Is it bad to like angst as much as I do? I mean seriously, I live for it. I get so bored with the fluffy. I can take fluffy for a minute and then something angsty, dramatic or action packed has to happen.

I don't know why I'm posting this except I've never started a thread before and I guess I wanted to start one. That and I wanna know if I'm just totally disturbed or if people are as angsty as me.

That there is poetry.

Anyway, I'm with you. Love angst, though I sometimes have a hard time reconciling myself with it.

So, this is a question that probably shouldn't be asked, it being too personal and bound to lead icky places. But I'm curious, and it is the great anonymous internet: I myself did not have the best childhood, and sometimes I wonder if that's why I like to read angst. It vents bad feelings, and is so uplifting to see characters overcome trauma.

Any opinions on this?

Angst? Bring it on!

You're not disturbed at all. Love of angst is why I don't read Simon/Kaylee stories (not to say that there aren't Silee stories with angst; please don't flame me). They tend to be too fluffy for my tastes. Besides, if you think about it, Firefly is an angsty kind of show. With a character like Mal, its hard to avoid. So don't worry, you're among good company.

Now see I'm just the opposite. I am a very happy person, I had a wonderful childhood, best parents in the world, nothing bad really has ever happened to me more than a grandparent dying. I think that is why I prefer angst. I think it's this darker untapped portion of myself. I get real bored real quick with fluffy stories.

I'm happy to hear that! So, loving angsty stories isn't some twisted manifestation of dysfunction. (Wow, that was a lot of big words at once.)

I'm a happy and somewhat well adjusted person when I'm away from fanfic, and I've never had a good explanation of the draw to angst. Hey - scientist here. I like having things well explained. Maybe I should give up and go with it, huh?

I totally noticed that from reading the BSR blurbs! (Haven't read yet...)

I don't think I'm capable of writing S/K fluff. I don't feel pressured though - there're a lot of folks doing it better than I could! I'll stick to dark.

Just go with the flow, my friend, go with the flow. Lol.

Yeah, I don't have the greatest explaintion for the angst either. When I was in high school I had to write poetry (and I am soooooooooo not a poetry person) So I had five poems I had to write and I wrote them all in like less than five minutes. No thought whatsoever.

When my teacher went to grade them, he thought I was having home problems or had been raped or something. He was asking all of his students if they knew me and if I was okay. I guess they were just that dark. But I was never like the loner, dark kid or anything like that.

Yeah I'll stick Kaylee with just about anyone. I don't even know where my fluffy s/k came from. Like honestly, it didn't make sense. That's alright, I think there is enough angst in the last two stories to cover the S/k story.

I *heart* all you angsty writers out there.

My senior year of high school I wrote a poem about suicide. I wasn't the happiest kid, but I was SO not suicidal. I was worried that I'd have the school shrink chasing me around, LOL!

I like Joss' take on the 'verse. Make it dark, make it grim, and then tell a joke. Mixing it up is fun - torture interspersed with a little action, some romance.

I love angst, too. Always have. I think its just more intense than fluffy fic, and that's a real draw. And I think it had more potential to tes the limits of a persons character. All an all, angst just makes for more interesting stories.

Interesting fact: Every book I've read on "how to write such-and-such" (usually scifi), has offered this bit of advice when advising how to select a main character. They almost all said, "Ask yourself, who hurts the most? That's your main character." Interesting, huh? And kinda true, when you think about it. Mal is pretty much Firefly's main character. Is anyone on tha boat hurting more than he is? Generally, no. Anyone more angsty than Buddy in BtVS? Nope, she's the one who has to deal with the destiny thing.

Sorry for the tangent. It's just interesting trivia...

But, yeah, I like angst. LOVE it, in fact, and when you look at most dramas in whatever medium, angst really is what its all about.

I like some angst, and some action, but then with the fluff, too!
Course, the things I've written lately have been pretty angst. That's just because I myself have been pretty angst.

Just curious, Mordsith, am I the first one to know what your name means, or have other people wanted to talk to you about Mr Goodkind's fine work?

Oh Lord and Lady, it's not a very short story. In fact, it's one of the longest stories I've ever read.
Terry Goodkind is a fantasy writer who has written many very thick books in "The Sword of Truth" series. I believe there are ten now and a few more yet to come out.
There is magic and war and much strife. Also true love and crazy-powerful characters.
Mord-Sith are women who can steal almost any magic and use it against the original user. There is one magic that is deadly to them, but I won't get into that. Anyway, they are torture artists, they wear red leather to hide the blood, and they carry a magical red leather rod that inflicts great pain. They become more and more cool as the series goes on.
Also, they make their captives call them "Mistress". Heh.
They are very good books, very well-written, but quite long and dense. I love 'em.

Shameful self promotion alert.

The following Kaylee story is pretty angsty. Kaylee and Simon are a couple in this story. It's the darkest, most emotional story that I've ever tackled..

Ohh, good topic! Ya know....I think Firefly got me into angst! I always disliked it, didn't like angsty songs or movies, etc.

Fast-forward to after watching Firefly, when I started writing fanfic. What came out? Angst and violence, from yours truly....the fluff girl! I thought it was just a phase, but the story just gets angstier as I perfect my craft, and all of a sudden I'm finding those are the stories I most like to read.

Am I now a sick and twisted person????? Grr. Got to looking at The Losing Side (my fic), what I've written so far and what's in store for the future, and got a little worried about myself. It's not dark for dark's sake, there's story and humanity and healing at the heart of it......but dang, am I really the one writing this?!

And why do I find myself enjoying all these darker stories? I couldn't even listen to sad songs, or watch the torture scenes in The Princess Bride!

My life has been so riddled with angst that I just thought it was normal for everyone growing up. I simply cannot relate to fluffy. I always listened to songs of heartbreak and aingst at 5 when my parents split. Songs like "I'll be watching you", "Endless Summer Nights", "Against All Odds", "Hard For Me to Say I'm Sorry", and "Look Away" I can remember listening to when most kids my age probably didn't know what half the words meant. I'm not really sure if listening to those songs and feeling it in your gut at 5 or getting the scared out of you by watching "The Twilight Zone" or "The Thing" at 5 years old is worse for the psyche. I am sure that it's all pretty desensitizing by the time you reach 27. (Next month yay)

From personal experience, for anybody who doesn't like their children and is looking to do some permanant damage, I recommend emotional and mental abuse anyday over physical abuse. Really get into their head and pour in all of your own nerousis. Bruises heal but the psyche never quite does. I love the kids I'll never have so much that I won't have them in order to end that viscious cycle. I know both of my parents went through it or else they wouldn't have inflicted that upon their own children. I would have liked to have kids I think, and chanece are, the good would outweight the bad, but I never had real parents for role models and I wouldn't have a clue where to start. I don't hate my parents. I actually have more love for them than most might have for their parents. Having lived through all the suffering brings me a much deeper understanding of what it feels like to be up to your eyeballs in angst and depression and hate and I just feel sorry for both of them that they had to go through that themselves. One of them, to this day, will never stop putting themselves through the angst grinder because they get off on the angst... and for that, I am truly full of pity. There is no hate left in me now. If I have one lesson to learn from them it is that if you hold on to your hate then it will consume you one day.

Embrace your angst.... It means you are human. If you never felt angst, you could never appreciate just how good love feels. Just don't stew in that angst too long and let it fester. Try to balance it out with some fluffy. It's all about yin and yang boys and girls. Too much angst and you find that it becomes your natural state of being and trying to feel anything other than angst becomes laborious. Especially if you refuse to take any prescription drugs that the alliance wants to get us all hopped up on. (see: Pax)

I hope that one day maybe I'll find me a Kaylee of my own who will change my mind about all that and SHOW ME THE FLUFFY!
