“Beautiful”, Simon stated quietly. Kaylee turned to look at the snow laden pasture that was spread out before them. It really was beautiful, the snow had just freshly fallen, like a downy blanket. The sun was setting across the mountain range and to their left a small copse of pines trailed into the woods, reaching out into the horizon. Their tops were frosted and gleaming as the last rays of light left the day. Kaylee was a bit awed by the sight. Having grown up never seeing snow until she shipped out with Serenity, it was a real treat to have it crunch beneath her boots. All her home planet offered in weather changes were the small occasional summer storms that barely helped to irrigate the struggling farms surrounding her home town. She would scramble out of wherever she had been and run into the rain, letting it wash away the dust and grease she always seemed to be covered in. The setting was nothing like the last time she had been in snow on St. Albans. The winds were bitter, the grey skies raged, everything had been tainted with the sadness of Tracey’s death. The only thing similar was that Simon was holding her hand. They had dropped off the cargo only an hour ago, leaving just enough time for a small walk through the town of Cascade. It was small, quaint, and tidy. There was one main road lined with all the businesses of the town. They even had boarded sidewalks. The residents seemed to take pride in their sweet little town, which made Kaylee smile brighter than usual. It made her happy when people worked at something to make it better. Simon had taken her to the small general store where they shared some tea while warming up by the stove. Then they walked along the street, peering in the windows and laughing easily together when they passed the schoolyard where the children were having a snowball fight. Simon was unceremoniously struck by a stray snowball, causing him to stumble a bit forward, almost landing him face first into the ground. Kaylee had dissolved into a fit of giggles. The child who had struck him quickly cried out, “Sorry Mister.” Simon gave him a wave and then turned to Kaylee with a sheepish grin which sent her into another burst of laughter. She then gently brushed away the snow that remained in his hair. He grabbed her hand and pulled her forward for a kiss, but she put her other hand up against his chest, stopping him only inches from her lips. “Simon, not in front of the children”, she admonished with all the propriety she could muster. Her eyes said something completely different. Their kiss created a chorus of laughter and ewws from the children, though it was quick and chaste, more so than most of their kisses. As they headed back towards Serenity the landscape they were now taking in seemed to just appear making Simon stop them in their tracks. “Ain’t it”, she quickly agreed turning back to Simon. But he wasn’t looking at the landscape. He was looking straight at her , making her cheeks even redder than they were from the cold air, from rosy to a full blush. He then leaned down and held her tightly as they kissed again. Kaylee forgot all about the beautiful setting. _________________________________________________ “Do they always have to be so…spoony?” Mal asked when he spotted the couple in the distance outside the cargo bay doors. “Do you always have to ruin a sweet moment?” “I’ve…I’ve got things to do,” Mal muttered as he took the stairs heading up to the catwalk, leaving Inara to stand alone. A soft voice drifted from the left of her. “Just jealous,” River quickly stated before heading to the back of the cargo bay towards the passenger dorms. Inara watched her leave with a slight smile gracing her face. Then sighing to herself, Inara took the other stairs to her shuttle.

Author’s note: spoony is one of my favorite words, it means sentimentally or foolishly in love. Though never used in Firefly or Serenity, I felt it fit in the ’verse.
