I had a very fine moment last week - one that was completely unexpected. One of our students is autistic. After story time when the other kids were running around looking at books, he was sitting on the floor looking fuddled. I held my arms out and he came and gave me the biggest hug and then just stayed there in my arms.

It was a perfect moment of sweetness. There was no ulterior motive or expectation to it - he just wanted somewhere to be safe for a minute. In that moment I knew that I would absolutely protect this child from anyone who might do wrong by him.

What a perfect little moment of privilege and grace I had.

Perhaps I should have been a parent after all.
