Simon rinsed the blood off the medical instruments and put them into the sterilizer. Picking up the soiled sheets and scrubs and put them into a basket for washing.

“Twenty hours was a long labour, Jayne. The first birth is always the hardest.” Simon tried reassuring the new father who was mopping the floor.

Jayne looked up, “So it won’t always be like that?”

“No. That was hard for us all.”

“Worse fer Kaylee.”

Simon nodded.

“Couldn’t stand ta see her go through that much pain again.”

“You just wait ‘till you’ve had a few days with the baby. It’ll all seem worth it.”

Jayne rubbed his hand across his face and yawned.

“You must be exhausted too, Jayne.”

“S’ok, Doc. Can’t leave ya ta clear this all up on y’r own.”

“River can help me. You go down to your bunk, and get some sleep whilst you can, with your wife and baby.”

“Go down to your bunk… with your wife and baby,” Simon had said.

Jayne grinned, I’m a daddy, he thought to himself. “Thanks, Doc.” Jayne said on his way out.

“You’re welcome. Go spend some time with your new family.”

***********************

Jayne crept down into their bunk, and was greeted with a beautiful sight.

He grinned. His wife was fast asleep on their bed, dressed in nothing but the sheet draped around her hips. Their baby girl was sleeping in the crib he had made her.

For two weeks Jayne had secretly worked in the engine room with Kaylee’s tools. Each night when she fell asleep he crept out of their bunk to work on his secret project.

He bought some fragrant pine wood on Pacquin. He measured, cut and shaped the wood to a design he had worked out on a scrap of paper.

Then he took the wood and etched some beautiful designs on each piece. The design needed no nails, but used interlocking joints

Jayne fitted the pieces together, applied the varnish and it was finished. A baby’s cradle on beautifully smooth rockers, just like the one his mother had used for him and his brothers and sisters.

He had carved on it flowers, teddy bears, ribbons and butterflies; all things that little girls loved. Last of all Jayne carved their little girl’s name: Emmy. They had decided to name her after Jayne’s beloved grandmother. Emily, but always called Emmy.

His family. They were so beautiful. He smiled as he remembered Kaylee’s look of surprise as he carried her back to their bunk after giving birth.

“Jayne, what’s that?” she pointed to a small wooden piece of furniture in their bunk.

“It’s a cradle.”

“For our baby! When did you have time to get it?”

“I worked on it while you were sleeping. I carved Emmy’s name on it, see.”

“Jayne ya made it!” her eyes filled up with tears, “It’s so beautiful. Thank you,” she whispered.

“Hey now,” he joked, “no tears. This is somethin’ joyful. Somethin’ ta celebrate,” he wiped the tears from her cheeks and pressed a tender kiss against her lips.

“Let’s see how she looks in it?” Jayne gently lifted their daughter out of her mother’s arms, and placed her in the cradle.

“It’s perfect, Jayne. Thank you.”

“Ya welcome, bao-bei,” he wrapped his arms round her and kissed her hair.

She yawned. “Time ta lay down and get some sleep. Mamas of lil ones need ta sleep when baby sleeps.”

“ ’Kay.” She lay down on the bed and closed her eyes.

Jayne kissed her cheek and turned to go back and help Simon to clean up the infirmary.

When Jayne had shut the door behind him, Kaylee opened her eyes. She just needed one more look at Emmy, their baby girl. Creeping over to the cradle she gazed at her beautiful daughter, sleeping peacefully. Kaylee let her hand trail across the designs her husband had carved in his baby girl’s cradle. They were perfect. He was perfect, surprising her with such a thoughtful and useful present.

Slipping off her t-shirt before climbing back into bed Kaylee pulled the sheet across her hips. She needed to cool down and sleep. After 20 hours of labour, she felt like she could sleep forever.

Jayne shucked off his pants and t-shirt, dropping them on Kaylee’s discarded shirt. He slipped into bed beside his wife, drawing her close against his body.

She sighed and snuggled closer to him, resting her arm across his stomach and leaning her cheek against his chest. Kaylee’s belly pressed into his side was already smaller. He breathed in her scent, one hand smoothing down her back, and the other resting on her cheek. Jayne closed his eyes and let himself drift off to sleep.

***********************

Jayne started awake when the baby begin to whimper. Slipping out of bed and leaving his wife to sleep he went over to little Emmy. He picked her up and shushed her, rocking and patting her in his arms. Quietening down the baby lay her head on his bare chest and he cradled and rocked her. She settled, finding comfort in his warmth.

Jayne rocked her a little longer, making sure she had settled down to sleep, thought about putting her back in the cradle, but changed his mind. He lay back down in the bed, next to his wife, and let his daughter sleep on his chest.

Kaylee awoke and snuggled closer to her sleeping husband. Glancing up she grinned when she saw little Emmy asleep on Jayne’s chest. What a perfect picture! Her handsome husband was holding their daughter so delicately. They had fallen fast asleep together, and he was holding her so gently, his tanned muscles contrasting starkly with her fragility and soft pale skin. When had Emmy woken? Jayne must have gotten up to quieten her. She was just starting to make noises again, so Kaylee kissed her husband awake and took the baby from him.

She brought Emmy up to her breast and began to feed her. Jayne propped up the pillows behind his wife’s back and watched them bond with a smile on his face. He didn’t think he’d ever seen such a beautiful sight. His gorgeous wife breastfeeding his beautiful, blue-eyed daughter. He could watch them all day.

Kaylee glanced up and saw Jayne staring. “Ya wanna put those eyes back in ya head,” she joked.

“Ya so beautiful together.”

“Trust ma husband ta get off watchin’ me breastfeed.”

“It’s ain’t dirty, or nothin’ like that,” he growled, “it’s beautiful. I never understood why people are embarrassed watching a Mama breastfeed her young’un. It’s the most natural, beautiful and innocent thing in the world.”

“That’s a beautiful thing to say bao-bei, but I don’t think that Mal would agree. I think I’d better keep ta breast feeding in our bunk.”

“Ya could feed her with a towel over ya both. That what ma Ma did. Then no one can see, and baby’s happy ‘cause they feel comfortable and safe like they’re back inside their Mama.”

“What a good idea. Thanks Jayne.”

“Ya welcome, ai ren,” Jayne answered, leaning across to kiss her softly.

***********************

Kaylee woke up and watched her husband change little Emmy. He was finished in a matter of a few short strokes. “How d’ya do that so quickly?”

“It’s a matter of practice, Kaylee-girl.”

“How come ya still so good, Ain’t most of ya brothers and sisters all growed up?”

“All except Mattie, an’ he’s a teenager.”

“Where did ya get ta practice?”

“With ma sister’s kids.”

“Oh.”

“Don’ worry ya’ll git better.”

“Ya’d better let me watch ya and then I can learn how ya do it so quick and neat.”

“Any time, xin-gan,” he grinned, pressing a warm kiss to her lips.

***********************

“We’ll look after little Emmy,” promised Inara.

“Don’t worry,” joked Mal, his hand on Inara’s back, “What could go wrong?”

Jayne growled.

Kaylee kissed Emmy on the head, “Bye, bye, lil one.” She stroked her blond hair which gently curled around her head, “Mama and Daddy will be back before ya notice.”

Jayne put his finger in her pudgy little hand. She grabbed it tight, and Jayne lifted her baby fingers to his lips. He bent down, “You be good fa Mal an’ Inara, Emmy, bao-bao,” he breathed against her soft hair.

Jayne took Kaylee’s hand in his as they left for the romantic dinner that Inara had planned for them. He looked down and saw her brush tears from her eyes. Pulling her close to his side, his arm went round her.

“Bao-bei, it’s just fer a few hours. We’ll come back and Emmy’ll be fast asleep. Let’s just enjoy ourselves.”

Kaylee slipped her arm around his trim waist as they walked quietly to the restaurant Inara had booked. Jayne stopped them just outside and tucked his finger under her chin so he could look into her eyes, “Ai ren, we don’t hafta stay long, if’n ya want ta get back ta Emmy. I ain’t makin’ ya do nothin’ ya don’t want ta. This is just some time fer us together, without Emmy,” and he bent to kiss her.

She decided to make the most of these few hours alone, and at the touch of his lips against her, she wound her hands ‘round his neck and kissed him back passionately.

“Babe,” he breathed, “I’ve missed touchin’ ya like this.”

“Me too,” she smiled shyly, bringing her mouth back to his.

They shared open mouthed kisses, exploring each others mouths with their tongues. Jayne smoothed one hand down her back, while his other hand plunged in her hair. Kaylee ran her hands up and down his arms, caressing his muscles, and raised them to cup his face. Breathlessly, they separated, gazing deeply into each others eyes.

“Let’s eat, husband.” Kaylee’s eyes sparkled.

Jayne grinned. “I love you, wife.” He pressed one last kiss on her lips before going inside.

***********************

As they struggled to get Emmy settled, Mal had more and more respect for his mercenary. “Don’t know how he does it, Inara.”

“He’s her Daddy, so she settles quickly with him. And he’s had years of practice with his brothers and sisters, and nephews and nieces.”

“Guess havin’ such a big family really helps.”

“You’ll be a wonderful Daddy one day.”

“Don’t think that’s ever gonna happen. I’m a mean old man. Too mean ta be someone’s Daddy.”

“Ya can’t fool me, Malcolm Reynolds. You’re a marshmallow inside, a great big fluffy marshmallow.”

Mal grinned. “Don’t let that get out. It’ll ruin ma rep as a big tough war veteran, and this ship’s captain.”

He slipped his arm around Inara’s waist and pressed a soft kiss to her lips. She kissed him back, being careful not to squash little Emmy.

“I reckon that kiss was the smartest thing I ever did… ” he breathed, his eyes shining.

“I agree,” sighed Inara, pressing her lips back against his, easing her tongue into his eager mouth.

Emmy started to whimper. They pulled part.

“Never realised what a passion killer a little bit like Emmy could be.” Mal joked.

Inara smiled, “That’s why we sent Kaylee and Jayne out on their own for this romantic dinner.”

Mal tried drawing her closer for another kiss.

Inara kissed him lightly and joked, “You haven’t done too badly.”

“Guess I haven’t, at that” Mal answered, “Let’s put little Emmy in her cradle and get back to some more of that kissin’.”

“What kind of woman do you take me for, Mal?”

“The woman I’m in love with.”

Inara gasped in surprise and smiled, “I love you, too.”

“Thought ya were thinkin’ on Jayne.”

“Jayne! Whatever gave you that idea?”

“Saw ya lookin’ at him.”

“I tested him to see if he was really committed to Kaylee.”

“But you were never interested?”

“Well, he’s handsome, but he’s Kaylee’s husband, and I’ve only really ever had eyes for one man on this boat.”

“Simon?” She shook her head. “Book?”

Inara laughed, “No, you, silly,” and kissed him.

He let himself sink into her soft embrace, surrendering his cynicism to hope for the future.
