On The Edge: Epilogue
Monday, April 9, 2007

Simon and Kaylee's last few moments before Serenity falls out of the sky. S/K. Post movie.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 3645    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

Mal4Prez felt I needed this to bookend the Prologue. So, I wrote this in hopes to appease her. She is, after all, a FAR better writer, so I tend to listen to what she says:)

Anyway, the Prologue and Epilogue of this story are told in 'present time'. The rest of the story is the past, and what led to these moments.

It's a bit different kind of story telling than I usually do, and when I had the idea, I wanted to explore it.

There are some things not covered in this epilogue for a reason.

Chapter 12 can be found Here

Thanks to Mal4Prez for the beta.

-------------- Epilogue --------------

Simon winced as his back hit the deck, Kaylee’s weight hitting him directly in the gut. Sparks flew and metal whined as it was stretched to the snapping point. Lights flickered off, glass shattered, and smoke poured from cracks in seals that he should not have been able to see through. Small splinters of light shooting through the hull were nearly blinding in their sharp contrast to the dark room.

He wrapped his arms around Kaylee in an effort to shield her body from debris hurling about the room, but it was no use. There were simply too many. He couldn’t protect himself, much less the pregnant woman in his arms. But he tried. He covered her head with one hand and her abdomen with another.

The floor buckled and Simon rolled over to try and further shield Kaylee. Just as he moved, the ceiling cracked and something hurled its way down toward them like a heat seeking missile and struck Simon in the back of the head, momentarily knocking him unconscious.

He roused at the sound of Kaylee’s strangled cry, and with a groan, he glanced down to see her gasping for breath, hands tightly cradling her stomach.

Simon took a deep breath and closed his eyes in an effort to force away the dizziness. He hadn’t prayed in a long time. In the split second it took his mind to decide what to do, Simon prayed to any God that would listen to save Kaylee and their child.

Large heavy panels crashed beside them on the deck, and Simon panted heavily as he pulled himself and Kaylee to her feet.

“We need to get to the Infirmary!” Simon cried over the noise.

Kaylee doubled over in his arms, her weight forcing him against a buckling wall. “Can’t! Hurts too much!” She reached out to steady herself against him, her body trembling.

“We need do this!” He coughed as the smoke pouring from the engine began to affect his breathing.

Kaylee’s head whipped around to take in the damage her ship had already sustained. “Serenity –“

Simon’s voice was suddenly calm. “There’s nothing more you can do for her.”

Kaylee’s eyes met his and he could read her fear as easily as he could understand the complexity of the latest medical procedure. He was certain the look only mirrored his own.

She didn’t speak, only clutched his hand tightly in acceptance and began to follow him out of the room. Then out of the corner of his eye he noticed it; the large, metal beam sailing toward their heads, its descent slowed as it struck any obstacle in its path and crushed it. Simon knew they wouldn’t have enough time to get out of its path; so he pushed Kaylee just as the beam struck his back and knocked him to the floor.

Kaylee screamed and all Simon could remember before his vision went black was his prayer.

~*~

Elsewhere, as the ground rapidly approached, River closed her eyes, tightened her fingers around the controls to steady the ship as best she could, and braced herself for impact.

I won't even ask if you liked it. I'm quite positive you didn't!

But leave a review anyway:)

Liked it only because I know you and I know how much you relish the angst. This is heart-breaking in its brevity and its ability to pack a wallop. Obviously things are not going to "end" well for our BDHs, Simon and Kaylee especially. I hate to think of what's coming next - however, I am more than glad that you have started the sequel.

This is painful in its suspected outcome, but so well written, I don't mind. I think you and Mal4Prez could easily tie for that best writer title.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamnnnn....
That WAS angst incarnate! My hat goes off to you... err, that is to say, IF I had a hat to tip... well, if I did, then I would... err, yeah, that ALMOST made sense.

>I mean... crap, they're all gonna die, aren't they Even Joss isn't that mean!

I've been saying all along that two people die. . . you just won't know who until the sequel.

>Okay, now I want to cry.

That means I've done my job. Keep those tissues handy . . .

You really pulled all the stops out to make this so much NOT an epilogue but more of a teaser to whatever you have planned to write next. Now we're all going to be worried not just about Kaylee and Simon but primarily whether the baby will survive! - Ali D :~)

K, me been a bad girl. This is the first time I have showed up as a reviewer. I love your stuff!!! Your one of the few I can sit down and read and be completely engrossed to the point I see it on my mind as though it was on TV!

Then you do this, you leave it like on a cliffhanger where we have to wait for 5 months during a summer break. How could you do that (runs away crying, but then comes back)

That just mean...lol but I know how it goes, and I do hope you hurry and give us more. Please, I can beg, I can demand,...say the word and I'll do it :) lol.

Great job again and I'll be waiting for the next bit!

I really like the description of the ship falling apart. I don't know if I've mentioned, but you're very good at writing the technical stuff (or at least making it up!) ;) Either way, it's very engrossing. I'm eager to see what you do with the fallout. -A

Just finished reading the entire thing.

First of all I loved it. It was an awesome gripping story. The writing was great. There were funny parts and oh the tension.
Second. - How could you! You best be writing a sequel. Are they all going to be ok I just can't wait to find out.

Thanks for a great evening, even if it did leave me somewhat anxious.

MAL4PREZ

Hi all! I'm one of LeaiSky's beta readers, and a very tough one at that LOL! I have to say, a writer as prolific and popular as she is doesn't have to stand for the grief I give her, but she's been gracious and open-minded throughout. Not that she's a pushover - we each have our own approaches and taste. This has led to a lot of interesting discussions, *not arguments*, which is super cool. I've learned a few things myself in the process - it's been a great experience!

BTW - I'm really glad you all like the sequel (or if you don't like it, it's in a good way LOL!) because I really pushed her to add it!

Finally... Ha-Ha! I get to see the sequel before you guys do! :p (Except Tamsibling - she's seen it already!)

I meant to say the added "epilogue" - not "sequel". Duh! That shows where my mind is LOL!

Thank God you're doing a sequel otherwise I'd have to...picket or something. I would not be pleased, after reading this chapter, I feel a powerful need for comfort chocolate and some happy fics.

Heart-breaking, but brilliant as always.

Damn...this is just as gut-punching as it was the first time I read it over at FanFiction.net!

Not really what I can say at this juncture, other than you have crafted a masterful piece of storytelling here...one that - I think - would have made a brilliant season 3 cliffhanger ending has Fox not decided to bow to the LCD mentality and can the BDS when it did. I am especially impressed with how tight this epilogue was with how much it conveyed in so few words, since we get this massive scene where the engine room is jsut dissolving around SImon and Kaylee and Simon's doing his damndest to save Kaylee and their unborn child. Really getting the feeling that the two deaths will not be solely a surprise or a given. Simon's injuries seem fatal...but we haven't gotten scenes looking at what was going on elsewhere betweens the engine room and the cockpit. Lots of potential harm could be happening in the dining room or lounge...
