Clueless in Germany.....
Saturday, October 16, 2010

Y'alls Dorkfish recently opened her big mouth on the FB page of a certain fan-produced movie set in Our Beloved Fandom and loudly announced:

"I wish there was a Shindig in Germany."

To which Dorkfish received the all too obvious answer:

"Organize one."

Doh me!
Naturally, they are right.

Just is... I an't ever been to a Shindig, therefore have no Idea where to start.
But as I am living where there is also the biggest US Military Community outside the US, I am pretty dang sure, there is one or the other Browncoat among them.
I recently got back in touch with one "Project Rudolph", that prepares little baggies with candy, christmas ornaments, letters and stuff to hand out to deploying soldiers passing through, so that might be a starting point. You know, like arranging a screening of the BDM up at the hospital.
I just need to get my big rear end in gear and moving and find out, if it seems as good an idea to the people that need to be involved (I'm a local national with no connections to the military, so I need massive amounts of help from them) and we're going to have us a mighty fine first-time shindig.

Why am telling y'all about this??

Nerves.

I'm too scared to grab the phone and make that first call to the Rudolph-people because they might say "Nope, fuggedabout it, we're the wrong people anyway, all we do is have candydrives and pack baggies to hand out. It's a dumb idea, anyway."
Of course, they also might say "Yes!", since the whole thing is mainly to show support to the troops and such.
And the honest desire of a little dork to know she ain't the only one Browncoat in the land of Lederhosen and Sauerkraut.
(Wait, that's Bavaria.... I live in a more westernly direction....the southwest of Germany is my corner)

But if I want to find out if there are any German Browncoats, I'm all on my lonely own.....

Because there's the chance that even with advertising, I'm going to end up sitting all by my lonely self at some location, wasting money I don't have to rent it for that day, with movie-showing-gadgets, possible decorations, maybe refreshments or whatever I am supposed to have (never done this kind of thing, so I don't even know what I need and what not) and not a single soul showing up.....
Prolly wish the Reavers would get me to spare me from the embarrasment....

Oh wow, that feels very, very good to have off my chest!!
And where better to do so than here??

I know way too many people that would not have a single clue as to what I'm on about, therefore raising the level of frustration to heights I have never experienced before.
And a frustration is very, very damaging to my (mostly non-existent) calm.

I think I'll go now and watch the BDM and get me an eyeful of Cap'n in his skivvies. **squeee**

Love ya, Browncoats!!

y'alls Dorkfish.

@ Misspalindrome,
I live about an hour and a half from Frankfurt/Main if you go on the Autobahn, if that helps? I'm not too good with judging distances, but from what I saw on the map, marburg seems to be about 2-3 hrs away from me.

So, Bard of Shadow, since I find myself as one of those on-post types, where do we begin to have a shindig?

I can check with the theater on ramstein to see about showing the BDM, it's getting a mite cold out for most people to enjoy outside events....well...maybe that's just me and coming from Texas...

Speaking to your understandable fear that you might get some rejection, and that is keeping you from picking up the phone...

remember that you will not be calling to pester, harass, or otherwise bother these people. You are calling because you want to give back, by organizing an event that people (in this case very deserving servicemen) will love.

You deserve credit for this, whether or not you ever get anything off the ground. Just keep that fact in your mind, and even a rejection wont hurt you.

Speaking as someone who works on the phone and deals with a 98% failure rate, there is really nothing to fear, even from an uncomfortable phone call. No matter how awkward a conversation may get, its over as sson as you hang up the phone, and won't ever have a chance to bother you again.

Congrats on your intentions to bring the verse to those poor unfortunate sould who missed it, may you have great success in your efforts!

Hi Bytemite!
oh you're right, the pilot is much better, especially if there are any first-timers that could/will be converted.

yeah, going with the military is my best bet, if I go with my fellow countrymen, above envisioned scary scenario is more likely to happen.

Yes, go ahead and let him know, the more the merrier and its not all that easy to have a brainstorming with one self.... he can contact me here or via my email.

Oh Hi! Actually I was meaning to talk to you after you sent me your last e-mail but I lost it. Pretty area of Germany you're in, I actually was there once or twice, remember going on a boat down the Rhine. I was young, I have more recent memories of nearby Bavaria and Munchen. Not quite the same but close.

I can attest that soldiers DO tend to like firefly and Serenity. :) I fully encourage you to contact them and talk about something like that.

Only, I'm wondering if you ought to start them off with Serenity the PILOT from the tv series. It's got a nice battle that every American soldier can relate to the stories about the Revolutionary War, and evolves into a fun yarn introducing all the characters, about loveable soldier/rogues still fighting for their freedom by committing crimes and heists, and ends with them keeping on.

Soldiers will absolutely come for entertainment and goodies, so you never have to worry about that. ^_^ And some of them probably ARE already browncoats, and they'd spread the word if you advertised it...

I know a guy who's stationed where you're at, but over the internet. I wish I knew his name. Maybe I can contact him though and tell him about your plans! He's an anime fan, but I bet he'd like firefly, he likes a good mix of humour and action. :)
