Thank you! I saw this link a few days ago but for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was. Should be easy enough too, :P

There was a fan series for Trek that wasnt too bad IIRC, so this might be pretty interesting. These guys seem to be serious about it.

Yeah, so appaerently they have a trailer out now on YouTube? has anybody seen it yet? If so how was it?

And they DO have a small Christmas video up with some of the characters, which is pretty good. Made me laugh (where I was supposed to).

Check that out.

I applaud their efforts but I'm not sure I'd want to watch something without the crew Joss put together. There's just a crew dynamic there that worked so well which has set the bar real high for this production to meet.

Yeah I checked out the trailer A while back-have they filmed more?
It did kinda annoy me because they'd done so much hard work but had fallen down on some stuff thats realively easy to do. They had great looking sets costumes, decent production values-visually, a wealth of people in it ...Then the sound was terrible (could hardly hear a word they were saying and the dubbed gunshots sounded exactly that.) The acting was pretty poor to.
I'm not trying to be nasty here just saying what I thought. Despite that I've recomended it here and elsewhere before-ecause I think it has many psoitives and a hell of lot of potential.

Wanted to add something about that trailer... it was put together extremely hurridly to make it to a convention. It is NOT what the final product will look or sound like. It was not colour corrected or properly edited for sound.

We are working on a "proper" trailer, that will look like what the finished product is supposed to look like.

And as for the acting, well, you'll have to wait until you see the final product to make a judgment call on that one! Just keep in mind we ain't professionals!

Whenever I hear people say "The acting ain't all that great, and the picture is poor." I want to say to them well, get a bunch of money and people together, build props and a main stage, make costumes and a script, film it and show us how it SHOULD be done. *sheesh* Everybody knows everything.

Btw, I've been following this since the beggining and I've been freakin' out waiting for the final product. Great job my fellow Canucks.

Thanks for the straw-man argument.

But, to answer it, if you do want what to see what a fan film should look like, IMO "To Know a Jedi" is the current standard. And btw, it was made for less than $800, the acting was decent and the special effects were superb (especially considering it was fan made).

The fact of the matter is that all production values for "Into the Black" aren't even close to where it should be. Not to mention the "acting." I mean come on! It's just terrible. The only one that is even close to acceptable is the captain. The rest of them just plain suck.

Don't get me wrong. I applaud the effort. But, people have to know there limitations and accept them. Because, if one keeps working in areas that are there weaknesses, they're just going to embarrass themselves.

Oh, and one doesn't have to be a good actor to realize when one is acting badly now do they. Similarly for special effects, dialogue, etc. So, don't go around saying that people have to prove that they can do something well to point out when someone is doing something horribly. That's just so wrong on so many levels it isn't funny.

Well, having never heard of the "current standard" I had to do a search on To Know A Jedi. After finding that their website was gone, I discovered it on YouTube...and was very quickly bored by it. I jumped ahead a few times hoping to find something that piqued my interest, but was disappointed each time. It's obvious how they were able to shoot this for less than $800, as it is set in our own modern world. They weren't required to build sets, make costumes, etc. And near as I could tell, the CG was limited to the lightsaber blades, which is one of the simplist CG effects out there (that being said, their blades were on the lower end of the scale with regards to some I've seen in far superior Star Wars related fan films). I found there to be nothing terribly innovative or really all that interesting about it.

The writing was sophomoric, where it seemed as though the writer was trying to appear clever and gritty by peppering the language with frequent use of swearing, which is actually the mark of a lazy and/or inexperienced writer. One character, surprised that his buddy made a working lightsaber, rattled off a stream of non-sensical expletives. Writers like Quentin Tarantino use swearing effectively and appropriately, and allow it to enhance the dialgoue. This is not the case with TKAJ

The direction and camera work were all fairly basic and unispired, as was the editing.

The acting was hit and miss, but I expect that in fan films.

I would say if you want to see an example of Fan Film making that sets the standard, I'd look no further than Star Trek: New Voyages.

Considering how little content for Into The Black is currently available, I don't think your criticisms are valid. In various forums (including this one), the people involved with Into the Black have repeatedly stated that this trailer was quickly slapped together at the last minute from rough footage, in order to have something to show at a convention. They have also said that the trailer does not reflect what the final product will look or sound like. No colour correcting, no sound editing, no sound effects editing, no visual effects.

The ITB trailer only has two CG shots in it, the ship fly by at the beginning, and the titles at the end, both of which I think look pretty cool. There are many more shots that have been done for the final episode, each more impressive than the last.

What exactly is falling short in the "production value" end of things, in your estimation?

It would be nice if those few people would stop criticizing and making negative comments about ITB before it's even finished. Is it too much to ask that people reserve judgement until the episode is finished and they can see it?

For the record, I've worked in the film industry for 11 years on everything from no-budget indie flicks to big budget Hollywood films, so I have some idea what I'm talking about.

I just want to add that Joss himself knows about this fan film, is psyched about it and has given them total approval and support. Go to Whedonesque to find the archive that he penned himself.

So if Joss see's this as an exciting prospect maybe others should be more open. I mean seriously we're Browncoats, isn't the very meaning supporting others efforts? Or has standards changed?

Yes, wha-hoo Joss!

Nathan Fillion is also not only aware of ITB, but he made a financial contribution to their cause after meeting their captain last St. Patty's Day.

I'll give this a shot. Not sure I'll be able to get into non-Serenity crew folk but I'll give it a try.

I agree folks should stop trying to tear this apart. Unfinished producst are a pretty poor thing to judge quality on. Let's all see a real episode before we decide to trash it please. Who knows, maybe it'll be good!

a) It's not Serenity or her crew. Nobody's trying to be the BDHs.
b)I am willing to sit through a lot of botched production values if the story is worth it.
c) A M A T E U R (usually indicative of): done with much love, experience and polish optional.

Let's see what happens when they're done. New people keep signing on to lend a hand all the time.

I for one am excited.

There is a new, slightly more polished trailer posted. The audio still needs work, so be aware of that.

And as Joss would say, if you don't like it, now is the time for silence.

We aren't trying to take over the 'verse. We had a fun idea, and ran with it. It was all about Browncoats getting together, having a good time, and having something to show for it at the end. So I think that, at least, deserves respect. If you think it sucks, too bad! Just shake your head, say "at least they tried", and leave it at that.

Just curious who you post as on ITB site Aurra. Am I speaking to the cappy himself? Which case, hi.

Not bad for a fan- film eh folks?

Did you post it at Whedonesque? I'd love to know what Joss thinks.

It's a toss up between Zeppo and Ventrue1830, and here I post as the latter :)

I was trying to be all anonymous and junk, guess that's over :D

Misstressahara, thanks for the hi and the support of ITB. We're on the road to getting this thing finished. We're about 90% done with principal photography, and serious constuction is slated to begin on our last remaining set this week.

We're hoping to get the last scenes shot in early June, and it will be released this summer.

About a month ago, myself and two other members of ITB (Miranda Coombe, who plays Sera York, and Eric Tong, writer/producer) did an inteview for The Signal podcast, which has now gone online.

The Signal website can be found here: http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/ and we're in #13.

Come and give it a listen (part 1 starts about the 11:30 mark, and part 2 around the 40 min mark)
