Chapter 17

“You really need all this fabric?” Jayne grumbled as they left their room. “Thought we could sell it at the market near the spaceport.” Maggie answered, taking her bags from him “Help pay for the fare.” As they walked towards the spaceport Maggie spied the type of shop she was looking for “Wait here.” She grabbed a couple lengths of fabric “I’ll be right back.” She headed into the shop and in no time she and the shop keeper have come back out. He was fawning over the fabric and Maggie was able to make a good profit. The whole time Jayne was looking around, he knows Mal will come looking for them, he just hoped they could get off the planet before they got spotted. They got their coin from the shop keeper and headed to the spaceport, Jayne was looking for Serenity, thinking he saw her, he veered Maggie to the other end of the port. “Jayne! Jayne Cobb that you?” a large hairy man came up to Jayne and grabbed him in a bear hug “Thought I was going to miss you guys this trip. Where’s Mal and Zoë? And who is this pretty little thing?” Jayne wasn’t sure if he was happy or not to see Monty, he was Zoë and Mal’s old war buddy “I’m no longer on Serenity.” Jayne said slowly “Got my self married and Mal wasn’t to happy, so he kicked me off. This here is Maggie.” He shifted the bags so he could take her hand “You headed near Diablo, I’m looking to take Maggie home to my Ma.” Monty looked at Jayne “Sure are, you come help load and I’ll give you passage. We’re leaving right now and I lost some men in a bar fight last night.” Monty stormed off towards his ship, grabbing Maggie’s bags on the way. “Knew Mal didn’t like coupling on his ship, surprise he would through you off thou.” Maggie was running to keep up with the men. “Well, he had told me she was off limits and we had a disagreement about it being an order and all.” Jayne hoped they can get off planet before they run into anyone. He knows Mal can’t force him to give Maggie up, but he’s afraid of what he’d tell her. They took their bags to their quarters and Jayne went down to help load and Maggie wandered into the kitchen to offer her help. The next day they said their goodbyes and were dropped off on Diablo *** Zoë and Mal had just returned from another search of Pecos and had sat down to talk about their next move. “Captain, Monty wants to talk to you!” Wash yelled down to the kitchen. “Really, wonder what he wants.” Mal muttered to himself before he sat down “Monty, what’s up?” “Well, just dropped Jayne Cobb off on Diablo. Did you really kick him off your ship?” Monty questioned Mal. “Yes I did, he wouldn’t obey my orders. Was he alone?” Mal asked, letting a little worry into his voice. “No, he had his wife Maggie with him, pretty little thing, great cook too. How come you didn’t want him to marry her?” “Is that what he told you, he tricked her off this ship and I want her back!” Mal yelled. “No, it’s what she told me, what’s going on Mal.” Monty was now a little worried himself. “I kicked Jayne off the ship because I told him to leave her alone and he said no. They weren’t married when they left. You said they were on Diablo, thanks for the heads up Monty, I owe you.” Mal disconnected and ran down to the kitchen “Wash, we’re going to Diablo. That jackass told Monty that they was married, I’ll kill him. Send another wave to Inara and Book, let them know it will be another few days before we can swing by and pick them up.”
