got a great pic of her Big Damn Banner ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=56 )she had sent (with the support of fellow Browncoats!) to the BDH's! And then came the proof that our fans are the best...Susie had a new idea for getting the word out about the BDM, and in less than 2 minutes, we had a collection taken up and that project is now funded 1 and 1/2 times over. How incredible is that? Big Damn Heroes, the lot of 'em!

We had a great time, exchanged stories, made new friends, and I gave out lots of free stuff! I made shirts and gave away toys and 2 "extremely limited edition" versions of a new Firefly customizable board game I designed. I want to post the files on the web somewhere for people to download and print at home for free, especially because there will be expansions! Anyone who can help out in that area, PLEASE O PLEASE message me! Also, someone (Lerxst?) suggested I get licensing to make official merchandise...now that would be a dream come true! Of course, I wouldn't even know where to begin on such an endeavor, but if someone knows where to direct me, PLEASE O PLEASE message me! I will still make stuff to pass onto the fans anyway I can, whether it be wallpapers or images for ironing on that I post here, or the stuff I create for Zazzle, because I want to do my part to support the cause!

And Larry (Lerxst) brought out CDs with a bunch of trailers and videos, made by Browncoats, to give to everyone, thus increasing their swag intake and making him a BDH in my book!

Oh and now the names escape me (TCM also stands for Teflon Coated Memory! LOL), but we had 3 generations of fans in one family that showed up to the 'dig, and that impressed me. The wide range of appeal this show has, from the youngest, like our kids, to the oldest, like our parents, is simply awe-inspiring. It doesn't matter what gender, race, religion, or language you speak...Firefly is for everyone.

Oh, and we're thinking that maybe it is time to add Cincinnati to the running for future Browncoat Balls (is it wrong that I snicker when typing that? Sorry...just envisioning Badger and the diamond reference!) because there were several fans who just couldn't make it, and our numbers could have easily been double what we had...boy I would love to be part of hosting a national event like that. And I would hope fans would like to visit us here in the 'Nati for good old-fashioned future fun!

Again, heck of a great bunch of people ( http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=2221 ) who helped make for a special day! Thanks to Julieanne(Beannachd) for holding up the 2'x2' Sign of Blue for our group photos! Thanks to all of them (and all of you!) for being the biggest reason I enjoy being a Firefly fan: It's more than just the show, it is what it means to each of us and how what happens on the screen is sometimes a reflection of ourselves, our feelings and/or our own struggles in life. This is why you're all special and why I think Firefly/Serenity will be around well after 2517!

Keep Flyin'!
