I get the distinct impression that Nathan is a very touch-feely guy in a way that most humans can't manage, and that it binds the people around him together. He seems to have no sense of personal space, or otherwise ignores it, knocking down the barriers we instinctively construct in an intrusive but benign way. Like, he barges into your personal space and then offers you a cuppa and tells a joke while your trying to recover your dignity.

Look at Jewel's face: equal parts 'what is this insane man doing', and 'gawd, what a great guy'. It's official: he's made my list of people I'd like to have lunch with.
