Its not done yet , but hey I went ahead and wore it to the Lonestar Shindig so its good enough to show here right :p
This was inspired by the message, and somehow between the last fitting (when the corset fit me perfectly) to me actually wearing it I gained 10 pounds somewhere and lost 3 inches from bust and waist (leave it to me to find a way to gain weight and loose inches)... so there are some issues with the corset top being way too big and its having to be redone again.

My best friend "god" did all the sewing, I did grunt work and bought the fabrics. The necklace I was lucky enough to find!

That turned out very nice! Do we get to see it when it's completely completed?

xie xie and yes, though I may have to start from scratch again since the bodice is so large on me.

Oy! That's not any fun! I hope it works out, though.
Will you be attending D*C so some of us may see this creation IRL?

Artcat's a GIRL??

BTW, I love my Serenity kanji character vinyl window decals. They look beautiful on my white car's dark tinted windows. Even Mr. Grizwald likes them.

E2A: While at Wally World last night, I spotted this pattern that I thought could be a good Inara dress. The actual photo of a model wearing a dress looks very Inara-like. I can see the underdress in a rich brocade and the overdress in a semitransparent lame or something similar. And floor length.

Oh definitely, floor length or even sweeping the floor a little. And maybe a dupatta as well.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That's an attractive pattern with a lot
of potential. The armhole-over-bust
seam is usually very flattering.
Haven't done any costumes in a while, so
bear with me while I think with my
keyboard.
Think inside out. If the fabrics were
right, you might think about
making the the outer layer in the thicker
fabric and the inner dress in something
very light. Then a same-length slip under
that, the color(s) and weight coordinated
with the inner dress for whatever degree
of modesty takes your fancy.
I can see this post is not a model of
clarity, and you aren't here to watch me
wave my hands about, but permaybehaps you
can figure it out. I need food and the
resulting blood sugar boost. Now.
::-)
Hehe, Grizwald.
Thanks for your understanding!
Sometimes. Can't. Sentence. Properly.
Before. Dinner.
artcat's Inara outfit is going to look
gorgeous once it assumes her size and
shape, so I hope we'll be seeing a
shiny photo soon enough.
(And oh, that red hair! Is there an
Inara "do" available for it?)
Yeah, she's got sort of a Nandi vibe going on there.
I'm looking forward to seeing the whole ensemble put together. (Artcat, losing inches while gaining weight means you're building MUSCLE!! Muscle is good, just ask Jayne!)
yes there is an Inara updo to keep my redhair under control, I simply did not have the time to do it that day, i do a braided knot bun which my ponytail still manages to come to my butt then I proceed to curl all of the ponytail and pin it artistically to the bun, in the end my hair looks like its midback in length and in an elaborate updo. Very similar to the blonde lady in jackie chans around the world in 80 days, i can replicate that look which makes my hair look very thick but average length, i normally let the curls cascade a bit further though.
my hair does not hold a curl well even with tons of gel to hold it in place (stuff that normally keeps mohawks up does not hold my hair for long) and it takes 4 hours to curl just the ponytails worth, and the curls will hold for 4 hours if i am very lucky
eh its worth it though folks say it looks very elven as well
I will try to get pics up of that soon
in the meantime here is proof from 6 or 7 years ago that yes my hair can be put up!
Except for ballroom scenes and the like, Inara's coture seems to borrow heavily from Indian traditional dress (go figure, House Madras..). Check out Folkwear patterns for some good ideas. You can find them online. Sorry, no link.
Go with natural fibers where you can, you will thank yourself. Synthetics can quickly turn into a sauna when you start adding layers.
Elven potential definitely there, yep.
Ai, such a lot of work. Used to do that
kind of thing myself when I had sit-on hair
but then had to get it cut and learn how
to use (clumsily) a blow-dryer.
Dyin' to see your finished current "do."
And the gold dress. I noticed Jewel said
in DVD commentary that it took ten minutes
to get Morena into the thing.
I could see ten minutes. How many dressers? Was there body glue involved? Did they have to sew her into it? (These are not sarcastic questions. It is very difficult to lace yourself into corsetry and sometimes gorgeous things require at least one more set of hands) Try a dry run (dress and 'do) once the gown is finished to time it so you're not frantic on the day you intend to wear it. It'd be a shame if you looked stunning but missed dessert!
Definitely want a visual when you're all done up.
You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.
It is lovely, artcat. Can't wait to see a proper fit! (and I love the parasol.) Gold has been my favorite color for a long time.
The commentary on "Shindig" said that the bodice of the dress was actually made upside-down on accident, so yes they did have to sew her into it to get it to fit right. That's why it's so open in the back.
I thought that was the dress. Costumes must have been in a screaming hurry to make the deadline or something. Usually things get carefully marked in a this end up kind of way until they're put together. Artcat might want to invest in a little body glue just in case...
Sometimes a stiffly boned bodice will fail to turn with you. Tee hee.
the problem with the bodice was that sometime between my final fitting when it fit nice and tight and did the hold mush and lift thing, and the convention (apprx. a weeks time)
I managed to gain 10 lbs, yet loose multiple inches from my waist and bust, now how I managed that is beyond me, (did not know I had whole inches to loose especially on my nearly non existant bust). Glue would not be enough :p
to give yall an idea I went from a 30.5" bustline to a almost 28", and my waist went from 24" to 22" Needless to say my seamstress was a bit miffed at my sudden size change.
Also the lady who helped me lace up the bodice did a halfass job and did not even lace it tightly so it looks even bigger on me. I'm thinking this one may end up on ebay and I may just start all over again.
Yep, that'll do 'er.
Stairs, I need to build more stairs into my house.
I need to live in an Escher house...
I also need to seriously reduce my daily commute so I have time to go up and down the stairs.
Very shiny dress, impressive! What I'd like to know though is where you found the choker necklace at? It looks very similar to Inara's. I love it and have kept my eyes open for one like it to no avail.
ebay :) and it is the exact same design inara wears and color :)
I started searching long and hard for it when I spotted the exact same design necklace on one of the background folks in the phantom of the opera movie (scene where the dude that hangs is talking about the phantom to the room full of ladies a woman is wearing this necklace done in black)
there is a seller on ebay that sells it :)
You aren't alone when it comes to stairs and forgettin' why it was you climbed them (or descended them) in the first place. I have a saying... "seems like everything I need is at the 'other' end of the stairs. A personal word of advice... don't try puttin' on a t-shirt while going down a set of stairs... let's just say, did that, got the bruises to prove it
Without being too forward, love your hair. So appropriate for our 'verse!
the hair takes 4+ hours, getting laced into the dress ( I have to get an assistant to help me) takes another good 10 minutes, the rest I can throw on in a matter of minutes, now makeup... that requires assistance, I dont wear makeup so when I try to apply it I end up looking like a clown
