Chapter 3

As they approach town Jayne gets out his communicator and calls the ship “Get the doors open Zoë we’re heading in.” “Where the hell you two been and where is the Captain?” “Better have the Doc standing by, Captain got himself shot again.” There were Alliance all around town. Jayne hunkered down next to Maggie and whispered “Better be quiet Captain, there’s Feds everywhere.” “I don’t believe it, there’s Marco. Jayne, which ship is yours?” “The one on the end.” Into the communicator he whispered “Zoë we got company.” Maggie urged Sadie up the ramp and Jayne jumped down to close the door behind them blocking the view of the watching Feds. “Jayne did you have to hit every rutten hole in the road?” Mal muttered as he climbed out of the wagon. “Don’t look at me, Maggie was driving.” . “Sorry Captain, not much choice on these roads.” “Captain, Jayne said you got shot?” Simon comes running up with his little red bag. “Not now Doc, Maggie took care of it. Wash we ready to fly.” “Not until we fuel up. We get paid?” “Yeah, how soon can we refuel?” “Not til morning.” “I can’t go home until then anyway, have to pass that roadblock again.” Maggie states while looking around at everyone. “I need to get Sadie outside and feed her. Is it safe to open the doors now.” “Kaylee! Run and get me a clean shirt. Need to be respectable when we open the doors.” “It will take more then a clean shirt.” Kaylee replied with a gleam in her eye as she ran up to the crew quarters. “Who is the lady with Jayne? There’s two words I thought I would never say in the same sentence. Lady and Jayne.” Wash remarked as Jayne glared at him. “This here is Maggie, we had to hide out in her house while we waited for the Alliance to ride by. Then she offered to drive us to town past the roadblocks.” Mal explained as he put on the clean shirt Kaylee brought him. “How’d she get Jayne past the roadblock?” Kaylee asked. “She married him…” replied Mal as a loud pounding on the doors interrupted him. “We got Alliance at the door.” Shouted Wash looking thru the window. “Why can’t anything go smooth.” Grunted Mal as he stuffed his bloody shirt behind some cargo. “Open it up Wash.” “Jayne got married!” Kaylee looked at Maggie and Jayne standing together next to the wagon. Then glanced longingly at Simon as he ran off to find River. Soon the cargo bay was filled with the crew, five alliance guards and a very agitated Marco. “I thought that was you, spending your honeymoon off planet?” “Is that why you’re here, to find out where we’re honeymooning?” Maggie asked while walking up to Marco with Jayne at her back. “Just wondering where you’re going.” Marco answered looking at her and Jayne. “It’s none of your business and Lieutenant Matthews, why are you here?” “I’m not sure Ma’am, I’m still looking for the same thieves as before. Why are we here Mr. Weir?” Lieutenant Matthew said angrily walking towards Mr. Weir. “Just thought it was strange and that we should check it out.” “I think you checked me out enough earlier. Lieutenant Matthews, any way I can press harassment charges against Mr. Weir?” “I think we are done here Mr. Weir. Lets go.” With that the Alliance soldiers left. “I’m not done with you Maggie. Liked what I saw and want to see more.” Marco sneered. “Jayne! Don’t, he just wants to cause trouble” Maggie grabs him and slows him down enough that Mal gets there first. “You’ll keep a respectful tone in your voice.” He grunted as he shoved him out the door onto the ground. Marco laughs as he gets up “This ain’t over.” “What’s going on Sir?” Asked Zoë as she closed the door. “Not quite sure. Care to explain you two?” “It’s my fault, Marco has been trying to marry me for a few years, wants my land, so when he found Jayne and me in bed earlier he was very angry.” “That when he grabbed her and tossed her against the wall, Mal. Then I grabbed him and tossed him around until the feds hit me.” “Maybe I should head home tonight. I don’t want to cause you any trouble.” Maggie starts to head back to the wagon. “Roadblocks will still be there, thinking you should wait and head out in the morning. Kaylee set Maggie up with a bed in the passenger dorm.” Captain said as he walked thru to the kitchen. “The passenger dorm? Thought she and Jayne were married?” “Not that kind of married.”
