Speculative system map 3.2
Saturday, December 10, 2005

Last version, I promise. I re-ordered the inner planets to match the map shown at the start of the movie (the so-called "sensei map"). Also, I've created a hex grid version that can be used for roleplayers, it's going up right beside this one.

I really love your maps. It helps a bit when writing fanfics to have a good reference to all the planets! One question, wouldn't Shadow be habitable? Did Mal say he was from Shadow, or did I mishear? Thanks for making these!

Thanks, glad the maps are of use!

In the Serenity roleplaying game it says that Shadow was bombed so much in the war that it is now uninhabitable. The RPG is not quite "canon". However, in the intro Joss wrote for the Official Visual Companion he said that Mal's homeworld was "destroyed" - whether that means it was rendered uninhabitable or is just in really bad shape is up to you. Of course, I always imagined that Mal's return to Shadow (whatever state it's in) would make a great TV episode, fanfic, or gaming session...

funny....it looks a bit like Heinlein could maybe smack into another one of the plants cuz its orbit crosses over the orbits of so many others.....improbable...i guess....but entirely posssible i would imagine....

While this map looks 2D, in the modelling program I used to create the system Heinlein's orbit is actually at an angle to the rest of the plane of the system. Salisbury is the same. Thus, for most of their orbits those planets are well above the orbits of the other planets.

Does Dyton appear on that chart? My mistake, I must be going blind. Stick it in wherever you like, and I'll add it to the next version. I debated adding a bunch of unlabelled planets and moons so that people could add in their own planets while playing the RPG (or writing a fanfic, etc.) but decided to just go with known names.

The modelling program I used was Poser, which is used mostly for 3D human figures, but is fine when all you want is a bunch of spheres to represent planets and transparent planes to represent orbital pathes. The background is pasted in.

Here’s another of my ship designs for the Serenity roleplaying game. This one is influenced by the classic pony express of the old west. I wanted something slightly smaller than a Firefly but somewhat faster, used mainly as a courier or light transport. After designing several more functional, industrial-type ships I wanted to make something that a group of player characters might be flying around in.
