Hey guys!

For the past year, I have been working, (on and off...I have a life) on a Firefly project. I post as a character (Terry Shannon) on a play by post site called Oberon. Oberon is a Firefly class ship like Serenity with a great crew. We've been writing for almost 2 years.

Anyway, I've been into 3d animation for a long time now. Maybe 5 or 6 years. All self taught with a lot more to learn. I built architectural models for an architecture firm for over 5 years. I'm one of those very ambitious people.

That being said, I want to do a fully CG Oberon movie. I feel like I understand enough to be able to pull it off, but I don't understand enough to be able to pull it off on my own. So, I'm looking for help. The story is almost completly worked out. I've been writing it for about 10 months. Not that it's real long, but I've been trying to get everything EXACTLY the way I want it, and that's tough. So, the script is coming together very nicely. But, I feel that certain things can be getting done while I finish the script. Since this is a big project, I want to take baby steps to get it done. So right now, all I'm looking for is artists. I need help designing the characters. I have a lot of info on each one of them, and an idea of how they should look. But I am totally open to suggestion too. I can tell you this. Each character has been based on a real actor. For example, Terry is based on Owen Wilson. Doesn't have to look just like him, but it gives the idea of his look and personality.

So, if any of you guys are artists or know of aomeone that might be interested in helping, please drop me a line.

I would like for just one person to do the character design so that each of the characters are in the same style. So, if I hear from several people, I'll be choosing just one to help me with the characters. But there's a lot of work that needs to be done, so I'll be asking for help in different areas from others as well.

I was gonna try to do everything myself, but it would get done so much faster with help. Plus, it's a cool Browncoat project that you can get your name on!

Again, if interested, contact me at slowhand@comcast.net

Here's a little test footage I did with a ship that was so kindly donated to me by Sean Kennedy. (Thanks again Sean!) It's rough, but it's just a lighting test.

So you're using lightwave?

Also what image style are you looking to do?

Actually, I'm using 3DS Max. But, I'm toying with the idea of getting some animation help at some point too. If there are enough people that want to help with the animation, and many are using Lightwave or Maya or any other software, I would be fine with letting them use whatever software they want and just sending me finished shots. I however, plan on doing all of the animatics in 3DS Max. If someone wants to do a shot in Lightwave, I could send them the animatic and they could render a final shot based on the animatic. The only problem I see with that is having different versions of the models for each of the software packages. But that's down the road a bit. Maybe I can come up with a solution between now and then.

Any suggestions are welcome.

As far as look goes, I want to render very realistically, but I don't really want photo real models...if that makes any sense. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not going to render with a cartoon shader or anything. I want the light and shadows to look realistic. But, the characters don't really have to be anotomically correct. (I have no idea if I spelled that right, LOL)

I have kind of an idea, but I'm honestly looking forward to see what others think. I just would like to see some art that I can look at and decide. Nothing has been carved in stone at this point.

I assumed lightwave because thats the format Sean Kennedy's model is in, has it been converted to max?

For the style do you mean something like Roughnecks - Starship Troopers Chronicles?

Sean had a Max version that he converted and sent to me. Sean has been great! He has sent me tons of stuff to help out. He's gone far and beyond the call, giving me more than enough reference to help out.

I haven't seen Roughnecks, but I think I know what you're talking about. I realize that none of us are proffesional animators. I know I'm not. I want it to look the best it can, but since it can't be Hollywood level, I would be happy if it looked like really good video game cinematics, you know?

He's a top bloke, offered a lot of help when I made my own Serenity model.

If you need any help this is an example of a character I created recently, though it's untextured:

Some ship models (also both untextured, I've unfortunatly not got much in the way of textured work to show):
DragonFly Transport

And a random little vehicle, the iHop

I'd like to help out in some capacity.

Very nice! I'd love for you to help out!

You know, I've got something that might be right up your alley. There are some land vehicles that I need. I didn't really get too specific in the script about how they look because I really don't know how they look yet. There are certain things that I know about them though.

I don't want to explain too much on the forum because I don't want to give too much away as far as the story goes. If interested in helping me design and possibly modeling these vehicles, drop me a line at slowhand@comcast.net

Also, the call is still out for concept artists for the characters. Anyone that's interested, just send an email my way and we'll talk.:-)
