Please excuse the naive question, but I was wondering what the exact meaning of cannon and shipper pairings is. I think I have a general idea, but I've never been completely sure.

tain't naive at all don't worry.

Canon means official or genuine in other words it's a relationship (or event etc.) that we know to have happened. so for instance zoe and wash are canon because we know they are married, but jayne and kaylee (off the top of my head) is a relationship we believe might exist but have no official story on, as such it is not canon.
another example is that the battle of serenity valley and it's outcome is canon, it was explained in the show but other battles are not canon, this is not to say they didn't happen it just means we don't have an official line on them.

so canon is not nessiscarily false it just isn't official.

a "ship" is just short for relationship and as such a "shipper" is one who supports a relationship. so if you think that there is a relationship between kaylee and jayne you are a kaylee jayne shipper.

Mal and Inara could be considered cannon pairings as can Simon and Kaylee. Obviously, so are Wash and Zoe.

Non-cannon are any other pairings that are not really evident but some like to believe they could be.

I had another slightly naive question. What exactly are "plot bunnies"? I keep seeing the term pop up while I'm reading fan fics, but haven't the slightest clue what it means. (For someone who spends as much time reading fan fics as I do, you would think I'd be less clueless, huh?)
