This comes off the thread that Arcadia started.

Do people find some characters much easier than others?

The one that jumped into my head the easiest was Jayne. (A worrying trend - so far I have written Lex fic, Spike fic, Sev fic and Draco fic. I am a wrong person.)

For me it's Simon and then Inara. Pretty much Core people are easiest for me to write, though Mal is sometimes really fun when you get a good banter going. Jayne is great when you need something crass yet truthful all at the same time! Kaylee is fun, especially when you need something sweet and and little dirty! Zoe is hard but she can hae some great one liners, and she is sometimes the voice of truth for Mal as well. River is a bit of an enigma, but I really like her voice, especially when she and Simon are together. Wash and Book are the hardest, maybe that's why I pretty much write only post BDM.

Wooh! A reply.

My take on Wash and Book, too. Core should be easiest for me, too, really, so why the big bad merc took up residence, I don't know. Opposites attract?

I think dialogue is easier than solo introspection pieces, too. Snark and spark.

Mal. Inara. River.

My own personal perception of them, of course, but those three come most easily to me and just tend to start chatting in my head. :)

I find River easy the easiest character to write for. Mal, Jayne and Zoe are a joint second.

I like to write for all of the characters, although Book's 'voice' is probably the one that I find the trickiest.

For me the easiest are Simon, Kaylee, River, and even Jayne. My interpretations of them, obviously. Inara I can sometimes get down but not always in her interplay with Mal. Wash is real hard for me. As are Zoe and Book, which is probably one reason I write mostly post BDM stuff.

For me Inara is the easiest. She just is. Mal would come second. Hmm... any wonder that I'm a horrible M/I shipper?

After that, hmmm...

I feel comfortable with Zoe and River. I enjoy writing them a lot. I'm not as good with them as I am with Mal and Inara, but I think I'm all right. I still classify River as one of my "hard to write" characters because you need to be careful with her, but I enjoy writing her so *shurgs*.

Jayne and Kaylee are on the third rung of my comfort level. Simon and Book are half-way there, too. I feel fine writing these characters, but I wish I was a little better.

And then there is poor Wash, last on the latter. I love him dearly, but I am just not so good with his funiness. But I will learn. Any advice, oh people who can write Wash?

Guess I'm in the minority of finding Book and Wash among the easiest! I find Book to be incredibly constant in his characterization (ultimately, he tells nothing but asks everything... and is polite and supportive while doing it). For Wash, I ask myself "If I found this conversation boring, what would I say to make it more interesting?"

I find River and Kaylee among the hardest, just because they're so easy to get wrong. Go too far with River and she's start-raving useless; too far with Kaylee and she's a grinning idiot rube.

Mal and Inara, if only because most of my fics are Mal/Inara centered, so I spend the most time with them in my head. Then Simon. And then Jayne, who is probably the most fun to write for when you can "hear" him.

Mal has always been easy for me to write. And I'm usually on the fence with River as I stated in the last thread, but usually, her voice comes to me after a while.

I think Mal is the easiest, although I enjoy Jayne the most. I didn't have much Jayne in my last fic, and I missed him sorely!

Who do I find easiest to write?
Probably Jayne, but then, I'm obsessed with him. Hardest to write? Mal. Mal says something silent with every word he says outloud. I have a difficult time putting that into words.
For example, when Nathan Fillion took Mal, had him look into that box full of naked River, and utter, "Huhn"- that huhn meant a thousand different things. It's very difficult to make that come across on paper.

Oddly enough (as is the trend) I think I write Jayne best. Not my favorite charachter, but likely the most straightforward. One can always know much of what he is thinking. At first this realization startled me. I didn't think it a very good thing...

I have written several (unintentional) Zoe fics too, I guess I can identify with her grief. *sob* Wash.

Wash is my fav, but I have some hard times with writing him. Don't quite have the humor down.

I find Inara and Simon's dialogue easiest. For Mal, Jayne and Kaylee in particular, I find it very hard to provide a suggestion of their dialect speech without going too far into phonetic representation, which I never like to do in any circumstances. However, I find Mal's point of view easiest to write from in general - being inside his head and getting in touch with his thought processes comes fairly naturally to me. Inara in that respect I find very difficult (the combination of these factors may one day lead to an Inara/Mal from me in his POV with dialogue solely from her). I've had moments of success with River, but not many.

This is what I love most of all. Vernacualr is my favorite thing in the world to write. As an English major and an all around lover of the language, and each of its forms, I know how to properly write. That said, I mostly prefer not to. I take the characterizations that Joss left us with and run with them. I even make up my own words. I think it's allowed when one knows standard English. However, when my dad makes up words... it's just bad.

But I digress from the topic.

I'm in the majority (I think) who think Inara is not too difficult to write. I guess it's because there's so much mystery surrounding her leaving House Madrassa - so much potential for a backstory!! Also I think 'Heart of Gold' filled in a lot of the blanks about Inara (for me anyway) in terms of her emotional er...'stuff'. I mean I was stunned to see her cry after she ran into Mal in the hall coming out of Nandi's room. I would've never known she would break down like that! Granted, it's only my 'take' on Inara that I find easy to write...so that in itself poses some problems but eh...

Wash is also difficult to capture - mostly because I'm not good at writing 'funny'. A very sad failing of mine which try as I might I am unable to rectify.

However, unlike most here I actually find Simon really hard to write. I don't know what's the balance of deadpan humour and reserve with him. Maybe it's just because I'm bad at writing in general or whatever but I think he's a little more complex than the other characters. He's very quiet but there's a lot of interesting contradictions in his personality which makes him so interesting. Fanfics can pose problems when people don't quite capture those nuances of character. Of course this is totally my opinion and there are a vast number of people who carry it off perfectly. I'm just not one of them...
