The Big Damn Rescue begins. Sorry about the short chapter, no time to finish writing the whole rescue tonight.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 3199    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

The thunderous roar of the crowd seemed to fade into silence, leaving only the pounding beat of amplified music hammering at Mal's dizzy and muddled senses. Every nerve and every muscle in his body seemed to be shaking from pain and exhaustion, but he felt his limbs go heavy, cold. He gasped for breath, confused. The pill Inara had given him had relaxed him, dulled his senses, dulled the pain, but this was new. Was he just hallucinating now? Was this the drug, or had his mind just given up trying to cope, and invented its own reality?

He tried to focus his stinging eyes, realizing he couldn't see the man who'd spent the last eternity slamming a whip against his now blood-soaked body, realizing that the onslaught seemed to have stopped. Somehow, I doubt this is a good thing, he thought bitterly.

Even Jayne, who'd spent the entire evening screaming curses in his general direction, seemed to have fallen silent. What the hell is happening?

Simon heard the sounds of the crowd fade away slowly until there were no more. He stared at the small transmitter in his hand. It didn't seem real. None of this seemed real. It felt like playacting, like the games he and River had played as a child.

Simon the adult, Simon the doctor didn't go sneaking around darkened platforms planting bombs, didn't have a gun loaded with real bullets in a holster strapped to his leg like he was some sort of cowboy, didn't slam people's heads into metal staircases. Wasn't about to press a button that would trigger an explosion powerful enough to blow a hole in the largest building he'd ever seen.

"Blowing the roof in ten seconds, cover your ears," he announced calmly.

Simon pinned his head between his arms to protect his hearing from the sound of the blast and closed his eyes. This is not a game. This is real, and don't you even think about forgetting it, he reminded himself as he depressed the button. ____________________________________________________________

Inara docked with Serenity and switched off the engine of her shuttle. She exited the small cockpit and sat on the bed to collect her thoughts. Kaylee needs someone to talk her through this, she thought. She knew it'd do her good too, having something to keep your mind occupied. Something to keep her from thinking about Mal.

Tears welled up in her eyes. Not now, she told herself firmly. She resolved to give herself the few seconds she needed and buried her head in her hands, only to see the image of Mal's tortured face, of the expression in his eyes. Unable to contain her emotions one moment longer, Inara found herself face down on the bed, the comforter clutched desperately in her fists as sobs racked her body uncontrollably.

Mal flinched as a huge explosion ripped the air, shaking the very ground beneath him. He tried to turn his head, tried to assess his surroundings, and found himself completely unable to move, his body refusing to obey even the most basic of commands. He could smell smoke in the air, his ringing ears registering pieces of debris thudding to the ground. This was real. No matter how far gone he might be, he knew his brain was not capable of simply making up something this earth-shattering. Was this some sort of grand finale? Fireworks? No. Too loud. An attack.

For a split second he questioned his grip on reality again. Was he still fighting the war? Had all of this been a bad dream? Was he really lying on the floor of Serenity Valley, under attack, pinned down, trying to fight on through the hours and days that seemed to stretch into years? Was Zoe lying in a trench beside him? Zoe. My God. They came. They're here.

Yup, they came, they're here and the brought some thrilling heroics even if it was in itty, bitty chapter form.

I love this series! Some great visuals. Also your Simon makes me grin like a moron with his little internal monologue!
