Misunderstanding

Jayne knew something was wrong, but he couldn’t figure out what. Had he done something to upset her?

Was Mal being too hard on her? He knew the Captain expected a lot, and that Kaylee wanted to please him, but why would that make her cry? Or was it Simon, making a fool of himself and trying to get her back one last time?

Grabbing his towel and fresh clothes, he stomped out of their bunk.

Simon was walking innocently along the walkway when Jayne grabbed him by the collar.

Shoving the doctor against the wall, he yelled, “Whatcha been sayin’ ta Kaylee? Ya been makin’ her cry?”

“No, Jayne.” Simon was visibly shaken.

Jayne loosened his grip in the doctor, who obviously had no idea what he was talking about.

Inara and Book came running into the corridor. “What’s going on, Jayne?” the Shepherd asked.

“Nothin’,” he huffed and stormed down the walkway.

“Jayne, stop!” Inara called, “Why did you attack Simon?”

“Found Kaylee cryin’. Thought the doc had somethin’ ta do with it.”

“Do you want me ta talk to her about it?” Inara rested her hand on Jayne’s arm.

“Thanks, Inara.”

Waiting for what seemed like an eternity for Jayne, Kaylee went to the door to see if he was coming. She saw Jayne and Inara deep in conversation; Inara looking up at him with her hand on his arm, Jayne bending down and smiling into her upturned face.

Kaylee put her hand across her mouth as she stifled a sob. Racing back into the shower room, she locked the door and sat down next to her clothes, sobbing.

She was right. They couldn’t say she was making it up. She saw them, Inara and Jayne, and they were in love. Tears streaming down her face, she thought about the times Jayne had looked at her like that, and the times she wished he would tell her he loved her. She even allowed herself to dream that one day he might ask her to marry him. Kaylee laughed at herself. How stupid was she, to allow herself to dream of getting married to Jayne Cobb. He was nothing but a stone killer. He could never commit to a woman. He was only after one thing. Easy sex. No ties. No attachments. No home. No family.

How easy had she been? Not as easy as Inara. She was acting just like the an chang he usually went to. Scratching his itch. That’s probably what he’d say he was doing with her.

Sinking to the floor, Kaylee just let her tears engulf her. Wracked with sobs, she didin’t hear Jayne then Inara knocking.

“Kaylee! What’s wrong, bao-bei? Why ya lock the door? Lemme in, darlin’ ”

Jayne looked sick to his stomach as he beckoned Inara over to help.

“Kaylee, mei-mei, are you alright?”

Though there was no answer Inara was concerned. She could hear Kaylee sobbing her heart out.

“Jayne, do you have any idea what’s wrong?”

He shook his head, obviously upset by Kaylee’s sobs.

“The Kitten and the Bear are fighting.” River said cryptically.

“River, mei-mei, do you know what’s wrong with Kaylee?”

River nodded, “Kitten thinks Amazon Queen has stolen the Bear.”

Inara struggled to understand.

Sighing in frustration River said, “Kitten thinks she has lost the Bear. Thinks the Bear wants Amazon Queen, not her. Kitten thinks she has lost Bear’s heart. Thinks Amazon Queen has him under her spell.”

The penny dropped. Inara looked shocked. River knew the Companion understood. “Amazon Queen knows Kitten’s secret.” River clapped her hands.

“D’ya know what River means? What fairy tale hoe-zi duh pi-hua is she on about?” Jayne asked.

“Jayne, you’d better leave us to sort this out.”

“What! Ya sendin’ me away. What’s upsettin’ ma girl?”

“Kaylee can tell you later.”

Jayne sighed and walked away. “I’ll cook us somethin’ fa breakfast. Tell Kaylee I’m makin’ her favourite eggs….”

“River,” Inara whispered, “Can you open this door?”

“She can override the locking mechanism and let you in.” Pressing a few buttons and giving the door a shove, River soon had it open.

Inara poked her head round the door. “Kaylee, mei- mei, are you okay?”

“Go away!” Kaylee sobbed.

“What’s wrong?”

“Just go away, ‘Nara. I can’t talk to ya about it.” She hid her face in her arms.

Inara reached out to comfort Kaylee. “Jayne is really confused and upset. He hates seeing you like this.”

“Jayne. You have no right ta talk ta me about Jayne.” Kaylee spoke quietly.

“Why?”

Looking up with a tear stained face, Kaylee spoke her true feelings. “He’s my man, ‘Nara! I told you everythin’ about how I was feelin’ and about how he made me feel.... How could you do this to me, ‘Nara?”

“Do what, Kaylee, dear?”

“Steal my Man.” Kaylee’s look was daggers.

“Oh, Kaylee!”

Standing up, Kaylee confronted Inara. “So you admit you’re in love with him?”

“The only man I love in this boat is Mal….. “

“Don’t lie. I saw you together. I know that you and Jayne are lovers. The way he looks at you. He looked at me like that once too.” Kaylee looked away and was struggling to control the tears welling up in her eyes.

“Mei-mei,” Inara tried to remain calm, “Jayne loves you. He and I have never been lovers, and I’ve never jiao gou with him, free or professionally. “

Kaylee looked up. “So what were you doing in the walkway?” she sniffed.

Handing her a tissue, Inara said, “Jayne is planning a surprise for you. I’m helping him organise it.”

“Oh, ‘Nara! I’m sorry….” Bursting into tears, Kaylee buried her head on her friends shoulder.

“Shhh, mei-mei. Everything’s alright.” Rubbing her hand up and down Kaylee’s back, Inara comforted her friend.

Inara walked into the galley with Kaylee just as Jayne was serving up plates of his eggs.

“That smells good,” Kaylee smiled as she walked over to Jayne.

“Ya okay, xin-gan?”

“Just shiny, Jayne!” she grinned.

Jayne dropped what he was doing and pulled her into a bear hug.

“Kitten and Bear are making up.” River whispered to Inara.

“Thanks to you, River” she squeezed her hand.

Taking over serving breakfast, Book handed a plate to each person at the table. He kept back a plate for the reconciled lovers.

Bending down to capture her lips, Jayne gave Kaylee a tender kiss.

“Jayne, not while we’re eatin’,” scowled Mal.

Jayne ignored him. “Ya can tell me anything….. What was wrong, bao-bei?”

“Tell ya later! I’m hungry.”

Jayne passed her a plate.

“Ya cooked scrambled eggs, ma favourite!” She pressed a kiss on his cheek.

Jayne sighed. She was getting back to her old self.

When they were alone, sitting on their bed, Jayne asked her, “What was wrong, Kaylee? What upset ya so much?”

Kaylee looked up into his blue eyes. “I saw ya with Inara.”

“Ya weren’t supposed ta see that…” Jayne hung his head. She must have guessed the secret.

“I thought ya and her were…” she muttered.

Jayne looked up . “Ya were jealous?”

Kaylee nodded.

“Aint got no need ta be jealous. I know I never said it, but I….. I care about ya, Kaylee……. I …. I …. I love ya. Ain’t never felt this way before.”

Pulling her closer, he leaned down and drew her into a passionate kiss. Kaylee sighed and ran her hands across the muscles of his chest and arms, finally sliding her arms around him. Whispering how he felt about her into her ear, Jayne wrapped her up in his arms, stroking her hair gently. He sighed as he realised how much he loved this woman.

Kaylee let his words sink into her heart. The damn burst and she wept onto his t-shirt. He held her and rocked her and whispered, “Shhhh” and “I love ya.”

Kaylee hesitated outside Inara’s door. She drew a deep breath and knocked.

“Come in!”

Peeking around the door, Kaylee asked, “Do ya want ta see me?”

“Mei-mei, come in.”

“I’m sorry ‘Nara. I don’t know what happened. I just felt overwhelmed.”

“You wouldn’t get so jealous if you didn’t love him so much.”

“But you’re ma best friend. If I can’t trust you, who can I trust?”

“Try trusting yourself, your man and then me. I thought I was your friend.”

“Ya are….”

Inara hugged her and kissed the top of her head.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. “

“Ssh, mei-mei. Just relax….. I’ll brush ya hair.”

Kaylee at on the floor, and Inara brushed her hair. Dropping off to sleep, Kaylee finally let herself relax.
