Fireflyfans Episode Day?
Tuesday, March 23, 2010

So I was thinking. I feel like I'm always too busy to sit down and enjoy an episode of Firefly recently. I need to reconnect, set a time, and fire one up.

And then I started wondering if anyone might be interested in joining me? We choose some day and time, pop in our disks, watch one episode, and trade comments in real time, maybe via flylog.

Well, it could be fun. But no worries, I don't expect anyone to take me up on it. :) Just a thought is all.

But we think we may do another episode, so you haven't missed out.

There were some hiccups, but yeah, we did it. :)

So are we doing this? I lost the yes or no in the comments...

yeah, i was nervous about revealing the components of "POWER WORD: IRL NAME", so i made a gmail account for some dude named "Thisisnot Myrealname" who goes by the handle of mincingbeast@gmail.com...cant you try something similar?

The gmail epic fail is still visible, but otherwise I should now show as Bytemite, so I guess I'm okay going forward on this with gmail.

*Sigh* gmail account is kleighanderson@gmail.com...

The help function is a useful tool when I'm a dumbass.

I've been looking at the settings, I don't see an option to change my name. It might be that's only available on set up.

Blegh, you DO have to have AIM. Dare I venture into AOHell?

Maybe there's some alternative?

But, for example, I just created cliosmuse3@gmail.com, and listed my real name as clios muse. Can't you do something like that with your handle here?

My parents traveled forward in time and named me after a Firefly character, so that's also kind of awkward. I'd like to avoid the reveal, if at all possible.

Can chat be performed with email accounts that AREN'T gmail accounts?

You could always make a new Gmail? I think I might, just because when you've been talking to someone as one thing for a year or so it's maybe a bit awkward to suddenly remember who they are when you see their real name.

ill be there, at 9am? wherever there is, which i am still trying to figure out. also, i am now mincingbeast@gmail.com, for the purposes of g-chat or sending death threats.

So for those of you who are unacquainted, like myself, you get to google chat function with an account on gmail. Log in, and on the left side, above the contacts list, you'll see some kind of collapsible tab says "chat" on it. I'm assuming that's it. Underneath is a search function, looks like for invites.

Under options, I'm not sure, do you need AIM? Don't have that program.

>_> My, um, gmail contact information is for business. I'm concerned people could glean my full name from it if I were to post it here. Someone else may need to initiate the chat... Probably for the best, since I don't know what I'm doing.

If we used GMail, we'd be creating a private chat. My concerns here are about the need to perpetually reload to see what people are saying, the fact that it runs the wrong way, and the fact that the comment box encourages more elaborate thoughts than it does immediate response.

Oh, and I did watch War Stories. How is it I've gone almost a year without watching an episode? Sacrilege.

I was hoping, but maybe not. I do have a seldom used g-mail account, might sniff around for this chat function. It's not something in general I do, the tone of a chat room is generally defined by the people in it, but I've been surprised before. The odds say most chat rooms are private for a reason. So I avoid it.

Desperate times.

Haha, all right, sounds good. How are we doing this, technology-wise? I don't think it will work here.

What I said, right? So I'm taking this into my own hands. We're still on for Bushwhacked tomorrow.

Mwaha, War Stories happens to be on hulu. Research go!

Actually, as I recall, War Stories was vetoed. My War Stories research viewing will have to be on my own time. Speaking of which, it's early for me on my day off. I should get on that before I waste the day away.

My response wasn't actually an endorsement of watching Bushwhacked too early in the morning tomorrow. :-) MB, will you be there? Would you mind doing the pilot instead? Or – if you both want something a bit more brutal, given you said you were watching it anyway, Byte – War Stories? It would actually be interesting to hear reactions to it in a group setting....

Hmmm, well, okay, I could do any of them. :) Bushwhacked then?

Bushwhacked is one of my very favorites (witness my recap post from a LiveJournal rewatch: http://cliosmuse.livejournal.com/15439.html) but it IS grim, especially for a Saturday morning..... Though it does have those delightful bits when the Alliance interviews our BDH's, too. 9 am works for me, but I could do an hour later (not later than that, though, I don't think, unless it was afternoon).

if this were open to a vote, i would vote for a grimmer episode...like the one with the proto-reaver (bushwhacked!).

9am on saturday? usually, 9am is sleeping in shamefully late, but on saturdays, i like to roll out of bed around 5pm, and then vomit for a few hours, before starting my day. ;)

More good ideas...

What about Saturday? And let's see, balancing out the sleep-in-factor and the dinner-in-the-UK factor, while also not tying up most of the day... There's 9 am Pacific time, be about 4 pm in the UK. Or do we need to adjust an hour later?

I also wouldn't object to the pilot, even though it's not light-hearted. Might be neat to see how everyone reacts to the details of our favorite series' opener. :-) Though I suppose it's also a bigger time commitment...

Good idea about GChat – I don't use it much but do have it! And a weekend morning (so as to accommodate UK folk who might want to join, like Jane?) should work for me.

Sounds good, depending on time (UK-based here). How about through Googlemail? Some friends and me do a similar thing with Castle episodes on a Tuesday evening - it only take a minute to get an address, then (if it works) we can do a group chat. Although I'm not too au fait with the details ...!

I think maybe a light hearted episode? Might as well be one everyone enjoys.

Jaynestown? OMR?

Since it's your spring break, I wonder how a day on the weekend would work for everyone.

Despite the fact that I've already told you I'm up for this, here I am confirming in a more public manner: day and time dependent, of course, I will be there. :-)

Wow, not a bad idea, or even a terrible, horrible rotten idea. In fact, a neato idea, Byte.

Yeah, probably a little like that. Shame I wasn't around for that, and I'm not surprised we used to have something like that.

Elsewhere? This isn't like the time I got tricked into that guard dog training kennel, is it?

Addendum: Announcement somewhere else other than chat event, like, say, here?

*is NOT on a roll*

We used to do that in the chatroom; however, the event bulletin board no longer works. (Anybody remember the perpetual Ariel chat? 8-) )Maybe post an announcement somewhere else?
