“Aw, ya big baby! Stay still.” She pinched the cactus spine against the edge of Jayne’s knife with a hard little fingernail and yanked.

“Ow!” the big merc squirmed uncomfortably, glancing back over his shoulder. “Tell me you’re near done. Please?”

Kaylee rolled her dark eyes and tried not to snicker. “I just can’t figure you out. You been shot, stabbed, smacked in the head with a wrench.”

“Yeah? So what?”

“So ya never made such a fuss, as I can recall.” She zeroed in on another of the wicked spines embedded in the merc, grabbed and yanked.

Jayne flinched. “Jesus, Kaylee!”

“Well, you shouldda looked where you was sittin’.”

*Pluck*

“Ow! Didn’t sit on the gorramned thing deliberate-like. As I recall, I was pullin’ a sadistic li’l mechanic to safety so’s she didn’t get a bullet between her ears. Just didn’t plan on landin’ on a cactus.” He gritted his teeth and tried to turn far enough to assess the scale of the damage.

“Well, I appreciate the rescuin’, I really do, and that fella back a them rocks sure ain’t gonna bother us no more, but that still leaves us out here in the desert an’ you with an ass full a stickers.” The girl bent to her task, then glanced up, her mouth twitching in amusement. “’Course, I can stop torturin’ ya, and you can pull up your pants and let Simon dig ‘em out when we git back to the ship.”

Jayne actually growled.

“Just get the damn things out. Knowin’ the doc, he’d just go all dreamy lookin’ at the scenery.”
