Because I don't want the thread to die. ;)

Quote:

TECH FOLKS: I'd like two do two things here. First, we need a better way to communicate. Can someone set up a forum or something for us? I'm not particular tech savvy myself...

Weeeell, there's always my Shades of Fantasy boards, I think I could create a private forum there if you'd like. I'm still trying to figure out how to work raw PHP stuff on my own, but meanwhile, SoF is hosted somewhere and pre-fab, as it were with me able to edit and make new forums of course since I'm the admin.

Quote:

Second, we'll need a site for this. I'm seeing it as eventually looking like a virtual DVD set, wth special features, commentary, etc.

That would be so neat! Do you have a webmaster yet? I *might* be able to contribute this much. Heck, maybe even webspace. I have some, after all.

Quote:

ARTISTS: Not sure how we want to do this yet (treatments, full scripts for every episode, etc), but I think it would be great to have whatever we write illustrated in some way (storyboards, etc).

If we design the site to imitate a DVD menu system, the storyboards could be an extra. The main episodes could be done as scripts, perhaps interspersed with Photoshopped pics or illustrations.

Side note: it might also be fun to include fake ad breaks. Like advertizing Blue Sun coffee or Fruity Oaty Bars! (Or maybe that could be just an extra...).

I think it'd be neat to do the episodes in flash format, of course, but you'd need a REALLY experienced flash cartoonist to do that, right? Or at least a really good one who knows their stuff.

Of course, you'd also need voice actors for that, probably.

Of course, if you did go that route and do flash, I'm fairly sure I could pull off River, and *possibly* Kaylee. So I'm there if you need VAs.

Quote:

RESEARCH: Is anyone else working on a project like this? Will Joss get mad? If the answer to either of these is yes, we need to rethink things.

I don't know about other Virtual Seasons, but Joss would probably be OK with this. After all, he approves of fanfiction in general, and he also lets people do "non-canon" (read: they make up their own stuff, just like in fanfic only they get paid for it) comics and novels based on his stories all the time.

Perhaps, if anyone here is a member of Whedonesque, they could post there and maybe Joss would notice and we could talk to him about it, though? That would certainly be a good idea, methinks.

Quote:

OTHER FOLK: Anyone else who wants to participate and has something to provide. If nothing else, we'll probably need a small handful of folk to read everything to make sure we're not spiraling into madness.

Ooooh!

I VOLUNTEER TO BETA-READ!

And maybe do a little site design, if you haven't got anybody yet for it. Because the idea of designing it like a DVD is really clever! I'd love to do something like that, it'd be a fun challenge for me.

I'll also be emailing this to you.

I take it dialogue in <> is chinese? Do you know this website: http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/ every chinese phrase used in the series.

I liked it, for the most part characterizations are spot on, but I dont like the thing about dancing between River and Jayne. It seems unlikely.

I do like that you went into the backstory of Haven, and even had a little bit of a dig at Books past. Was nice seeing Bernable there and I imagine the scene at the end with the turrets would have been cool.

Are the episodes to be released weekly or when theyre done?

There will be a total of 7 episodes for Season One. When added to the 2 hour pilot and 13 existing episodes, this will round us out the the standard 22 episode season.

The web site will definitely up before season two (which will be a full 22 episodes) begins.

By the way, it's no surprise that there's more than one virtual continuation right now (in the wake of the renewed popularity becauseo f the movie). I'm pretty sure there's a third one starting up any day, as well.

Each seems to have a slightly different take (for example, I think we're the only ones who'll be completing Season One and re-imagining the movie as if it were done as part of the TV series), and it's a big 'Verse out there.

More Firefly is good for everybody!

Quote:

but I dont like the thing about dancing between River and Jayne. It seems unlikely.

I had posted this on their site.. but I thought I would post it here also....

Something going on between Jayne/River seems to be so far people's first negative reaction to this script... and it might have been mine first.. until I thought about it. I don't know if the author was really implying anything between Jayne and River or even planting the seeds of anything between Jayne/River, but really... the more I thought about it... why not?

Think about it this way.. I don't see anything ever happening between Janye and River anytime soon.. or in the near future. However... what about a few years down the line? When River, let's say.. would be like 23-25 years old? Then the more I think about it.. the more I COULD see at least the possiblity of Jayne and River together. Because think about this: Right now.. River is a tramatized teenager who because of what she has gone through is probably (even right now after the events of the movie) probably even LESS emotionally mature than she would have been by the age of 17 had none of this happened to her. She may be a genious-kick-butt killing machine.. who can read minds.. but that doesn't mean emotionally she is where she should be at 17. Jayne.. obviosly is very immature emotionally. So on an EMOTIONAL level.. they are probably pretty close to each other. Meaning they both have a lot of learning/growing to do. Thus their emotional age is pretty close to one another. Jayne has already shown that he CAN grow and mature. He has potential. Don't get me wrong.. he is always going to be "Jayne".. but as a character he has tremendous potential for emotional growth. Both he and River have the most growth to do.

I always saw Jayne and Mal as sort of weights at the end of a balance. Is Mal going to ever be pushed over the edge and become more like Jayne? Or is Jayne going to grow and mature and become more like Mal? Without Inara.. I believe Mal would become more like Jayne. I believe it will be Inara that will take the pain and bitterness and anger from Mal.. and finally allow him to feel true pleasure again. And as long as that happens.. as long as Inara doesn't leave.. and Jayne doesn't get himself killed.. I believe it will be Jayne that will eventually become more like Mal, growing tremendously emotionally... over time. A long long long time.. :) lol

So if he makes it.. what could be more fitting for Jayne's crowning achievment of becoming a man (emotionally) to know and find true love? He certainly knows what pleasure and sex is... but hasn't a clue of what love is. Now River.. also has a lot of emotional growth to do. So yes.. there may be a 25 year difference between them.. but emotionally.. they are much on the same level.

Now also consider this: A 25 year age difference between, let's say, a a 23 year old River and a 48 year old Jayne would be a pretty major obstical in our world that WE live in. She would just be in college and just starting her life.. and he would pretty much been through all that and would be more interested in other things... not partying every weekend with friends, etc. For the most part anyway. Yet even in our world.. a 25 year age difference happens (and sometimes works), thus isn't out of the question. But now look at THEIR world.. physically.. they are both living the same world.. they both have the same concerns.. they both work to live day to day just to survive and live another day.. to fly again., etc. And as long as River has to stay on the run from the alliance.. this will be her life. And Jayne probably can't see it any other way.. meaning.. he's not exactly going to ever settle down on a core planet with a nice 9-5 day job or anything. So River is not exactly going to want (or even have the oportunity) to go out and party with the girl friends or go bar hopping.. or etc. etc. etc.. that might be the typical life of a young 20 something. They both work to survive, so they have that in common. And they work and live together. Also.. neighter of them, being constantly on the move/run.. arn't exactly going to have a lot of opportunity to ever really meet and actually fall in love with anyone else. Sad.. but true. Simon may have not have much tact.. but that doesn't mean that there is some truth to what he told Kaylee about her "sort of being the only women in the universe". That doesn't mean that they don't belong together though. And sure.. one night stands will present themselves from time to time... and maybe even River might experience one or two to sow her own oats before ever a time that her and Jayne could ever come together. But neither of them exactly has many other opportunities for love... which again.. doesn't mean that they wouldn't belong together.

Now also consider this. As far as the men that River is constanly in contact with... Jayne is unlike any other man. He is totally different from probably any man in her childhood before the alliance got a hold of her (her father, brother, teachers, relatives, neighbors, etc.). He is totally different than any other man on Serenity. And River knows this better than anyone.. being a physic and all. That difference... as she sexually matures.. may become very very attrative to her at some point... especially when she "reads" the emotional growth that (hopefully) Jayne will experince while she is also emotionally maturing. No matter what women say.. there always seems to be at least a part of every woman attracted to the "bad boy". :) lol.. They all seem to have that "gene" or whatever.. just they all grow out of it at a different age.. doesn't mean it's still not always there though.

Now also consider this.. would it take a woman... physically equal.. for Jayne to truely respect and fall in love with and not just see as a piece of property or an object? Don't get me wrong.. he still probably would see River as his "property".. but it would be something way deeper than let's say.. how he temporarily felt about Saffron. And what would be a better woman for Jayne than one that could physically kick his ass.. yet visually is graceful.. beatiful.. and appears as a fragile 100 pound woman? I think it would be very important to Jayne (for his ego) for a woman he would love to not look like she could kick his ass.. even if she could. I don't believe Jayne would be attracted to and certainly not fall in love with a she-hulk. Plus River being able to read his mind.. could get him to grow up emotionally... REAL QUICK. And who knows... as she matures and grows into a sexual being.. she may even like a lot of the thoughts he has... the "bad boy" thing may be a very strong attraction for her.. being so so different than any other man she was around growing up... or even on Serenity. Also.. Jayne.. being a trained ape without the training.. isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer... but River is a genious... but has little experince in the black. River could teach Jayne the "books".. and Jayne could teach River life in the black. Where one is strong the other is weak and vice versa. River may NEVER totally be sane.. she may always have her crazy moments.. which I don't think really bother Jayne that much. as long as she's not trying to kill him.. lol.. I really don't think it would bother him.. if he loved her.

And consider this... what would be a more poetic justice... than for Jayne.. to finally "emotionally" become a man.. by learing about... finding.. and discovering true love... by falling in love with the very woman he had once wanted to stab in the back and turn over to the alliance.. just for money. And then later still wanted her and Simon gone to get them out of their hair. And also for Jayne to learn that there is something infinatly more valuable than money.. from the very woman he tried to stab in the back? What could be more poetic? I could see that as a very good ending to Jayne's character growth.

Now don't get me wrong.. I am not saying this SHOULD happen.. just that the more I think about it.. the more I think.. it COULD happen.. and I certainly don't think it would happen tomorrow.. I am thinking more like if something like this were to happen.. it would be a few (several) years down the line of the story. There needs to be a lot.. we would need to see a lot.. to get us from that point A to Q. Just the more I think about it.. the more I see the possibility.. that it... COULD happen..

Smaug.. :)

Thanks for the comments, Smaug. My personal take is that, through season one (especially the latter half), there's a strong dynamic between River and Jayne. Doesn't matter what kind it is. It's just a "connection" of some sort, and, heck, it can be fun to play with that a little.

As a reminder for folks, this project is in full swing, with two episodes available ("The Big Stick" and "Hero Complex"), and a third on the way in a few days.

You can find the epiosdes in the Blue Sun Room, at our living journal site, or at stillflying.net.

Yea.. I understand.. like I said.. not even something that I think SHOULD happen.. just that I COULD see it happening.. and IF it did.. would be several years in the future. Like if the series was never cancelled.. I could see it happening at like the end of 7th season or something like that..

Have just read 1x17. Another interesting episode. Featured Niska, another one of our familars. It was a Jayne centered episode and quite an interesting one. I can't wait for the others. Although during River torture, would have been more interesting if she felt she was reliving what she experienced back at the academy.

SAFFRONESQUE

Hey, Gwek;

I know I'm chiming in late (longtime reader, first-time joiner, ya know!). I greatly appreciate your efforts to move this whole thing forward and listen to our blathering! Shiny! Here's my 2 cents:

No one has really discussed crew replacements. I know it's a sensitive subject, but they need a new pilot. With all the talk about Chinese being the dominant culture in the 'verse, they really should introduce a Chinese character, probably a man, to take Wash's place. There would be a lot of rich plot ideas stemming from his hiring and becoming part of the crew (trust issues, competency, even romance, not to mention his own backstory.)

In my mind, River was more or less "cured" at the end of Serenity and appeared almost normal. The Alliance is no longer interested in her and Simon. Her psychic powers might be used as an opportunity to delve into the whole Blue Sun thing (2x2, hands of blue, yada yada). Maybe Simon might yearn to return to his old life, who knows (and break Kaylee's heart yet again)?

We saw a much darker side of Mal in the movie; there's got to be more to that than just losing the war. Would love to see some prequel stuff on that; what drove him to become an Independent, etc. And please, maybe some romance for him? He either gets it on with Inara or moves on. That is one tightly wound man.

Again, you rock! Can't offer much to the effort except that I am an internet editor by trade...If you need to make things shorter, I'm your gal!!

Glad you enjoyed the episode. As with the previous three episodes, you'll be seeing a mix of familiar faces (like Badger, Niska and Haymer) and new ones (like Hicks, Gleason, Ana, Brian, Newstead, Barrett, etc.).

It was an intentional creative decision to use the remainder of season five to give closure to some of the existing characters from the show. Obviously, we won't be seeing Adelai Niska again, and now that Haymer has the Lassiter back, he has no reason to be in the crew's world.

In the meantime, look for contest-related announcement later today or tomorrow!

We've more than doubled our stable of writers since Season One! Right now, we're looking closely at the first run of episodes, and trying to figure out what our release date for our next episode will be so that we can remain on-schedule throughout the season.

Should have more information shortly.

Thanks for the continued interest!

I heard about these script stories the podcast "Firefly Talk". I am behind on the episodes so I was late getting the information on your virtual season stuff. I think this sounds very intrestering. I went to your website and since your fourm is not working yet, I thought I would come here and just let you know where I heard about you. I will now be going and reading the season 1 scripts you guys have all done. Really excited! I applaud your efforts in this project. Good Luck!

ps - if you want to get word out about your site you might want to consider sending emails to the other fanfiction sites and see if they can't give you a shout out. Also, there are several different podcasts that might give you a mention. As I stated earlier, 'Firefly Talk' is a good place to go. Also, you should try 'The Signal', Geekshow.us (they LOVE firefly/serenity and would probably promot you, and the Dragonpage - Michael and Evo. These are just a few podcasts that I think would give you a helping hand. Again Good Luck!
