River exited her hatch smiling and raced down the stairs to the cargo bay at full speed heading towards the passenger dorms. Inara and Kaylee were halfway down the stairs as River called out, "I'll get him!" She slid the door aside and poked her head in. "Baby is coming!" Simon lifted his head from his pillow, "Wha-" "Baby! Now!" Simon practically fell on his face, getting caught up in the blankets as he tried to jump out of bed. Grabbing a shirt from the pile of freshly laundered clothes on the dresser he again got himself caught up trying to put it on over his head as he bolted through the door. It muffled his voice as he called out to his wife. "Kaylee?" "We're here Simon," Inara replied as she and Kaylee descended the last of the steps. He rushed over to take Kaylee out of her arms and escort her to the infirmary. His doctor mode kicked in almost immediately. "When did the contractions start bao bei?" "Just a few minutes ago." "You didn't wake up with any pain?" "Well, I thought the baby was just hungry, kickin' real hard, ya know, and then it-" She stopped mid sentence as another contraction hit her, grunting instead of finishing her sentence. Simon ushered her into the infirmary and helped her onto the examination table followed closely by Inara and River. Inara came over to Kaylee's side and took her hand as Simon scrubbed up at the sink. "We need to start timing her contractions." River sat herself down on the floor in a corner out of the way and just beamed.

Jayne had woken up earlier than usual with a fierce hunger. His stomach growled as he entered the galley to find a shiny plate of fruit just awaiting him on the dining table. He picked a fresh looking pear and brought it up to his mouth, biting down with unhindered abandon. As his teeth sunk into the soft flesh of the fruit, a piercing scream echoed through out the ship. Jayne pulled the fruit out of his mouth without taking a bite, his teeth marks imprinted on the yellow green skin and looked at it. Quite puzzled he waited a minute or two, then shook his head at his own idiocy and went for another bite. He bit down and another scream penetrated his ears. Jayne threw the pear across the kitchen. It hit the wall, leaving a juice splatter as it bounced down to hit the floor.
Mal stirred from his sleep as the scream filtered into his bunk, muffled by the thick metal walls. He instinctively reached out for Inara , and finding her not there sent him into a panic. Still clothed in only his pants, he grabbed his gun and raced up the ladder. He jumped out of his bunk to see Jayne standing in the middle of his galley looking like a ghost had just walked through him. “What the hell’s goin’ on here?” Jayne looked over to him with the most shocked and innocent face Mal had ever seen on the man. “Just eatin’ fruit’s all...and it... it screamed at me!” “Sir?” Zoe was standing right behind Mal, causing him to flinch as her voice washed over the situation. He turned to see her fully dressed, her gun at the ready for trouble. Another scream echoed through the ship and they all bolted down the stairs for the cargo bay. Upon seeing that there was no one in there they raced towards the infirmary. Mal stopped full force, hands braced against the entrance of the room as River was standing in front of him, a huge grin plastered across her face. “The baby is almost here!” From inside the infirmary Kaylee looked over to see Zoe, Jayne, and Mal all staring at her in shock while Simon checked how dilated she was. She smiled wanly at them and then cried out as another contraction hit her. “Maybe waiting this out upstairs might be a good idea,” Inara offered the trio as she saw Mal turn a shade whiter than normal. Mal just nodded his head and turned to leave but Jayne lingered, still staring curiously at the sight before him. “Ah, hell! I wanna see!” Simon turned around and with his most irritated voice shouted, “GET OUT!” Zoe pushed Jayne along and snickered to herself as he muttered under his breath about a certain uppity core doctor having a big stick up his ass.
Kaylee held her daughter in her arms and marveled at how lovely she was. Being overdue had made her more fleshed out than most newborns, prettier than most too. She couldn’t stop grinning as she just stared at this new little life. “She’s perfect mei mei.” Inara leaned over, kissed Kaylee’s forehead and gently touched her fingers to the sleeping baby's cheek. “Ain’t she?” Kaylee responded, never taking her eyes off her daughter. “She’s smarter than me too,” River interjected, standing on the other side of Kaylee. She ran a finger along the infant’s tiny little hand touching each finger individually. Kaylee giggled at her remark, then yawned, the birth had taken it’s toll on her and she was exhausted. She fought against sleep, as all she wanted to do was stare at her child but Simon took matters into his own hands. “I have to insist, Kaylee needs her sleep and I believe there are some people upstairs waiting for some good news.” Inara smiled as she squeezed Simon’s hand and turned to exit. River pouted for a moment, still fascinated by her niece. She turned back to Kaylee and the baby, kissed each of them on the cheek and then engulfed her brother in a great big bear hug before taking her leave. Simon stared down at his family, a well of pride springing forth through his eyes and leaned in to softly kiss his wife. “You are both so beautiful.” A tear slid down Kaylee’s cheek. “I’m so happy Simon,” she whispered as he gently brushed the tear from her face. “So, I know we’ve discussed this but we never came to a decision. What should we name her?” Kaylee looked down at their baby and smiled. “How ‘bout Sara?”
