Wow, that's great

if there's one criticism (and this is a minor niggle), I think the part where the 28 days later music kicks in would have worked better without dialogue and sfx - just the music to make it more eerie
Other than that, its fab

I'm gonna have to check out your other vids now

thanks to everyone who watched and liked (heck, even if you watched and didn't like--thanks for watching anyway!).

NEEDY, yeah, I have to admit that the transition between the two music tracks was hard.

Could you be specific? Do you mean no Wash/Zoe exchange, no River "they want us alive when they eat us" and no sound of the reaver ship arriving?

Just the boom and the reaver face, darkness, and then fade up on the music from 28DL? I think where I ran into problems is that I really felt that I needed that transitory moment with Zoe and Wash, which in it's loudness led me continue the loudness with River's line and the reaver ship.

If you could tell me exactly what you mean, I can go back when I get a chance and see how any changes play out. Cuz I agree that it wasn't the smoothest transition and had hoped that the abruptness would work *because* it was jerky and disconcerting.

thanks for the critique and compliments! I hope my other vids don't disappoint, and please feel free to post any other constructive crits that you see need addressing.

Well first of all let me say that, although I've wanted to, I've never actually got round to making a fan video like this, so the following opinions come from what I imagine I would do. So its not like "This is what you SHOULD do" just an opinion

I think that the two tracks you use work great, but I'm not sure if they work so well together.
So the first thing that came to mind was possibly using them for two shorter trailers.
Mainly because the trailer builds up like any trailer for a horror movie, but doesn't have the louder dramatic music to end up on - So in this way, I think it resembles a teaser trailer, that builds up the tension, but teasers are ususally just over a minute long - hence the suggestion

Or, if you wanted to keep the video as long as it is, I think possibly changing the 28 days later music to something a bit more hectic - showing clips of the reavers landing on the planet, and the end battle. Unfortunately, I can't think of any music that springs to mind

Alternatively, and this may be the one you might be happier about, is exactly what you described. cut the middle bit - with Zoe telling Wash they are being chased by reavers - and instead making the preceding shot of the reaver more dramatic (increasing the jolt factor with the music?), then fade to black for a moment and have the 28 days later music play, set to the final battle

I think, though I could be wrong, that from the moment the 28DL music comes in, there shouldn't be dialogue and sfx - just let it play, the perhaps end as you have with River's "EVERYBODY!"

Like I said, I don't pretend to be a professional when it comes to making videos, though I really want to make one - Just haven't figured out the converting of dvd clips to use in Windows movie maker

Thanks for the input! I really tried finding other music, and I'm just way too involved and in love with the 28DL music to let it go. I did try chopping the vid in half, and it just felt, well, chopped :P So I think I'll play with the third option.

Don't worry about not having done vidding yourself, I still really appreciate the feedback and constructive crits.

And if you want some help ripping/converting clips, drop me a line through my profile.

thanks again!

Smooth and spooky. Nice touch on the BW credits matching the fonts.

What programs did you use? Any bugs or glitches? How much RAM? CPU speed?

Which DVD did you use, fullscreen or widescreen?

I use Ulead VideoStudio 9 for all my editing. I really like it, but I haven't used anything else. The only glitch is my computer, which is near to full and sometimes my virtual memory gets low. The only thing I wish it had is the ability to mirror-flip clips and fade to white and maybe better titles. Beyond that I'm a complete moron and know not of these other things and glitches of which you speak. The only "bug" I ran across was in dl'ing it to begin with when I upgraded from 8 (*that* was a nightmare!)

For ripping I usually use DVD Shrink 3.2, but I ran across some major snags with the *fullscreen* (I thought that would fit the project size better. If I'd done widescreen, any effects would suddenly seem to be outside the "project area", at least that was my logic) Serenity DVD, so I turned to ...something else (DVD Decrypter, I think) that caused a lot of skips in the clips--no matter how many times I redid it. Same skips, same spots.

I finally found Magic DVD Ripper-- and while I have to rip the whole movie instead of just the bits I want like with DVD Shrink (I'm running out of memory, so this is a big issue for me), it's clean.

I take it you liked the vid? :D

I'm glad to hear it DotS (well how about that for an abbreviation), but unfortunately I can't view the video at the minute due to a exceeded bandwidth problem - I'll try again later

As for creating vids...

I've got a program called smart-ripper which snags the clips in DVD format (so they're huge files) but I haven't figured out how to convert. Someone at a Buffy site gave me a rundown of the program she uses and sent me links to a guide how to do it, but it seemed like a lot of work (including capturing the audio seperately if I remember correctly) but even without the audio, by the time the clips were converted to wmv, they ran at the wrong speed.
So... some problems

If you could tell me what you use to convert, that might help me on my way to creating my own vids

damn, the month's not even halfway over! Guess I'll have to spring that extra fifty bucks to double my bandwidth. I'll link a YSI file after work today.

DVD Shrink is awesome, because it rips the clips to VOB files, and the very intricate "conversion" process is you renaming the VOB as an mpg. Voila! All done.

Here's a website that taught me how to use DVD Shrink (it's a breeze once you get familiar with it), although some steps don't quite match up:

Thanks!!!

Well thats just great - I think I'll be able to cope with that complicated renaming procedure

It's funny, a while back I used to take a load of screencaptures using PowerDVD, but was annoyed it saved them as BMP and took up way too much room. But there was no button to change the format... then I renamed the file it saved as (PDVD00.bmp to PDVD00.jpg) and that was it. I couldnt believe how simple it was. Bit annoyed though cos I had so many captures I had to convert individually or just delete

The John and Aeryn site (I'm a 'scaper too) looks like there are a lot of steps but I'm sure its a hell of a lot simpler than the one I tried with the 3 or so programs needed just to get the clips

Your very much welcome!

Also, if you go to videohelp.com, you might be able to find freeware that converts, rather than re-ripping your clips. Right at the top is the search function with an example of "SVCD to DVD", just punch in whatever file type you have and what you want to convert it to. I don't know if this would be the same amount of work, if not more, than just re-ripping everything.

Don't be afraid of all those steps, it's just a very thorough set of instructions, and let me know if you need a hand (I seem to remember the instructions not *quite* matching up with the current version of DVD Shrink).

here's the YSI link:

and here's a direct link to the DVD Shrink site: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

also, for whatever reason, the clips I rip don't play unless I import them to my editor (Ulead)

Just checked out all your offerings, the ones I could find there (four of them? Please post links if there are more, please please please!) and I am impressed. Take that with a grain, as I wouldn't know how to do anything of what you did.

But, they were good, imho. A Tiny Grief Song was lovely. I too was bummed when Wash died. You captured his essense quite nicely!

When you do more, let us know. And thank you.

Edit: I just now saw where you did offer a link to all your stuff. Nice work, all of 'em!

Needy, it's okay to forget if you have good reason, and enjoying the vid sounds like a pretty darned good one :)

Thanks for the feedback, I really think that your suggestion works much better than how I originally had it.
