Chapter 2: Night Sounds.
Night came quicker then she would have liked it. She enjoyed sitting there staring at the sleeping hunk of man meat. You see-Things happen in the outer rim when night falls. And none of it good.
It had only been two hours of waiting but she took very good care of Jayne, who was on a bunk. She put him on her mule and they set out back to Serenity. She was careful to park it out if sight and then she dragged Jayne back to the ship
No one was around so she quietly crept into the ship and dumped Jayne in his bunk and she crept about.
Serenity was a nice ship. It had a homey cozy feel to it. She smelled lilies, strawberries, musk, and something else she had never smelled before.
It just needed a little …
“And then we got it.*laugh* That damn goose and killed it” she heard slurring and noises (mostly insane laughter) coming from outside. It seems the good crew of serenity had been partying and the Captain (among other people) got rip roaring drunk. He was talking about some water foul he must have killed during some point.
Scorpion climbed up the wall and hid in a corner.
…
She at the head of the table .The Chairman, the wealthy owner of the Blue Sun Corporation sat at the other end. They were sitting in his expansive boardroom. The desk was a wood oak color. Perhaps from a forest on Earth-that-was. She couldn’t be sure and she didn’t want to speculate. The room was quiet and dark. The Chairman sat alone, in his expensive three pieced suit. She had seen her master once or twice in a suit. It usually meant business. His lovely Asian features were accented by the strategically placed lighting in the room. It seems her master worked for this man. Imagine, her was so cruel and vindictive she wondered how worse of this guy was. She was even more scared but she didn’t show it. She just kept her head down, listening to every word.
“The Operative failed in his mission.” He started. His tone of voice was monotone but she could sense the anger. “I have it on good authority that you are a loyal employee and would do anything that is asked of you.” He added “You may speak.”
“Yes, sir.” She said simply
“ A woman of beauty and of few words.” He said. He stood up and walked around the table to where she sat. She was wearing a simple white backless dress that her master insist she wore. White to their culture meant death, and that’s all she brought to the table-was death. She felt dead inside enough as it was. He moved closer and grabbed her face so that she looked at him. She had one Brown eye which the great creator and her parent’s genes gave her, the other; an ice blue eye with enhanced seeing technology was her gift from the master. A prototype. It was deemed a better move instead of replacing eyes to just alter the brain functions to get the results they wanted. So she was stuck with one blue eye and one brown eye for nothing.
“What an intriguing look you have.” He said as he stroked her hair. She responded by closing her eyes and leaning against his hand.
Just like a pet that was being rewarded for good behavior.
He grabs her by the throat thus cutting of her air supply. “Usually when some one pays you a compliment, you respond with a courtesy.”
She gasps and says with much difficulty “But sir, you didn’t give me permission to speak.”
He lets go.
He smiles a little and says “You are quite right. Forgive me.” He gives a small bow. It’s for show only and not really meant. “You may speak.”
“Thank you for your gracious comments; I don’t deserve your kindness.” She says and she also gets up and bows.
“So I suspect you will take the job.” He says, adding a quick nod so she can respond.
He begins to stroke her hair again. “Only if it pleases you, sir.” She feels all kinds of disgusted but can’t respond in her usual way. If this were some common man she would have sliced off his hand. But since this is her boss’s boss she refrains from any emotion other then total submitting.
“Of course you will, and then you will please me.” he says then adds “Alive or dead. I don’t care.” He puts the file on the table in front of her.
River Tam.
After much effort (and much zig zagging) the drunk Captain makes his way up the stairs (with the help of the fancy looking doctor and the Amazon warrior). Scorpion looked on amused.
The young mechanic named Kaylee threw up in a corner, much to the chagrin of the Captain.
“You are going to clean that up tomorrow.” He said “And then we will lift off to get the cargo to the buyer off world.”
Scorpion had forgotten about the cargo, it looked like some sort of greens, but it smelled like…
“I can’t believe you actually want to give them our mint!” Kaylee slurred. She was pouting. It was cute.
So that’s what that smell was.
After seeing the Captain and company stagger towards the med bay she saw the target stay behind.
“Mine.” She said.
Scorpion closed her eyes and visualized Jayne sleeping in his bunk.
River closed her eyes and they stared back at each other
“Hello River.” She said.
“Hello Maria.” River responded. Inside the mind, all secrets are revealed.
“We must meet face to face. Outside. In 15 minutes.” Scorpion added, her smiled could scare even the strong hearted.
“Is that when I kill you?” River said. Maria knew that River had very good combat skills.
“You can try.” She said. “But I assure you, I’m the least of your problems.”
River smiled and turned and left.
Scorpion came down from her hiding spot and snuck down the stairs where she stepped on something. It was a tiny plastic dinosaur- a Stegosaurus. She heard a faint voice: Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal
She smiled, pocketed it and snuck out
She had a mission to complete
