Original lyrics From one doomed struggle to another...(Easter Rebellion, 1916, in Ireland) Oh in a vale once named for peace once, back in better days I saw the transports give out troops I heard the soldiers say we must hold this vale, and we dare not fail for it is Hera's key And the Greycoats' threat with full force they met In the vale of Serenity On Hera then we made our stand we came from near and far our hearts were light for our cause was right Though long and hard the war We all spurned life 'neath Alliance rule 'twas better to die free But Alliance skiffs drove us to the cliffs In the Vale of Serenity Our hope was bleak in the seventh week Our gen'rals had been felled Yet whene'er they came, we sent them back And to the end we held and amongst our dead, this the oath we said Independent to always be and though they beat us down still we stood our ground In the vale of Serenity Sihnon and Londinium Said the system should be one But some of us thought differently and went to get our guns So battle rang all through Du-Khang and in Sturges' wracked debris And forever sleep those who'd freedom keep in the vale of Serenity Then the orders came to give up the game We were to lay down arms For the war was done, the Alliance won But we were not safe from harm for we'd been betrayed and two weeks we lay While the generals agreed in droves we died just to salve their pride In the vale of Serenity Back to the vale I never did go But it ne'er shall leave me more For the old me burned never to return In the fires of the war And to God I'd pray for their souls each day If He was there to see But no God could do what He put us through In the Vale of Serenity
From one doomed struggle to another...(Easter Rebellion, 1916, in Ireland)
Oh in a vale once named for peace
once, back in better days
I saw the transports give out troops
I heard the soldiers say
we must hold this vale, and we dare not fail
for it is Hera's key
And the Greycoats' threat with full force they met
In the vale of Serenity
On Hera then we made our stand
we came from near and far
our hearts were light for our cause was right
Though long and hard the war
We all spurned life 'neath Alliance rule
'twas better to die free
But Alliance skiffs drove us to the cliffs
In the Vale of Serenity
Our hope was bleak in the seventh week
Our gen'rals had been felled
Yet whene'er they came, we sent them back
And to the end we held
and amongst our dead, this the oath we said
Independent to always be
and though they beat us down still we stood our ground
Sihnon and Londinium
Said the system should be one
But some of us thought differently
and went to get our guns
So battle rang all through Du-Khang
and in Sturges' wracked debris
And forever sleep those who'd freedom keep
in the vale of Serenity
Then the orders came to give up the game
We were to lay down arms
For the war was done, the Alliance won
But we were not safe from harm
for we'd been betrayed and two weeks we lay
While the generals agreed
in droves we died just to salve their pride
Back to the vale I never did go
But it ne'er shall leave me more
For the old me burned never to return
In the fires of the war
And to God I'd pray for their souls each day
If He was there to see
But no God could do what He put us through
