Their is nine crew members. 2 on the outside of the ship. 7 in custody. I like that Capt Reynolds had made sure there were 7 place mats on the Bonanza table when the purple bellies were going through the ship checken for stow aways. River had no clothes so she wears Kaylees things. Then they were stocked with medical supplies already and that would not give away Dr Tam's bag in the infermory. Ok the only thing left to do would be dump Simon's clothes with Wash's stuff. We don't see it done but with the place mats set for 7 people I assume it was done. In WW2 the french people who took in down allied pilots would also do this. I just liked the slickness of it in this episode which is probably overlooked.

Were very private people is all.

Their should be spelled there in this case and checken should be spelled checking ....

Infirmery = infirmary ....

Spell checking over.

on to the fact I never noticed the use of 7 place mats instead of 9

huh ...

So that's why the marines are turning the placemats over - to see if they have been doubled-up in a hurried attempt to disguise the number. There's me thinking they were looking for tiny fugitives.

Ha! This is the best explination of that I've heard so far!
actually, I thought they might be looking for money or drugs or other small contraband; just to see what charges they could stick the crew with. but seeing if they were doubled up is far better. Although I never acredited the Alliance with an overabundance of brains, so maybe they were looking for tiny fugitives

Good observations, PirateCat! The placemat thing always cracks me up, but your theory makes sense.

Hehe, I always kinda thought that too, I was like, I really don't think that Simon and River would be able to fit under those... I sort of thought that they were they just trying to make the Alliance seem stupid or something, but I guess this makes more sense.
