Notes:

*The characters and their world belong to Mr. Whedon and company; the mistakes and the follies are solely mine.

*I thank you all for such a warm welcome and such shiny comments on my first fic. I've been reading your stories since I discovered this virtual world of Firefly and take joy in thought that I might repay your hard work with some words of mine own.

*Oh my, feedback is inspiring...

Hot water was exactly what she wanted, upon waking up. She had almost jumped out of bed when he asked if she might enjoy his bathhouse while he saw to some minor business waves. Unprofessional, she chided, scrubbing her arms. But she blessed the well-run staff that had it waiting, the scents of lemons and lavender mixing with steam and a basket full of fluffy towels. She even washed her hair twice, intent on the task and willfully losing track of time. When she walked into his sun-filled morning room, Charles Mang Gong was standing by the window. “Radiant one,” he greeted her, turning, “you put my proud windows to shame. I am delighted to see you; I was worried you might never come out of your bath.” He finished smiling. She immediately blushed, but had a smile of her own. “After months on a spaceship, a warm bath seems an unimaginable luxury. Please excuse me for my—“ “No, no,” he brushed off her seeming embarrassment. “It honors me to know you find pleasure in my home and what I might offer. Lotus is not Sihnon, after all.” “No,” all grace, as she takes the glass of limejuice he offers her, “it is an oasis in the desert.” She almost convinces herself, about the bath, the civil exchange. “I know our time’s short, but there was one thing I was hoping to discuss with you, perhaps over breakfast?” “I’m sure you could speak of nothing unpleasing.” “It is, however, business related. Would that be unacceptable conversation for the morning?” “I see no problem with the topic.” “There are many circles of information in this ‘verse, a fact I believe you to be much aware of, more so, perhaps, than even your most accomplished sisters on Sihnon.” Inara inclines her head, the picture of ease, though mentally sorting through possible subjects this opening might lead too, and possible exits the morning room might provide. Stop, she told herself, as she realized what she was doing. Too much Mal’s influence, she sighed. Or Zoe’s. Exits. As though a companion would need to run from a situation. She pulled herself back to Mang Gong. “--come to my attention through one of these less...regular sources, that the captain of your ship is both discrete and resourceful. I believe he might be just the man I am looking for.” She prickles a bit, but reads no anger or threat in his polished words, amused posture. “I, uh, ” – gos se Inara, just talk— she curses herself, “I’m not sure I can speak to the discrete nature of Captain Reynolds, but he has managed to collect an unusual circle of clients.” Full stop, full smile across her mouth and eye. “I am hoping you will help me join such a list.”

AGENTROUKA

Very intriguing start! I like the client and the original nature of the beginning, starting right in the story without much fuss. :)

Ooooh, intrigue abounds.

I like that you gave us a new character straight away without undue introduction. Leaves more for expansion later.

Nice to see a new poster. Especially one who is adding to the Mal/Inara goodness! Yay!

AMDOBELL

What is Gong up to? He seems very cultured and urbane, very civilised but then so were the worst tyrants in history. So why is he interested in the Captain? I would have expected him to be too wrapped up in Inara's allure. Okay, so all of the crew are rubbing off on me, I suspect everyone of everything! Can't wait for more, especially longer chapters... Ali D :~)

And many welcomes too! Yay - more Mal/Inara!

Whoa, I love the exchange between Inara and Mang Gong - following the social rules, but seems to be making fun of them too. Fabulous!

I do hope your chapters get longer... :)

A bit too short, but definitely intriguing;)

Just love how you had Inara start thinking like Mal, with her thoughts on escape routes and body language signalling danger:P

Simon gets told an old story, while Mal and crew take a stroll through the country. It sounds so lovely, so why is Zoe worried?

Thick. Chapter H: Shifting Ground.
Mal makes a plan; Inara calls him on it. Simon is in a good mood, until reality kicks in. River tries showing instead of telling. And Jayne tries to talk his way out of a situation. Jayne: Hero of all Dirtworlds? Is it too good to be true?

Thick. Chapter G. Bad Connections.
The crew’s got complications, not the least in communicating. And they’re not the only ones. For, while Simon has an unstrange, unstrained conversation, in this 'verse, when something goes well... somewhere else goes all to... pieces. Zoe and Wash non-talk; Inara remembers. Mal captains.

Thick. Chapter F. Truth
The devil's in the details, so to speak. Kaylee catches the truth in a book, and it up and grabs Zoe with two feverish hands. Mal's brooding and River's rambling are no less truthsome for being unclear.

Thick. Chapter E. now known as the one ‘with the stories’
Ledah makes her pitch, as if we don’t know how it will go, Mal ::cough, cough, sap:: Simon makes a distinction. River tells Simon what’s on someone’s mind, but not hers. Renamed for reasons below.

Thick. Chapter D. What Comes of Talking to Girl-Folk
Kaylee turns thief even as another of her mistakes catches up with her. River corrects Elias’s mistake, and Mal just makes one. Inara wants to throw something. Coincidence? In this 'verse?

Thick. Chapter C. Things Out of Place.
Starring Simon and Kaylee. Featuring River, Mal, and Introducing Dr. Elias. Elias’s warm welcome leaves River cold. Simon deals with a questionable loan. Kaylee deals with a questionable object. The rest of the crew sulks off-page. Don’t worry, guys. You’re leaving Simon in the dust soon enough. Wait, can I say that?

Thick. Chapter B. In Which the Crew Chatters.
Wash jokes; Mal sulks; Kaylee’s friendly; Book’s concerned.

Thick. Chapter A. Plans
A story set after “It Ain’t the Fall that Kills Ya” but not dependent on it. Pertinent details: Post-OiS, Pre-BDM (not headed there, neither, therefore AU, I guess). Inara is at a training house, but Book is aboard Serenity. While I might not write as such, I believe in S/K, M/I and Jayne. To steal an old song: Tell me where is fancy bred? Or in the heart or in the head?

River Plays a Hand
Fluff and nonsense, and River and Inara play cards against the crew. It's not who will win, but how'll they pay. One-shot, M/I because... because.
