Serenity Summer Crossover Story Contest

Deadline August 20th

RULES:

Stories:
- Of all lengths, cannons and genres are welcome!
-Must be complete. Incomplete entries will not be judged.
-Must contain at least one cannon character from both "Firefly" and the crossover media of your choice.
- Please proofread your story before submitting. The judging panel is here to judge, not beta-read.

Need a Beta? Check out the Fireflyfans.net Beta list.

Judging will take place with prizes in each of six categories:

Humor
Drama
Action
Romance
Erotica
Poetry/Songfic

Authors are welcome to enter as many stories in as many categories as they wish, but please remember that it is quality, not quantity that will be judged.

Co-Authoring is allowed, but only ONE prize will be awarded per category and we will not cut awards in half to be divied up between co-authors. Our scissors are dull, and it just takes too much time.

Judging will done by a point system based on the following criteria:

-Faithfulness to both Firefly and the crossover universe.
-Originality
-Cohesiveness of Story Structure
-Amount of Bribes sent to Judges.

UH,..I mean, ummm.. BRIBES are specifically NOT allowed to be sent to judges... unless they are sent through me for direct inspection. Yeah, that's it.

Prizes are yet to be determined, but will be announced as soon as we know what they are.

To Submit Your Story:

Please post it in any public forum, and send the link to

submissions@jaynesbunk.com

with the following information:

1) Pen-name you would like to be recognized with.
2) Contact email address.
3) What Crossover Universe you used
4) What category you would like your story judged under.

Please send ONLY the link to your work, not your entire work.

If you have questions about the contest, please email ertia@jaynesbunk.com, or pm me, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Damn girl your quick.
This contest has been rattling in my brain all night, and i finally come up with an idea of my own to write- lol.

just a thought maybe seeing as the point is about spread the words to the great yet to be converted. there should be a rule about al entries have to be posted in annother fandoms formum.
for example instead of accepting the crossovers in the firefly catogory on fanfiction. net, the fic has to be posted in the catogory of what ever the cross over is with.

I think that makes sense, but its early in the morning, and i think my bottle of water is talking quantum physics. If need be i can return to clarify myself later.

what ever you write, good luck everyone!

Since the contest is open to any writers (I've been advertising it across the Fanfiction communities) I just stated to post it in a public forum where the judges could find it by following a link.

For the Serenity Day Crossover posting project, we'll have different guidelines, but I wanted to get the contest started and get the word out to the fanfiction communities ASAP since it has a deadline.

:)

If anyone would like to help spread the word about the Contest, especially if you belong to some of the fiction groups on the web, please let me know!

He he! Soooo fun!
I'm gonna submit at least 3. The plot bunnies are hopping around all excited like in my head! Now I just have to find the time to write em. Still, your deadline works for me. I have August off work so I'll be free to write my little heart out!

I'll have to PM some of my favorite xover writers to tell them to get involved.

I like the idea of encouraging posting at least in fanfiction non Firefly categories. That's got me drawn in to new genres before. I read a great House/ Buffy xover before I'd ever watched House. Now I'm a complete addict!

No horror?! O.o *Grumble* It's a legit genre, and a part of Firefly. The BDM contains strong themes of horror. It's bizarre that it hasn't been included. O.o

As Jayne remarks in Ariel: "Let's not be excluding people. That'd be rude." The Reavers and River will have to take up knitting.

Also, I'd love to read a Firefly fan fic that included Angel and Spike, or any of the big horror icons!

Fantasy is missing too. I think tv shows like 'Stargate Atlantis' are regarded as fantasy.

Niggles aside, it would be really interesting to see how successful this contest is. It's a unique and refreshing idea, and a great way to promote the series and movie!

Sorry, CosmicFugitive.

"Fantasy" and "horror" are actual genres, not writing categories, and can be included in the genres of drama and action.
I'm leaving it up to authors to determine what categories their fiction will fit into, but I'm certainly NOT excluding anyone from writing horror or fantasy stories! Heaven forbid!

I'd actually like to have enough entries per category to make judging fair, thus the need for limited categories. Plus, I'm not made of money, so coming up with really good prizes for six categories will be do-able, but eight or ten categories won't be.

I've been running the Highlander-Community contests for (oh,gads, Elle-Nora? FOUR years now?) so have a pretty good idea how the categories usually play out.
I only added the songfic/poetry category because inevitably, someone will contact me asking what category to submit one in.

So don't be dissappointed. Don't feel limited.

I'm not trying to tell you what to write! I promise! Not even trying to tell you how.

I'd say Stargate: Atlantis is regarded as Sci-fi and Buffy and Angel and fantasy, but to each her own.

It would be nice, though, if there were seperate categories for long and short pieces (drama-long, and drama-short being seperate categories), becasue they are so very different to write.

edited to add: Actually, I would say that horror is a category. At least, Horror/Suspense is, as it has a specific technique and plot structure that seperates it from standard drama. Ditto with Mystery fic. Fantasy I agree on -- totally a genre. I would keep the divisions as they are, though, since it will make competition a bit harder.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

For some reason I can't get the idea of Han Solo out of my head. Anyone ever read the Han Solo trilogy? It talks about the Kessel Run and how it's just surrounded by black holes (hence how it could warp distance) and I thought "Well what if a young Han Solo did the Run and ended up several galaxies away in the Firefly part of the 'verse?" It would mess with everyone because no one would know what a Wookie was and Han can't speak Chinese. At the same time, he's a pirate and a smuggler, and I'm sure Kaylee would love a look at the Falcon. I'd also like some sort of Douglas Addams homage to enter in; Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged, to be exact. I don't know, though. I don't know if I can actually make it exciting or if it would all be culture shock. Not to mention how very, very non-canon it would be.

This may have been done a million times, but having just seen the 2005 movie "Pride&Prejudice", this thought just interrupted my sleep.

Simon as Darcy and Kaylee as Lizzy Bennett

OR

Mal as Lizzy Bennett and Inara as Darcy

Now THAT's a crossover.

Well, hey, Joss is a Jane Austin fan!

OK, I'm going back to my cage.

We were talkin in terms of storyline, though. Young Han Solo being transported to the Firefly system (and possibly staying there, not sure yet) is so far outside of Star Wars canon that it's... it's... Well, it's impossible! Not to mention that I would be setting it before the movie in the Firefly 'verse, so that would also not be canon.
At this point it is still all in my head, but I've decided to try writing it down. We'll see how well it works! At the very least I can post it here and y'all can tell me if it's any good. If it is, I might brave some Star Wars sites and risk being lynched.

I have plot bunnies hopping for a Pratchett short, a secret middle length and a very silly LOTR parody!

That reminds me? Is there a length limit or could I put my epic in if I get it finished in time?!

Must remember to get into contact with the 2 super xover writers I've read to tell them to enter!

Sorry!
Jaynesbunk is up. Not sure when it was down? Or why?

Here's the deal.
Judges bailed. Two authors withdrew entries after judging began. One author had to be disqualified due to blatant plaguerism.

Here are the results based on what we have, along with an emergency Judgement submitted this afternoon by my aunt who is here on vacation: Before you question her authority, I'll just say that she's a librarian with 20 years of literary critique and review behind her. Her current favorite line is Book's "Special Hell" line.

Okay-

With no further ado!!!!!

Comedy: Lucas Harper's "SUNSHINE DAY 2" won with 156 points! Nicely done.

Drama: Annuette's "First Times, Second Chances" (Buffy) with 182 Points. Beautiful work!

Action:Upright Iguana's charming "Detours" (Farscape) with 162 points. Word from the judges was that this was too short. They wanted more!

Romance: Shiny Yukari's "Delilah" (Fall Out Boy) This was a sweet little story. 130 points. I think it almost fell into Songfic, but since there were no other songfic entries, we decided to keep it where it was.

My own Entry: "Making Do" (LOTR) was the only Erotica entry and was withdrawn from LiveJournal in the wake of their copyright problems, so, really, no longer qualifies. I'll get it up at Jaynesbunk at some time.

The winners will be recieving emails from me shortly, asking where to send your prizes!

Again, I'm very sorry for the delay and the craziness! You can all send me straight to Jaynes bunk for my punishment!
