Was that giggling on his bridge? Mal could hear it from his bunk with the hatch open and thought to himself that it better not be Kaylee and the doc. Climbing up the ladder with some irritation, he began to think up some new rules for the ship, like no sex, ever, 'cept maybe 'Nara's shuttle. No, no sex, not even in designated areas. He was sick of it! As Mal neared he heard a tinny voice relaying a story with intermittent snickering. That girl was on the cortex again! “....and then I told him I had no idea where-” “Hold on.” River was facing the Captain as he entered the cockpit with a sweet, innocent smile, “Yes?” Mal hated it when she tried to look all sweet and innocent. “River, that is not a play thing. Every gorram minute you’re on the cortex with that boy. We use it for work.” “This is about work.” “I was under the impression that criminal type business had a lot less gigglin’ involved.” “It’s funny when Jayne gets shot.” “Well.. yah....but that ain’t the point. Wait, Mischa has a job for us?” “Talk to him.” Mal leaned over the pilot’s chair and addressed Mischa on the wave screen,” Mischa.” “Hey, Mal.” “So, you wanna talk business?” “I was telling River that Katya said there might be some work in Fortiscue, out on Aberdeen.” “Aberdeen, eh? Haven’t been out there in a while. Ya sister still on Ezra?” “No, she’s working a job on Bellerophon, but she told me to tell you that to contact an Elmer Martin. He runs the local ring out there, got a shipment that needs to be sent off world, discretely.” “Wouldn’t be knowin’ what that cargo is, now wouldya?” Last time he went into a discrete-like smuggling job, his cargo bay had been filled with cows, and cow shit. “Nope, just passing a message.” Work had been a little dry and Aberdeen wasn’t but a day’s ride from where they were. It was as good a lead as any. “All right, well, we’ll check it out. Thanks, and give your sister my regards.” “I will.” Mal stood there, waiting for the vid screen to close, expecting River to begin entering the new coordinates. “Captain?” River looked up with the eyes of a teenager who was wholly embarrassed that he was invading her privacy. “Oh? Yeah...y’all ain’t done. Well, hurry up! Work before play!” Mal shook his finger at River to make his point. He then turned from the bridge smiling. This was gonna be good.

“We’re goin’ ta Aberdeen!” Kaylee exclaimed, clapping her hands with excitement. She then flung herself into the captains arms with a squeal of delight. Mal couldn’t help but smile a bit. Her enthusiasm was overwhelming but always infectious. “Now, control yourself, girl. We’re goin’ for work. But I don’t see no reason ya can’t have a little visit with your folks.” At the mention of Kaylee’s parents, Simon’s heart dropped to the pit of his stomach as his eyes widened. He thought to himself-Ta ma de. Mal looked over Kaylee’s shoulder with a knowing smirk. Jayne slapped Simon’s back, causing him to sputter forward, still in a little state of shock. Zoe sat back in her chair laughing at Simon and River entered from the hallway, a grin spread from ear to ear. Completely in her own world, Kaylee turned excitedly to face every one at the table, “Oh, this is so shiny!!! I gotta give my mama a wave!” With that , Kaylee bounced out of the kitchen and all eyes turned to Simon. He sunk his head into his hands, to uproarious laughter.
