This was what Kaylee in particular didn’t really understand. She thought Jayne had changed, that something new had overcome him when he joined Serenity. That wasn’t the case, of course. His ability to be gentle and loving had always been there, just reduced to some embers and a black and white striped shirt. Now they burned bright, while his mean streak had shrunk in comparison. But it was all still there, only the balance changing. [Maya. Post-BDM. Mal gets some answers but raises more questions.]

Secrets - Part IV
Hank looked at Zoe, who nodded fractionally, then pulled a miniature Cortex pad from his pocket. Switching it on he did something complicated with the control buttons and code began to flash across the small screen, faster than could be read. Glancing up he realised everyone was watching him. “What? You carry guns, I carry this.” He went back to inputting his request.

The man gazed at her as if he could read the truth off the inside of her skull, and she began to get even more uncomfortable. Finally he nodded, just once. “Shiny.” The word sounded foreign in his mouth, as if he wasn’t really used to saying it. [Maya. Post-BDM.]

Secrets - Part II
Freya watched him leave, slightly ashamed that she’d pushed him a little mentally. The trouble was, she knew he was right, but so was she. Yes, she should tell Mal, but he’d want to know why she’d decided to ask Simon to do those tests, and exactly what she thought she was feeling. Worse, if she told him, told Mal about those spiderweb touches in her mind, he might think she was going mad. And that would be the best of the possible reactions.
