I helped write a virtual Buffy season 8 that was (I'm the first to admit this) not brilliant. We started writing it halfway through season 7, and of course the finale threw our own season waaaay out of whack. It was great fun though, and I'm hugely impressed by people who can write a virtual season and stay within canon. It can be really difficult to find fic that doesn't resolve all the issues nice and neatly, or mess around with the main characters and wind up changing them completely.

Desktop Hippie: at one with the 'verse

I don't suppose that was the one that was published on TBC&S was it? Coz if it was I did an episode for that! I was posting as Sgt. Rock at the time. I gotta agree that it was not brilliant (assuming it's the same one), I didn't actually finish reading it, it got so far away from what I thought the show should be about.

Anyhoo, just pimping my own firefly fanfic, is based on an idea Joss had where Inara is kidnapped by Reavers. It can be found here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=8267 and got some awesome reviews!

For anyone that's interested, I'm currently working on the sequel.

This was one of the first fanfics I read, and has one of the best Mal-voices I've heard. It's called Reliance, by Roseveare. I found it through through this site: http://www.mirrordance.net/recs/firefly.html.

I recently found couple of plotty epics which are great.

Harri Vane - she wrote in 2003, before the movie, and her staff is fantastic, if you can get through wrong spell-checker choices which are left uncorrected. She really needed a beta...

My absolute favorite of hers is "Ties that bind". Emotional rollecoaster, Tams meet their family, kidnapping and resque, River writes poems, allusions to classical literature etc. All her staff is here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=Harriet%20Vane

Then: Firefly The Virtual Seasons. This is differerent from StillFlyeing.net and I like it much more: http://www.firefly-tvs.com.

One more: "Choices" by Tgezha, before BDM, very tense thriller: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1217106/1/ (Add "/" to the end of URL to get a correct link).

Fanfic you should read? Mine of course! Hahaha. Not so much. There are much better writers out there. If you like great Wash humor you must read the Dino Tales: http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=ManicGiraffe

That is the best I can think of off the top of my head and one of few that I have bookmarked. Anyhow. Good luck with that.

I too have really enjoyed the episodes at Stillflying.net

Good stuff there. They have exciting plots as well as deepening some of the character relationships.

Also like that they are in screenplay format. Makes me feel like I'm reading an actual episode that will be airing soon!

Er...if you want some long story arcs with characterization, I'm punting out a few chapters (I think I'm somewhere round the 70,000+ word mark, and the muse has just fired up again).

It's post-BDM, pretty much canon, and there are some folk out there that like it.

There are some truly good fanfics out there. I found fan fic a few months ago. What I do is check the new posts read the stories that look interesting. If nothing catches my eye I pick a letter and scroll down till I find a story I want to read.

If I like a story I click on the author’s profile and read all their other works. I have found some great ones this way.

Some wonderful authors I have found so far are:
Harriet Vane
Mal4prez
Intopaper

There are others but these come to mind.

Enjoy – Desert Girl

I didn't read the thread, just wanted to throw in my $0.02. These are all from this site:

Leiasky's works are great, though she is a Silee shipper.

mal4prez's stories impressed me very much, she is an excellent writer.

Tamsibling is pretty good too, though another Silee shipper.

ItsaWash writes good Jaylee smut and some pre-series Jayne stuff that is excellent.

I have a couple that are ok, but personally I don't think they are too great.

If you're into Simon/Kaylee, I have a fluff series "Pretty ... pretty" that got some good response. It's a finished series and there's a one-shot post the series called "Am I pretty?". I might make a continuation series at one point or more one-shots, but not until I can fully commit to it again.

My "Fun and Games" (which is more general humor, though with slightly shippy feel to it) series is currently unfinished. It's possible reading the first chapter as one story and just not read the rest until I've posted all of the "Hangover" chapters.

The one-shots are safe, though. All Simon/Kaylee.

HELP!

I've finished ScrewTheAlliance's amazing 'Treasure of damn-I-can-never-get-the-name-right-sorrySTA' and am jonesing bigtime for some new Mal4Prez, I need something that is similar to those two, who I find really have something special (with all due respect to all the great writers out there who I just haven't read yet.)

Action, adventure, psychological intrigue, I'm not a shipper though that doesn't mean I abhor all forms of it.

I need something GREAT to read. I'm seeing stuff that seems pretty good, but I need something GREAT to read.

Well after that I would recommend Mal4Prez and 'The Fish Job' followed by 'Easy Tickets'.

Not as big, but just as good. I actually preferred this as I found The Treasure of fei Long Wu (or something) a bit too big. Not in size (which I loved. I hate looking for new things to read... so I like the stories to be long), but the story was too 'substantial' for me. The BDH's being far too important.

MAL4PREZ

Thank you thank you thank you CaroleJude and NBZ and RismyG!!

**hops around my office dancing in joy!!**

Are for other fics - I highly recommend The Blue Sun Job by Guildsister - but it starts with the little fic Truthsome here:

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=894

It's got a pretty serious tone and not so goofy as some fic, but she's a great great writer and the Mal/Zoe back story is excellent! In fact - I'm writing my own Mal/Zoe history now (Easy Tickets sequel, yay!) and I've had to convince myself that the things she came up with aren't canon, and I can change them! It just fits the series that well.

BTW, Guildsister's fic is what got me started writing. I kind of borrowed a scene of hers and went from there. (I really should apologize for that - I was ignorant and never asked her permission. *guiltyface* Are you out there, Gsis? Um... sorry! and thank you!)

Let me second everything which had been said about MAL4PREZ tales, Fish Job and Easy Ticket. What a fantastic read, the best FF fanfic I've seen so far! A truly ansamble saga, not a false note in character descriptions, nail-biting plot - vow! I'm so happy to come accross it, and I see that the sequel is planned. :)
I'd like to comment on those fics, does it make sense to comment on the older fics, would authors still see it?

Yes, we get notifications when someone comments on fic (unless the site is acting up) so definitely comment on her older stuff.

And I have to echo a bunch of people's comments on Mal4Prez' stuff as well. Her stories are very well written ensemble pieces and I've learned quite a bit in talking to her:)

Gotta agree with m4p on the Guildsister Truthsome/Blue Sun Job rec. (And of course, I have to agree with everyone else on the Fish Job/Easy Tix recs, too!)

It was the first fanfic to capture my imagination the way the series had, and like you, m4p, has inspired many a scribblings (though I've never actually went ahead and turned it into something worthy...). Some of the stuff I've written I think of as BSJ fanfic!

Are there any positive ("Happy") post BDM fics out there?

Too many seem to concentrate on angst. Or they kill someone. Or the happiness is 'longterm' after people have moved on. or all of the above.

I know the picture left after the BDM is rather bleak, but I want some post BDM 'firefly'. Not smallville/buffy/Angel with all the teen angst.

So is there any out there? (I am not sure whether I should have started a new thread for this...)

KAOSIUM

I'm resurrecting this thread to thank everyone for the suggestions, and so I don't have to go fishing for it every time I run out of things to read. Also I was hoping there might be some newer recommendations, perhaps even someone could point me in the direction of finding ones like the stories I liked best listed below.

*****minor fanfic spoilers below******

I really liked the 2.5 stories by ScrewTheAlliance, they were the best ones I've read so far. It was disappointing he didn't finish the last one. :(

The Fish Job and Easy Tickets by MAL4PREZ were really good too.

I read all the virtual episodes at stillflying.net and enjoyed them, though I quit reading for a while sometime in the second season when I read the one where Mal whores out Kaylee so he can win a race. I couldn't believe Mal would do that to his mei-mei. I'm awfully glad I came back to them though, many of the best ones were the last half of that season.

I also liked Lex Talionis, another great story, but perhaps due to pure coincidence it was about the third one in a row I read where Kaylee is either raped, threatened with gang rape, or raped in someone's dream. Poor Kaylee! What is it about that cute little girl that makes people violate her so often in these stories! :)

I also liked the Blue Sun Job, that was really good too. The Execution of Jayne Cobb worked well for me too, as did another Jayne story by Space Angel I can't recall the name of right now.

So what I'm looking for is more stuff like that, complete stories with as good characterization as possible, so I never get the impression 'he'd never do or say that!' I'm also not the slightest bit interested in 'shipping.' I don't mind romance in a story if it fits in nicely and compliments it, but I don't want to read something that's mainly a contrivance to get two imaginary characters together so they can have imaginary sex. Some good and smart people like that sort of thing, and that's fine; I'm just not one of them. There were a number of recommendations for an author named Tara, but I noticed somewhere else it was considered Mal/Inara shipping and when I went to her site it seemed from the descriptions they were mostly romance-based. Is there more to them as well? I can read a romance if there's a really good story attached to it, should I check these out?

So basically I'm looking for stuff that reads like it could be an episode on the show, and preferably set before the movie so Wash and Book can be in it. Does anyone have further suggestions?

Answered another thread like this a few weeks ago. You want a great story told over a long time with genuine love for the characters, read Slumming's epic tale from its beginning in "Voices". Just go to the profile page for this writer and start reading! Though the story is Mal/River, it all makes sense given the situation as it was at the end of the BDM. Even if you can't see yourself ever believing Mal/River would be possible, these stories are amazingly like the series. And the Mal voice is spot on, every time! Hope you will enjoy them as much as I do!!!!

Thanks you, I will check it out. The idea of Mal/River kinda squicks me, but if it's well enough done I might be able to tolerate it. If it's 'Epic' then it seems probable it's a part of the story, not the story itself.

Well, Kaosium, everyone recommends ScrewtheAlliance for good reason. Lots of action, lots of humour.

I think the characterization is best in Unfinished Business and The Treasure of Lei Fong Wu. For you, I'd recommend the later: it's pre movie, and Wash and Book are used to good effect.

It is a LONG sucker, just word of warning, but each chapter will keep you hanging on, and there's some great plot going on in it.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=ScrewtheAlliance

For slightly shorter fare, I think Ain't the Fall that Kills Ya by intopaper has an excellent episode feel. The crew gets a very interesting job, and the only romance that happens is a pretty bit of angst at a party in the last chapter or so.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/showprofile.asp?un=intopaper

jetflair has a nice long POW camp story that's worth a looksee, I read it for the Mal backstory, which I think is excellent. But, that's another very long one, and there's a few points about it some might disagree with. I mention jetflair mostly because she had a little fifteen chapter thing that I thought was excellent that she based off a dream she had. "Dream Sequence."

http://www.fireflyfans.net/fulluserbluesunlist.asp?un=jetflair

This one made me giggle. A lot.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/sunroomitem.asp?i=15337

This one makes me sniffle.

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2683646/1/

This one explores just how far the crew would go to save their ship if it crashed. What? Does that sound like something I've dabbled in a little recently? *innocent*

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1996576/1/

And if you like pure pulp fiction-y action, Peptuck. Some people might think it's too much, but I kind of like the comic-book violence.

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/348055/

You've already read Mal4Prez, so there's not much else I can give you. :)

Read anything by Amdobell. She has written several long, well-plotted stories that go on forever but are worth the read.

I also recommend Lieasky (I think that's how you spell her name). Anyway, she also wrote a few long stories that were excellent but she also writes a lot of sexy one shots, mostly with Kaylee and Simon as central characters. Too bad she hasn't posted anything for a while, cause I'd like to see some more.

I didn't use to like Mal/River either, but I love slummin's works. Truly amazing.

Also worth a read is Jane0904's series. She has Mal/OC and its really good. Slummin's will take long enough to work your way through (I can reread it all in 2/3 weeks, but that's reading 2-3 hours a night) but Jane0904 has almost twice as much to read through. Well worth it tho.

Thank you so much for the additional recommendations. "The Treasure of Lei Fong Wu" was the first one I read, and I agree with you its excellent. 89 chapters is indeed long, but I read it in two days, one of my gifts. :)

For anyone else who might be intimidated by the size, keep in mind it's not as much one story as it is a complete story arc with the subplots and everything and might be considered a season or part of one. Don't give up quickly on it as the BDHs aren't in the first chapter, he gets to them and does it brilliantly. Lots of great insights and inferences supported by canon, so the characters really feel like our BDHs and the original characters as people who'd fit into the 'Verse. It is written by a published sci-fi author, so it is not as much fan-fic as it is something you could imagine being published as set in the 'Verse.

PLATONIST

If you want good characterization, plot, all the characters accounted for, and with just a tad of canon romance, try CharlieBZ.

It is post Miranda, so it starts out dark and angsty, but lightens up as you read. And her River voice and portrayal is wonderfully sweet and endearing (no romance for her yet).
