AGENTROUKA

Mal4Prez,

how about we quit here, after all? I keep seeing more and more that we disagree on too many issues to even have a truely sensible discussion about the subject.

We disagree quite profoundly on the emotional effects of sex vs. motherhood, on the importance of flexibility, on the nature of the Guild and, I see, on whether "something makes an interesting story" is justification enough for proposing an inherently volatile system within a supposedly very well organised insitution.

I don't think the Guild is a fairy tale but I can see it working much better than not working, whereas I cannot see that with your proposed nanny business at all. I see neither motivation for the Guild to enter that market, nor too much of a market for it, nor many candidates.

If I keep trying to chew through every single disagreement, I'll end up repeating everything I already said and making more gargantuan posts and we'll still not convince each other. For the sake of the thread and both our nerves, I'm bowing out of this particular discussion. Thank you very much for it, though.

I have always had a hard time with this character and I wonder if Joss has since she has had the most cut scenes in the series and movies.

Following Serenity, is she still going to go about her business, will Serenity really go into hiding and if so, what is she going to do. There have been time she has found it hard to find work

I get the hooker with the heart of gold thing and I wonder if she would be better served as a recurring character. I know they say she is suppose to be Mal moral compass but I think that could be better suited and filled with another female character if they wanted one on the ship
also I know she was suppose to give them status by having her on board, they still seemed to have a hard time.

She left once before, I could see her leaving again. The whole love-hate thing with Mal always seemed a bit forced. and I wonder if Joss knew time was fleeting with the series, lets push these two together.

If anything, I wished Joss had kept Wash, and have Inara not die, but leave.

Uh oh!

Heh, just kidding. But I actually think Mal without Inara would be just the boring brooding anti-hero character. All of the members of the crew bring a little something out of him, and losing Inara to recurring character-dom would lose a lot of the important themes and conflicts on the ship.

Inara's his moral compass, almost as wise and as spiritual as Book (and particularly needed after the movie). And yet, when it comes to love and relationships, there's an ambiguous side to her, that she brings into the relationship she has with Mal! I don't think that's forced, I think that's inspired, really. What relationship is simple? And who honestly could do a better job as a moral compass and a contrast to Mal, who kills and steals, then a BUDDHIST? She's serene, he's unstable and bitter, great for conflict, great for challenging him and what the viewers think of his actions.

Not to mention it would make Mal a grumpy unbearable cuss, enough that his entire crew would consider leaving. Hey, it's what happened in the movie. :)

Every character has a place, and if you look deep enough, they all have layers. I daresay Joss cut so many of her scenes not because she was so difficult that he didn't really like her, but because she's so difficult it's hard to do her justice!

VERAVERA

i don't know that i'd say she's a badass...but she does know how to defend herself...in her "line of work" it would be wise to be taught self-defense should the need arise...all in my opinion...

Heh, yeah, I think a lot of people thought my use of the term "bad-ass" was a little much. Still, I think she knows how to hold her own, even in rough places, that's really all I'm trying to say.
