Now I realize that this may not be the most sympathetic medium to ask this, but...

Okay, it seems that whenever I go to some shindig (or to be specific, a movie showing like Can't Stop the Serenity in Seattle earlier this year) there are beaucoups of Browncoats around, with a smattering Blue Sun agents, but no Alliance! Either in ship uniform or combat uniform. I want to add a little variety/controversy/mayhem to future Seattle Browncoat get-togethers, but I'm having trouble starting out on Alliance gear. Could somebody help?

The soldier type uniforms from The Train Job were left over from the Starship Troopers movie. That might help you find reference shots or even prop replicas.

LeiaSky on this site has apparently put together a pretty accurate combat uniform (the Starship Troopers one). Try contacting her.

Unless Joss lied about it, yeah, really. It's in the commentary either for Serenity: The Episode or The Train Job. Right off hand I don't recall which.

It was on the commentary for THE TRAIN JOB. When I first saw the series, I didn't make that connection at all. But then when I heard it on the DVD, then I kinda hit myself in the head for not obviously recognizing it. I only saw the movie a couple of times, and my brother was more into it than me.

One thing that I was wondering about with the movie was if the budget would allow for better uniforms for the Alliance soldiers. Was glad to see that they did.

Speaking of which, does anyone remember BRAZIL? Whenever I watch that movie, there seem to be a ton of parallels with FIREFLY/SERENITY with that movie. And one scene from BRAZIL that I liked a lot was the scene when Sam is in the transport with all the other people bagged for questioning and you see the two stormtroopers take off their helmets and complain about how uncomfortable the helmets are. And how the one guy because he has thick eyebrows doesn't have sweat stinging his eyes. I like that because it humanizes them and you realize that the soldiers you see constantly getting shot down aren't mindless automotons, but normal people doing everyday jobs.

I think the only hint you get in either FIREFLY or SERENITY is in the opening scene of the movie, when you see the secretary and the look of horror on her face as she sees Dr. Mathias die on The Operative's sword. You realize that she's not a part of what the Alliance did to River and is just some low level employee on a need to know basis who is just doing this job to support a family. Dr. Mathias was probably very nice to her. And now she's seeing some stranger kill him with his sword.

I've learned that when it comes to the military, it's not the soldiers that are corrupt, but the crooked generals that are part of the administration that are the ones that are cracking down on civil liberties. So I can't really see her or any regular soldier as EVIL!!! It's the blue handed men and the guys giving the orders to the Operative as the true bad guys.

I did the Purplebelly thing at the Philly (Bryn Mawr) CSTS screening.

The series Alliance Feds were indeed slightly modded Starship Troopers costumes.

I believe River mentions that in one of her ramblings as she said old men with blood on their hands, referring to the key members of Parliment which were pulling all the strings and made her crazy in the first place.

No, the one I put together, with help from a friend, is the Alliance purples from the film. I do make and sell the uniform pins from that uniform as well.

I bumped the "Screw the Browncoats, I wanna be Alliance thread for all its good info/discussion.

This Forum seems to move a little slower and so might be a better place to continue Alliance posting.

Sometimes you have to be a bad guy. Bad guys are generally quite interesting parts to play, and some of them have really great uniforms.

That's why Star Wars spawned the Stormtrooper costume groups like UK Garrison, and they do certainly look good. Firefly's Alliance troops don't have quite such interesting or cool uniforms, sadly. They're OK... but their props haven't really been designed with love. Using leftovers from another movie is always a bit tragic. (This is why Kubrik had the ship models in '2001' destroyed, to prevent them being re-used in some B-picture, as was common at the time.)

When my wife wanted to go to a 'Sound of Music' event a few years ago, I went as a Nazi officer. Stay off their politics, and you have to admit they had the sharpest uniforms of anybody in that conflict. So go for it - and be sinister.

Well, lucky for us there's no donkeys on this planet.
