I've been lurking on these boards since Firefly first aired and I'm finally stepping out of the shadows to pimp my first Firefly fanvid, 'Exile.'

You can get to it here:

http://www.wolfpupserenade.com/ffvids.html

(Link fixed 8/3/06)

It's a look at Inara's conflicted relationship with Mal. Hope you enjoy!

That is really good. One of the better quality fanvids I have seen yet.

I would do some myself but I have to find the money to convert DVD video to a format that I can use in Window Movie Maker. Maybe someday.

There are tons of songs out there that fit so well in one way or another to Firefly.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Not sure whether I'll be able to play a Real file. I'll try. Don't suppose you could make an alternate format available?

You can download and use Realplayer for free which plays Real media.

I must say that I agree that RealPlayer is evil mostly because I have to boot into Windows to view the movie (I like my OpenBSD ).

But, with regards to your vid. Very good. I'll be looking forward to you next one

Well, RealPlayer changes your preferences so that it becomes the default application for just about every media file you have.

I hate it when programs do that.

Real is very closed. There was a program a little while back that could store streaming real content as a file on your hdd for later viewing. But Real decided that they didn't like that so they got the lawyers out and shutdown the project. I don't like companies that display that kind of tactics.

I found an older version of RealPlayer on my hard disk, and watched the vid.

Its very good-----there aren't many Mal/Inara vids, and this one is certainly a worth entry into that catagory. There were even a few scenes and dialog snippets that I couldn't immediately place, which is rare.

However, the Real codec still sucks. Its a lot more jerky than Divx, MPEG, or QT; its not even as good as WMV. Might just be the age of the player, but I don't think so.

There's also the fact that, at least in *this* version of Realplayer, there's no support for screens which are wider than 4x3. So its "full screen" mode leaves black bars on all four sides of the image on my screen.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and comments, I very much appreciate it.

Lindley, I think it might be the age of the RealPlayer version you're using, as I've had no jerkiness problems myself and haven't had it reported back to me by others, either. Nonetheless, thanks for putting up with the media format to watch. :)

Since I was going to do it anyway, I hurried up the WMV format of the vid and am posting it to my site shortly (it will be right below the RM link when it's ready). Not sure if that's better for some folks, but it's at least another option.

Hmm...that's a good question.

Definitely pick a song that's very interesting to you and that you love, because generally you hear it enough times by the end of the vid that you want to throw your speakers out the window. And when it's a song you don't like that much to start with? That's murder. Trust me. ;) Also, the motivation of a song/idea you love will help you get through the phase where you go "wow, I hate vidding." I still go through that. Heh.

For my first vid I stuck with a single episode and a very basic structure and that really helped me, simply because it was easy to acquire source for one vid vs. twenty. Although only being able to choose scenes from one episode is very difficult in its own way, so maybe what I should say is: "stick with a fairly simple vid idea." Half the battle is learning how to put a vid together, both structurally and technically.

Finally, don't be afraid to take a little while to work on it, or to mess up, or even to chuck it if you finish it and don't like it. And there are various websites and email groups out there for vidders that are always great places to soak up information. Generally you'll find that vidders love to talk about vidding.

Hope some of that helps!

I use a combination of programs to rip the DVD source to my computer, then covert it .avi format, and then import it into a Collection in Windows Movie Maker. So far it's worked really well.

The ripping programs is DVD Decrypter -
http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

Then use AutoGK (AutoGordianKnot) to convert the VOB files to .avi files. It has a very good tutorial that walks you through what to do.
http://www.autogk.net/web/

Hope that helps.

I never realized just how much subtext there was in the series between Mal and Inara-- the number of times they share a touch or exchange a meaningful look. And you put it together beautifully. Excellent! I especially like the way you used scenes that may have been humorous originally and turned them to something dramatic.

If I hadn't seen all the eps dozens of times, I might not have realized it only uses scenes from the series... I might think you used original footage.

Great job.

I saw the title to this thread and got all excited! Okay, not a huge Enya fan, but this song is one of the few that I adore. But that's not why I got excited. It was because of the lyrics that I knew matched Firefly so very very well, Inara specifically.

So, awesome!

And now that I've actually watched it, I can now say that was one of the most masterful FF fanvids I have seen yet!

If I'd had the computer capable of not crashing, I've been wanting to make a fairly similar themed vid using Portishead's "Roads". But alas, it is not to be.

So I'm very happy to see your own vid, cuz it rocks!

no prob! I know that feedback is like crack, and that specific and/or detailed feedback is nirvana, so when something good comes along, the creator deserves a little bit of instant bliss.

I had been intrigued before seeing it to see how you handled such a slow song, and see that you have the images (most of them) slowed perfectly. There were a couple that weren't, near the end, that jarred me a bit. But it was minor, really.

Loved how you broke up Inara's dialogue from the end of HofG throughout the vid.

I was, however, hoping that you'd end the vid with Inara saying

"Why would I ever want to leave Serenity" from the end of Shindig.

That woulda been a nice cap to it, and would help to stem the tears that were welling in my eyes.

...

So, planning on any more vids?

Ah, bless you and your specific feedback!

The toughest thing for me about vidding slow songs is the feeling that I'm losing the audience by making the movements/clips too slow. I tend to be obsessed with hitting beats and using the energy of the song so a slow song kind of messes me up and makes me re-evaluate what actually fits. I'd be interested to hear specifically which clips you thought were a bit fast (you can email me directly if you want - sdwolfpup(at)hotmail.com). One of the best elements of the song is how much it flows very organically, like a river. I love that.

The ending of the vid was tinkered with quite a lot - at the beginning it had her actually leaving the ship and my beta waved a big red flag saying that was entirely too depressing. Heh. So I went with the slightly more ambiguous them staring at each other. But I'm sorry it made you sniffle! (Even though that was the point...I'm very conflicted!)

And yes, I do have plans for more Firefly vids. I love this show so much though that I don't want to mess it up so I'm trying to settle on just the right songs. :)

Thank you again for your wonderful feedback!

The handle actually doesn't have any particular meaning, I've been using it for years as an email address and last year when I decided to vid I couldn't come up with anything else! Now of course I have lots of ideas. Typical. :) The SD stands for San Diego, the wolfpup is just because I like wolves. (Original huh? ;) )

How about yours? Also, you mentioned you know about the benefits of feedback, are you a vidder and/or writer?

Are you a Simon Tam fan? If so, then your handle is highly appropriate, since at the Fvx OB and at Still_Flying there's a theory regarding Simon that can be summed up as "Mal as Simon: Alpha Mal vs Alpha Pup" and wolf pack dynamics is somewhere in there :D

I loooooove betas! And yes, I'm a fanfic writer of 1.333 fics, epic novellas, the .333 bit I fear shall never be finished. The first one is over at Fanfiction.net "Choices" http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1217106/1/. One day, when I'm old and gray, I'll rewrite it, *cringes*

And I wish I could be a vidder, gorram computer. Sadly, no.

My name is from a German-Eretrian exchange student from highschool. It was unusual enough a name that no one else had it on the Fvx message boards.
