We all wonder about Book's past... This is my take, for what it's worth. (To Billy Joel's 'The Stranger')

CATEGORY: FILK    TIMES READ: 1692    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

Well we all have a past

We’d prefer not to remember

All those things we wish we’d never done

That haunt our midnight dreams

Some have ugly words and deeds

Some have death, some have betrayal

But whatever crimes they carried out

Can never be redeemed

Once I used to believe

The result was all that mattered

That the end excused the method

And the end I sought was right

But I’ve seen too much of death

Too much innocence I’ve shattered

Too much blood has stained my fingers

And been soaked up by the night

So now I need to start again

Find out who I am

Live with what I’ve done

This book and cloth my only guide

This ship my one last chance

To change what I’ve become

There’s a child on the ship

Who so strongly needs defending

And perhaps if I can keep her safe

The slate will be wiped clean

Though I know I don’t deserve it

What I’ve broken there’s no mending

Still at least it’s one small step towards

A life that’s less obscene

So this is how I start again

Start to make amends

Redefine my soul

And perhaps if I succeed

The ghosts of all I’ve been

Will at last release their hold
